Saints Scuffed in Gpener, Victorious in Second The Panthers opened their '72 season with a poor showing at Rittman, Friday night, as they were handed a 44-0 shutout. The Saints' offense never really got started, as Rittman had control of the ball for most of the gameg and the defense could do little more than hope as ev- erything the Indians tried seemed to work. Although Rittman was the superior team, Coach Mehling felt the Panthers could have done better. The following week the Saints evened their record at 1-1, as they recorded a much needed victory over Western Reserve. The first time the Panthers had possessions, they scored, needing only eleven plays to do so, with Dave Kaman carrying it over from the four yard line. Ed Widman's kick made it 7-0. Western Reserve, recovering a Panther fumble, managed to score, but missed the conversion. Kaman then scored once more, after junior linebacker Ioe Schmenk recovered a Wildcat fumble. The kick attempt failed, and the Panthers held a slim 13-6 margin. The second half was all St. Mary's, as the Panthers scored on their first drive with Tim Roth going in from the 3 for the score. Brady's pass was incomplete. Kaman scored the final TD after a short drive. Ed Widman then split the uprights to make the final 26-6. First quarter score spells disaster. Ugg?
