A Typist s Lament or How dad I ever get Into this mess Th1s 15 a sl1ghtly exaggerated short story of what our Blue Book Staff goes through to meet a deadl1ne To any non member the Blue Book Staff the pr1de and Job of our 1llus tr1ous h1gh school would seem l1ke awell orgamzed eff1c1ently run and expertly managed bus1ness But th1s w1dely estabhshed fact seems to ment many tlmes the questlomng glances of the lesser slaves who lxke myself are bound by solemn vow to fa1thfully serve the tyrann1cal department heads and the unbearable monarch1al ed1tor By way of proof let us take the pleasant peaceful Thursday evemng of Apr1l 5 1956 The t1me 15 th1rty mlnutes past the slxth hour as an 1ron key turns slowly 1n the padlock and the heavy door of the cold dark dungeoncreaks open to adm1t the sxlent slaves herded 1n by the menacmg tyrants The large room becomes ablaze w1th the l1ght of many candles The slaves are huddled together 1n a fr1ghtened group as the tyrants rant and rave about the work to be done Suddenly an enormous shadow darkens the thres hold and the monarch storms angr1ly 1nto the dungeons terr1fy1ng even the tyrants w1th the st1ng of h1s wh1p and the 1cy horror of h1s p1erc1ng voc1e To work w1th you he scream We haven't t1me to was ' y lls at a tyrant 'Are you prepared But s1r I beg1ns the tyrant No t1me for excuses ' he screams aga Slave' To your typewrlter' You must work' You there' Make use of that pencll bellows the tyrant master's b1dd1ng My red penc1l ' shouts the monarch as he glances frantlcally at the hour glass 1n the hope that lt would stop 1f only for awh1le Who has mls- placed my 1nk pen? he bellows A slave comes to the rescue and tr1es to calm h1m Calm down? says the monarch How canlbe calm when only s1x days rema1n unt1l the day of doom? The slave s1lently returns to h1s own desk 'Where 1S the copy gu1de ? shouts one tyrant Who has h1dden the copy paper? ' bellows another 'My plctures' My plctures' Who has taken my p1ctures? ' screams a th1rd And st1ll a fourth expresses the feelmg of the others I qu1t I just gwe up I wlll falnt at my desk 1f I do not rest before I contlnue wr1t1ng I can take no more of th1s Bedlam breaks loose but sllence agaln relgns supreme at the crack of the monarch's wh1p as he orders everyone to prepare to take leave of the dungeon For although bemg a monarch he real1zed that ne1ther tyrant nor slave 15 able to accompl1sh much 1n such a state of fat1gue The candles are blown out the tyrants eas1ly lead the slaves 1nto the hall the heavy door IS closed the 1ron key 15 agaln heard to turn ln the padlock anda weary and less exuberant monarch escorts tlred tyrants to thelr enormous su1tes and exhausted slaves to thelr respectlve cells 4 ' Q n h ' . as . . s n ' 1 ' 1 ' s 3 I ! 1 : , . n 9 , . . , .. s . ll ' ' : s. te!' he e .
