Suddenly one pauses and is startled by the realization that hundreds have gone forth from Saint Mary's hoping to make this World a better place in which to live, labor, and love. Now it is our turn to step over the threshold of school life into manhood and Womanhood. Having in mind the same idea of casting a radiant glow of truth and justice around our sphere of endeavors, we have chosen as the theme of our 1958 Ave Maria the motto which we hope will be our aim during life: Better to light one candle than to curse the dark- ness. As we peruse these pages in later years, our memories will be refreshed as We recall the rays of love, reverence, and courage that came to us from the faculty, rays of hope, conti- dence, and industry from our classmates, rays ol respect, admiration, and trust from underclassmen. The beams of light and knowledge which we grasped during these four years will guide us on through life, piercing the darkness of error and revealing the brilliance of truth, until the light of our one candle casts a golden ray of peace on all whom we meet. You have made brighter the light of the one candle ot truth and justice by your honest, upright, and Christlike endeavors in the pro- fessions, politics, business, and industry. He has addressed religious, doctors, lawyers, youth, parents, technicians, politicians, rhetoricians. His endeavor to help and encourage reaches out to the poor, the persecuted, the sinner, and the saint. He is a man of God, sa man of prayer, Who aims to be all things to all men. The Most Reverend Thomas A. Boland D.D.. LL.D., S.T.D. Archbishop of Newark As a soul needs power and guidance, so does a diocese. These forces radiate to all parts of our archdiocese from the dynamic personality oi Arch- bishop Boland. In a quiet, gentle, and Christlike way, he leads souls to God, guided by the light of his personal love of Mary Immaculate. ffff- Right Reverend Monsignor Iohn Edward Kiernan M A . LL D Pastor and Supervisor Before saying farewell, we Wish to express our appreciation to Monsignor Kiernan for giving us the opportunity to start on the road to becoming men and women who will try to make the world a little better. May we reflect in our daily lives the virtues that have become deeply rooted in us here at Saint Mary's. We feel privileged to have Saint Mary's for our Alma Mater and to you, Monsignor, we say from our hearts, A most fervent thank you. September 9, 1957, one o'clock, finds the freshmen ready to enter and start life as high school students. It looks as if the freshmen want to come to school! They can hardly wait for the door to open. These freshmen registered mixed feelings as they started their school life in Saint Mary's High. Their expressions seem to say, What will high school be like? Stephen Bowbliss, Connie Rogucki, Carolyn Downey, loseph Majcher, Mary Ann Gerrity, Richard Garlipp. Our excited and happy freshmen entered the audi- torium where they were welcomed by Father Meyer. Father spoke to them in a stern voice, tinged with kindness. High marks would have to be obtained in the following years. Cooperation among the students themselves, and with the faculty was stressed. Con- duct, obedience, honesty, and truthfulness are all part of the program which is to be found at St. Mary's. i . f SZ S ln the classrooms the freshmen receiveda preview of the studies and activities which would take place dur- ing the year. Sister went on to say that as the freshmen enter a new school, they also approach a new phase of life which demands more responsibility to God and to their parents. In conclusion she reminded the new students that if they apply themselves to the best of their ability in everything, she will always stand behind them. STUDENT COUNCIL Under the supervision ot Father Meyer and its able officers, our Student Council has brought the students and faculty closer to- gether. Throughout the year, the Student Council has been an important and vital part ot the routine at St. Mary's. The Council is run on the principle that the self-governed are the best governed. The task ot a Councilor is not an easy one. though you may be sure it is worthwhile. It is important to the school as far as the students are concerned, for here they can come with their criticisms and problems and feel that they will be given a square deal . They realize that they are speaking to people who have sympathy with them. They are speaking to people who see their side of the problem, be- cause they themselves are students. The Council has started many projects dur- ing the year to help improve order throughout the school. Their efforts have been greatly appreciated by the students of St. Mary's. Its centerpiece is a sparkling spinel stone of blue. This is the color appropriate to Mary, because it symbolizes constancy, fidelity and truth. Blue, and the gold of the ring are in accord with the traditional colors in which Mary is depicted in ecclesiastical art. A beautiful silhouette of Mary in garments of simple splendor, her hand over her Immaculate Heart, is the foremost image of the right side, or shank of the ring. Her haloed head is circled with stars. Thus is recalled the ancient prophecy of the Apocalypse: A woman clothed with the sun . . . and on her head a crown ot twelve stars. In dual tribute to her purity and Chastity, two lilies in full bloom appear as traditional symbols of these attributes of Our Lady. The left side or shank is symbolic of Saint Mary's School. Beneath the identifying monogram the circular crest displays the school seal. Finally, surmounting the monogram is the regal crown, a recurrent emblem of the theme of the ring, to honor our Lady as Queen. 107 '4 W Bernice Sahli and her escort chat with Father McKenna.
