St. Mary's Wins The Eastern Catholic Tournament Once more we can look back with pride as another 1955-1956 basketball season comes to a close. Saint Mary's Varsity completed its schedule with an 18-3 record with an impressive victory over Cranford and again capturing the city championship from jeffer- son High. After the regular schedule ended, the Union County Tournament rolled around and we were seeded second. Although we did not capture the crown, the team played excellent ball against Xlifestfield and Union High Schools, being defeated by Sacred Heart. Still with the determination to win the sixth consecutive State Catholic B title the Hill- top boys reached the final round only to be defeated by St. Aloysius of Jersey City. But do not let it be said that St. Mary's would not capture any titles. On March 21 they went to New- port, Rhode Island to compete in the 19th annual Eastern Catholic Invitation Tournament. Through the untiring efforts of a fine coach, Al LoBalbo, the boys bounced back to win the E.S.C.I.T championship in Elizabeth's top comeback performance of the year. Loaded with what LoBalbo termed as sheer heart the St. Mary's cagers climaxed their courageous stand with a 50-49 victory over the favored Allentown Catholic. Sincerest congratulations to Coach Al LoBalbo and his championship team for bringing glory to Saint Mary's High. SCHEDULE Saint Mary's Opponents 53 ......
