The Class of '49 Looks Back Yes. the Class of '49 loolcs baclc on four exciting and memorable years at Saint Mary's. These years proved to be exciting not only to us as individuals but also to the school as a whole. Come with us now as we go baclr over our adventures. , A The tirst page in this bool: of memories is our initiation as freshmen. ln September of '45 it seemed to us to be the worst possible initiation: but all bumps, bruises and deflated egos were forgotten at the Reception that followed. After a dwonth or so we got used to the routine of high school and began to take an active part in school life. At the Christmas Bazaar, the Freshman Novelty Booth netted the largest amount in the school. As a reward for our efforts, we were well represented on the Honor and Citizenship Rolls all year. ln June we were awarded the Honor Cup. The next page is about our Sophomore year. Socially, we g ined some distinction by giving what has become an annual tradition. a dance for the benetiv of Father A. L. Hofstee. O.P. With the dance, which we appropriately named Heatwave, we presented the Sophomore Follies. Musically speaking, the talent. we discovered then has marked our class as one of the best. On the other side of the picture, our interest in the Catholic Federa- tion resulted in the first meeting of the North Bay Unit ever to be held in Stockton. Working on the various committees, editing the Sophomore Kettle and lceeping our scholastic record high enough to win the Honor Cup again in June lcept us busy all through the year. The third page is tilled with our activities as Juniors. This year was a year of superla- tives. The traditional dance and program for Father Hofstee. the Mardigras, was the most successful dance of the year. All the iuniors and seniors will remember the picnic, held at Marsh Creek. The Prom, which we gave honoring the seniors. and the Junior Kettle. which we published, were both the biggest and best so far. The Catholic Federation had by now become a vital part of our every day school lite. The last page in the bool: ot memories is tilted to over-flowing with the responsibilities and adventures of our senior year. The trophies we have won have marlced this year as one of the most successful in sports. The football team won the Co-Championship ofthe Catho- lic Athletic League. Roy Moreno was elected to the All Star team and won the title of most outstanding player. Earl Funk won the Stoclcton Junior Chamber of Commerce trophy for the best passer ofthe season. ln basketball, the team. made up largely of seniors, won second place in the Catholic Athletic League, and third place in the Knights of Columbus Tournament. Ray DelCorso was awarded two trophies, one for high point man and the other for the most valuable player in the tournament. ln baseball we have hopes of being iust as successful. Aside from sports, we initiated the freshmen quite properly, and then soothed their wounds with the Reception, which was full of fun for all. We never will be able to forget the thrills and spills of Ditch Day. Grand Finale and Here We Go. given for Father Hofstee, the Junior-Senior Picnic and the Prom all added their sparlcls to this final page. As we close the bool: we thanl: our parents. the Dominican Sisters, and Monsignor McGough for the patience and guidance that they have given so freely during the past four years. We promise to be a credit to Saint Mary's and to give something worth while to society because of the training and teaching we have received in our high school days. MAUREEN MAHONEY '49
