The Saints' offense never really got started, as Rittman had control of the ball for most of the gameg and the defense could do little more than hope as ev- erything the Indians tried seemed to work. Although Rittman was the superior team, Coach Mehling felt the Panthers could have done better. The following week the Saints evened their record at 1-1, as they recorded a much needed victory over Western Reserve. The first time the Panthers had possessions, they scored, needing only eleven plays to do so, with Dave Kaman carrying it over from the four yard line. Ed Widman's kick made it 7-0. Western Reserve, recovering a Panther fumble, managed to score, but missed the conversion. Kaman then scored once more, after junior linebacker Ioe Schmenk recovered a Wildcat fumble. The kick attempt failed, and the Panthers held a slim 13-6 margin. The second half was all St. Mary's, as the Panthers scored on their first drive with Tim Roth going in from the 3 for the score. Brady's pass was incomplete. Kaman scored the final TD after a short drive. Ed Widman then split the uprights to make the final 26-6. First quarter score spells disaster. Ugg? 'E' Panthers open '72 season at Rittman. 64 Dave Morton breaks off a long gainer. Defense holds again! Brady rolls right searching for daylight Panthers Subdue Pirates 14-8 in 1st Conference Clash Tim Roth headed for oollision with Pirate defense. Brady has plenty of time to pass as Panther line holds. St. Mary's captured their first SBC victory of the season against host Perkins Pirates, with a 14-8 victo- ry. The Saints were first to score, after jeff Faber blocked a punt midway through the second quarter. They drove 53 yards in 16 plays with Tim Brady plunging to paydirt. The Panthers regained possession of the ball after Senior linebacker Ed Widman recovered a Perkins fumble. In just 6 plays the Panthers marched 36 yards for the score. A pass from Tim Brady to Larry Higgins made the score 14-0. The sole Perkins score came with only a minute left in the third quarter. A completed pass for the PAT finished the scoring and the Panthers remained on top 14-8. Tim Brady was praised for a fine performance in this game, as he carried the ball 21 times for 48 yards. The Panthers powered their way to a surprising 14- 0 first half lead over visiting Lorain Catholic, only to be upset in the final seconds of the game. The Pan- thers struck midway through the first quarter, driving 61 yards in 12 plays with Dave Kaman going over for the score. Ed Widman's kick was perfect. After receiving a punt on their own 34, the Saints marched 66 yards to paydirt, with Tim Brady sneaking over for the 6 points. Ed Widman added one more making it 14-0 at the half. The tide turned in the second half, though, as a 34 yard punt by Kaman was run back all the way for a score. The successful conversion made it 14-8. The Panther's defense held until just 3 minutes remained, as Lorain came on with a fabulous passing attack, to tie up the score. However, the kick gave the Irish a 15- 14 victory. The Panthers had second half difficulties again this week as St. Ioe took a 20-8 decision. St. Ioe scored early in the first period, after holding the Saints, and put across the conversion for an 8-0 lead. Dave Kaman scored the only Panther TD late in the second period after Tim Brady picked off a Fremont pass. Brady also scored the conversion to make it 8-8 at the half. St. Mary's found the going rough in the second half, though, as St. Ioe posted one TD in both the third and fourth periods, and at the same time held the Saints scoreless. The Saints finally came to life at Margaretta as both offense and defense sparkled the entire game. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Panthers marched 71 yards in 14 plays with Brady going over for the score. Ed Widman's placement made it 7-0. Soon after, the Panthers scored again as Tim Roth broke loose for 20 yards and the TD. Brady ran over for the bonus points. Roth scored another TD just before the half, as he darted in from the 3. The conversion failed. The second half saw Dave Kaman and Dave Morton get in on the scoring as each contributed 6 points. The reserves posted the final score as Sophomore Bob Iensen went over from the one, making it 39-0. 66 4 1 l Panthers trap Humn ballcarrier behind the line. Dave Kaman takes handoff from Tim Brady. Tiger back has nowhere to go as defense closes in. Speed was the important factor as Huron topped the Panthers 21-7, putting the Saints out of the SBC action. The host Panthers jumped out to an early lead as Dave Kaman rounded left end for the score midway through the first period. Ed Widman's kick made it 7- 0. Huron soon tied it up, then went ahead, though, as they scored two second quarter TD's, both on long, speedy j aunts. A second half defensive effort by the Panthers was magnificent, as they kept Huron from scoring until just one minute was left in the game, but the offense could never really get any momentum going as they fumbled away two TD bids. Junior joe Schmenk was praised by the coaching staff for fine defensive efforts, as he was named the Panther of the Week. Friday night's game against Fostoria was left en- tirely to the defense, as the mud and rain completely inunobilized the Panthers' offense. The Saints' deepest penetration of the game came in the third period as they drove to the Mohawk 15, but their drive ended there after running out of downs. The only other scoring threat of the game was made by St. Wendelin late in the fourth period, as they moved in to the Panther one yard line. The Saints defense came alive and ended the threat by holding out on a fourth and one situation. Time ran out, leaving the score unchanged at 0-0. The Flyers scored late in the first period and early in the second to post a 12-0 half time lead over the Saints. A second half comeback for the Panthers was futile after two interceptions and another tally by Clyde. The fourth period saw just one more scoring drive and Clyde smade it 26-0, with only a few minutes remaining in the contest. Dave Kaman received the Panther of the Week laurels for the second time this year. C3lVBI't'S first scoring drive took place in the second period after a Panther push was halted. A nine yard pass for the six points and a successful PAT made it 8- 0. Shortly after, the panthers fumbled the ball away and Tiffin again passed for a TD: the conversion failed. That was all of the scoring Tiffin could manage and the Panthers poured on the defense in the second half. The Saints offense could never reach paydirt, as they gave away every opportunity they received. Ieff Faber was honored as Panther of the Week for his second time this season.
