Hoff and A. Tippie. Father Jacoby-St. Mary Father Jacoby, a welcome addition at St. Mary's, has become a very active member of our faculty. Besides teaching senior religion, he is head of our Religion department and moderator of the Legion of Mary. He has also arranged for extra-curricular activities, such as skating parties, which have saved us from many a boring free day. Father Vieweg-St. Mary Father Vieweg, a newly ordained assistant at St. Mary's, stepped right into the swing of things by accepting many responsibilities. ln addition to teaching two sophomore religion classes, Father is in charge of the high school Confraternity Classes, the adult Legion of Mary, the parish C.Y.O., the altar boys, and both Boy and Girl Scouts. We've known and loved this school both an eternity and a second. We think back to our freshman year with the old uniforms and their kick-pleats, new friends, the football team that won the State Championship, and the end of every line. Then we were sophomores. We remember the Senior-Faculty game with the silent cheers, the Mogadore game, the clubs we were finally allowed to ioin, and the long bus ride to Coshocton to see our very last football game. Soon we were juniors! What a year that was. Just remember Monsignor's 50th Anniversary, our first boyless year, the months of practice and the excitement of the Wizard of Oz, ordering our rings, the hectic preparation for our Prom, Moon- light and Roses . And then we were seniors! Remember: Little Sister Week, being first, the Senior Ball, delivering Thanksgiving baskets, winning the intramurals, English Class, Senior Blues over school in general, the picnic, the Prom, and most of all, graduation. We, the Class of 1965, look back, but we remember to look forward, too. We leave with confidence, but we take with us these memories. N Academ Students Set Goals H Religion is the most important subiect at St. Mary. R. Weigand, M. Dilullo, and J. Gannon improve their knowledge of the subiect by discussing the creative love and power of God the Father. Religion is one subiect that is not taken lightly. A living proof of this are D. Nauer, E. Wagner, V. Vrabel, S. Trofy, and L. Sondles as they work diligently at a religion assignment. 68 igh with Study of God Seniors C. Dukeman, K. Dyer, M. Fanelly, J. Laviska, M. Lesnie Linn, P. Moncrief, J. Scarpinito, J. Schubert, K. Shuff, and M. WS ki seem to be quite interested in what father has to say on the subiect Sophomore C. Neary tries her best to give the theological answer to a tough religion question. Her classmates J. Walters man, M. Mueller, M. Fezell, and E. Fitz appear amused at her L. es Choral, Music Theory Spark Interest in Arts That pulsating rythmical sound that starts one swaying and keeping time can be a complicated study when one delves into it academically. This is a reality one soon learns in Music Theo-ry. The ability to dance and sing well is no proof of knowledge of music. The sophomore music theory group prepares for the Christmas Program with another day of practice. Marianettes M. Guenther, J. Jackson, J. Watson, J. Gia- cabone, H. Petit, C. Stallard, A. Edmondson iat the piano-I run through another old favorite. D. Mollica, P. Weaver, R. Jordan, M. Dannemiller, M. Rasicci, and C. Meagher remind us of the true meaning of Christmas with a few religious carols. They sing O Little Town of Bethlehem and recall the tiny town where Christ was born. 69 Word power, word work, and word art are all part of the senior English classes. C. Nelson develops her power of speech and M. Cistone acts as chairman. Thoughts Conveyed By Use of Words Vocabulary, diagrams, compound-complex sentences, themes, reports-these make up our English course. A maior part is taken up by literature, the written ex- pression of man's knowledge, experience, and dreams. As 'freshmen we see the world folded into neat little books, the past merging with the present. We gasp as Odysseus escapes the Cyclops and watch as Anne Frank is led to iail. Sophomore year is filled with discovery about our own country. We float down the Mississippi with Tom Sawyer, share the heartache of Hester Prynne and chuckle through Booth Tarkington's Seventeen. Jun- iors meet such art forms as scopic verse and the Petrar- chean sonnet while sampling the social novels of Dickens or a little comedy of manners as in Pride and Prejudice. Broadening their scope, seniors take on such literary giants as Homer, Virgil and Dante and learn the im- portance of Word Power, Word Work, and Word Art. The underlying theme of Pride and Preiudice is a hard one to decipher because of the many ideas presented by V. Vrabel, E. Wagner, K. Selepec and B. Schubert. Besides studying novels, the juniors imitate the works of such famous men as Keats, Shelley, and Dickens. 70 25,1 ichool J Flintis schools close later . n Panel discussions give each individual girl a chance to express her own ideas. N. Hopp holds a poster with diagrams of complex sentences, while M. Whitten displays her talents by explaining the sentences to the class. Second year English students, M. Hay, D. Hatherill, and .l. Biasella compare views of the plot, theme, and characters of Edith Wharton's novel, Ethan Frome. 7'I Mathematics Helps Devel op Reasoning Powe If you happen to find yourself in a class where only a strange code is spoken, someday, don't be alarmed. You have probably invaded the world of modern mathematics, which has a vernacular all its own. As you watch, some students iot symbols down in their notebooks, while others ask questions, and others just sit and stare. But it's not all that bad, as the freshmen soon learn. The basic knowl- edge of sets, equations, and problems gained in Algebra I prepares students for the more complex geometric figures studied in sophomore year. Con- gruency and proofs challenge the sophomores. AI- gebra II acquaints iunior math students with the intricacies of the Cartesian coordinate system, spe- cial problems of factoring, and the trigonometric functions. Those with enough courage to tackle Math IV learn the secrets of the matrix, conic sections and logic. New Math is so interesting it keeps you awake nights. R. Delnoce and D. Beltram show its daytime effects. The application of the cosine function? To many of us this issiust another statement without a definition. But J. Detzel knows what she's talking about as she explains it to I. Wierich Iholding the boardl and other 72 students of second year algebra. By studying the natural sci- ences, we learn more about the gen- eral principles of science, such as New- ton's Law of Gravity, and the applica- tions and effects of these principles on our lives. Sophomore year is filled with the study of the beauties of plant and animal life and phenomena of nature. This wide study covers the make up of the human body to that of the tiniest leaf. Juniors enter a more complete study of chemical composi- tion of the earth by learning about changes' that occur from the combina- tion of many different substances. ln physics seniors are confronted with an infinite number of laws, formulas, and principles which require much study. Those wavy white lines across the green screen are fascinating for their scientific significance. They give K. Dyer and J. Ruof a graphic measure of sounds. Dismay is the reaction K. Breiding experiences at the suggestion that she demonstrate her topic of discussion. Equally dismayed are J. Barone and M. Kovac. C. Benson and M. Murgatroyd appear pleased. Social Studies Helps To Mature Students Man, master of the universe, assumes a new di- mension, as the record of his existence comes into focus. As intricate and varied as each human being are the catalysts which have shaped his history on this earth. Men grow old pondering the secrets of the universe, and yet we attempt to study the history ofthe entire world in one year. Impossible? No! Ask any sophomore, iust surfacing after nine months of immersion, wedged between such nobility as Alexander the Great and Marie Antoinette. The iuniors probe the depths of our democracy-the great American dream-searching for the causes behind the events in our own history. Coming of age, and astride of contemporary problems, seniors iuggle millions on the stock market and study cur- rent world problems. Social Studies dull? Why, no. lt's the study of man, his ideas and ideals, the guide toward the Utopia of the future. 76 lt isn't really Mr. KIotz's cottage: it's the Tai Mahal? But he M. Eck, T. Jenkins, K. Mclntyre are disappointed. 53 Qi Commercial Students Get Keyhole Preview Just as important as St. Mary's academic courses are its commercial classes-typing, shorthand, bookkeep- ing, and clerical office practice. These classes are essential for those planning to enter the business world. Typing requires accuracy, speed, rythm, and mental alertness. When taught the basics of shorthand, stu- dents are given opportunities to work with tape re- corders and record players-devices which aid them in their study. In bookkeeping, students learn to keep records of business transactions and to make balance sheets and financial reports. Clerical office practice involves filing, billing, and keeping records for certain firms. With these classes it is evident that St. Mary's students are prepared to enter the business world as fine secretaries. Seeming intent on becoming accomplished secretaries, L. Sondles, J. Cutlip, L. Oakes, and A. Dickinson practice to develop typing skills. In Sister GabrieI's bookkeeping class, students are taught the phases of the bookkeeping cycle. N. Niam, C. DeJacimo, R. Vargo, and B. Wilson attentively watch B. Gerbetz as she prepares to answer a question proposed by M. Reymann concerning the cycle. 78 f,,,, , G, f z R f Sl' ,vi 5?Mgg x x N , fm, W1 :V I , . . , W wi' gas? gg? if asv Q! Religious A rtivities Sodalists Work to Bring Christ to Others iqionii Sodolity officers are: M. Kernon, prefect, C. Kimmel, co-prefect, P. Becker, corresponding secretary, K. Kelly, recording secretary. As well as providing fun for all, the party held for the children's home was a huge success. M. Abdoo and her friend have fun putting a puzzle together. 84 To Jesus through Mary - this is the motto of the Sodality. Members become closer to our Lord by prayers and actions di- rected to Mary. Sodalists try to find a situation in everyday life which can be corrected. They discuss the problem and try to find a solution. This Apostolic Work was accomplished when the Sodality held a party for chil- dren from the Children's Home. Each spring the Sodalists make their Act of Consecration. They promise that they will faithfully follow all the rules of the Sodality for a period of one year. iii IE B. Schultz prepares for the Mardi Gras. The object of her attention is a stuffed Fr. T. The Legion of Mary, open only to girls of St. Mary Parish, is respon- sible for volunteer works per- formed throughout the parish. Some of its activities are visiting the elderly at the St. Stephen's Home, doing clerical work for the rectory, serving at banquets, and babysitting every Sunday during the Masses. The officers are Mrs. Capan, President, C. Meagher, Secretary, A. Tippie, Treasurer, and Father Jacoby, Moderator. At a meeting of the Legion of Mary, T. Heller, C. Kozesky, and E. The spirit and fervor of the retreat is exemplified by these sophomores. We must devote some special time during the year for this spiritual renewal and emphasize the real purpose of life. This is especially necessary in the modern society. 88 Seniors Look Forward To Future ' i Commencement exercises may mark the end of four hard years of study, but, more important, they mark the beginning of a new life. 1 D. Among the new proiects that were undertaken were the two Leadership Workshops and the TACS Program lTeen Awards for Community Servicel were most important, followed by the Motion Sheets and sale of school folders. Student Council .also assisted with two card parties and served as ush- ers at St. Mary's Open House. The Council's moderator was Sr. lgnatiana. The brains behind the outfit in the CUB drive are the members of the Student Council: E. Lyons, A. Wise, B. Miller, R. Porter, and D. Francis. Student Council members R. Wilke, M. Mueller, E. To further develop these qualities the members of the soci- ety organized a tutoring program, and monitored the noon study halls. They also served as ushers on Vocation Day and at the Open House. ln accordance with service and scholarship the National Honor Society printed the honor roll and mailed it to each parish. Members op- erated the book rack during the lunch hour. For the first time the society spon- sored an Academic Excellence Week. 106 M. The Future Teachers Association, un- der the direction of Sister Marie Lenore and Miss Dorothy Delagrange, initiated many new ideas this year. Because it sponsored many money-making projects, the club eliminated dues. Faculty Day provided enjoyment for each teacher as she received a candy-filled sailboat made by future teachers. Catholic Edu- cation Week was highlighted by the club's presentation of an educational as- sembly. Proceeds trom the annual Talent Show were sent to South American mis- sions, newly formed by the l.H.M. sisters. Know Your Community was a project designed to help each student know more of her community and support projects for its betterment. The club's success was largely due to the co-operation of its members. -,1w..- 5-.ft Future Teachers officers B. Simmons, K. Elick, J. Sutter, and M. Members did typing and duplicating iobs for the faculty. Club officers are M. Cistone, president, J. Arison, vice-president, N. Livigni, secretary, and A. Moffet, treasurer. Sister Dominica is club moderator. The main interest of the Future Nurses Club is to help girls choose a nursing career and the school which provides for their training. To achieve this purpose persons in cer- tain fields of nursing give talks about their work. Club officers are P. Wal- lace, president, D. Williams, vice- president, M. Whitford, secretary, C. Moore, treasurer. Club moderator is Miss Novitsky. Senior M. Cistone explains the proper operation of the duplicating machine to members of the Secretarial Club A. Moffet, N. Livingi, and K. Leroy. Practicing her filing, J. Arison looks for an important contract. The nursing career is as exciting as it is rewarding. French students achieve this appreciation by the produc- tion of French plays and the sing- ing of French songs. The Freshman Induction, in which the new members were sold as slaves, highlighted the Latin Club activities this year. Official induction was held at the annual banquet where togas made by slaveowners were worn by the slaves. Mr. Woll is club moderator. QI' 95 French Club officers J. McVay, treasurer, and E. Aldon, president, think it quite amusing the way officers P. Lee, vice-president and M. Potter, secretary pronounce French words. Latin Club president, K. Tucker, listens as R. Wilke, secretary, displays her great talent in reading Latin translations. Other officers J. Hutchinson, vice-president, and M. Franks, treasurer, seem amused at finding the meanings of several Latin words. E. Fitz and R. Weigand act out a scene from mythology in their Latin class. By doing this, they gain a better understanding of the Latin language. f 110 Mathematicians Explore World of Numbers More knowledge of the field of mathematics is the goal of all who study this science. This year the Math Club functioned as one of the largest organizations at St. Mary's, having as its goal three maior pro- grams: to instill a greater interest in mathematics by promoting recrea- tional, academic and project pro- grams. Some interesting proiects sponsored by the club were a Math Fair, a visit to each math class by Professor Robert Hathaway, a trip to Dayton, a car wash, and a club pic- nic. Hill takes the wheel while M. Laws and M. Polovick sit shivering ifrom fright?j as they wait their turn. The Interracial Club deals with relationships existing between races. Be- fore the meeting begins, members A. Gannon and R. Jenkins take a last minute look at C. LleweIlyn's report on the subject. The four fundamentals of the lnter- racial Club are: to better understand our fellow men, to expand our knowledge of interracial problems, to promote un- derstanding between races, and to be better .informed about today's racial problems. There is no more effective method for putting these fundamentals into practice than personal example. Through projects and study the Interra- cial Club tries to promote better rela- tionships between the races so that man can some day hope to live in a world in which all men are equal both in their eyes and in the eyes of God. This year's officers are: J. Guenther, president, T. Jenkins, vice-president, M. Berardi, secretary, S. Greathouse, treas- urer. The club's moderator is Mr. Bamont. Stressing the need for Equality in education, equality in em- ployment, and equality in housing, Dr. E. T. Sharppe, regional chairman of the NAACP, addresses the Interracial Club. 'I13 Spirit Backs Teams ln GAA Intramurals P. Testa calls the roll as President M. Conrad waits to begin the GAA meeting. What is K. Welsh discussing that is more important than roll call? There is sure to be excitement and action whenever two good teams are pitted against each other. So it was at the senior- junior intramurals. Here, S. Bedell takes it upon herself to guard two seniors. 'I'l4 The G.A.A. sponsors many differ- ent programs which contribute to the school's recreational and sports ac- tivities. Members work as gym as- sistants for Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Kidder, the high school and grade school gym teachers. Each year the G.A.A. sponsors a basketball and volleyball intramural series. This year the faculty played the seniors in a never-to-be-forgotten game of basketball. Non-recreational activi- ties included a car wash, bake sale and the annual style show. This year's officers were: M. Conrad, D. Mollica, P. Testa and L. Dieringer. The moderator was Mrs. Harris. As the end of the game draws near, tension mounts higher and higher. At intermission, the senior band broke the tension with musical accompaniment for a few cheers. Bowlers Aim Straight, Have Strikes to Spare The Bowling Club, moderated by Mr. Waickman, meets every Tuesday at Borie's Bowland to match their skills against each other. This year Stephanie Bodner won a cute stuffed dog, the first prize in the Christmas Tournament. The season ended with the Bowling Banquet. M. Campanale gets ready to roll her next ball lwhich will probably be a strike?J while l. Wierick checks her score to see if she can find any mistakes. Concentration is a factor in good bowling. As S. Linn keeps score, A. Berish thinks about her next turn and hopes she gets a strike instead of a gutter ball. I don't believe that l actually bowled over one hundred! seems to be what J. Pouliot is proudly telling her fellow bowlers. Other club officers, D. Beltram and M. Campanale, also find it hard to believe, but they agree that it is quite a wonderful accomplishment, so they smile in approval. Club president, C. Benson, however, looks as if she feels that one hundred isn't so great and that she co-uld do much better. 115 Busy Students Paint Posters, Corner Kings Some Publicity Club members who stopped to pose for their picture are: C. Nelson, A. Czaplicke, K. Welsh, R. Delnoce, K. Oreskovich, and K. Yeager. The Publicity Club is responsible for the many posters and buttons that are seen around the school before special events. The club is headed by C. Nelson, president, K. Yeager, vice- president, J. Cerrone, secretary, and K. Oreskovich, treasurer. Club mod- erator is Sister M. Aline. The newly formed Chess Club, mod- erated by Sr. Rose Bernard, has as its purpose the perpetuation of the time-honored game of chess. Club members compete among themselves and with players from other schools. Club officers are J. Barone, presi- dent, N. Banevich, secretary, and B. Gaugler, treasurer. C. Benson and B. Gaugler play a friendly game of chess while T. Heller and N. Banevich look on, trying to learn some new tricks. 116 Crusader Stall Puls Cul Firsl Class Paper C. Kimmel, J. Sekerak, P. Oslro-ski, S. Yes, I love to write copy, says Elaine Cardina as she struggles with a tricky phrase. At the beginning of the patron drive last October, no one could visualize lust what lay in store for the Bluebook staff in the months ahead. Following the spectacularly successful patron drive, the pizza party, and the movie were months of planning, picture taking, page layout, and copy writing. Then came the hectic paste-up. But, finally after months of worry, frustration, and anticipation, the book returned. lt stands as a memorial to the class of '65 and to the i965 school year. lt has served its pur- pose. lt has brought us together in pictures and now it stores our memories. I Without the help and guidance of our moderator, Father Schneider, the Bluebook could not have been successful.
