May this yearbook revive for us our warm and friendly days at Saint Mary's. May we look back and through this yearbook find the inspiration and hope that our Catholic education and teachers have instilled in us. Through their efforts we hope to take our rightful places in the world with a sense of honor and ethics acquired at Saint Mary's in our years here. To the many classes following us we leave a legacy of learning and laughter and a wish to be remembered. Many will be the changes in the faces of both the student body and faculty, but long may the spirit of Saint Mary's live. May we of the class of '56 repay our Alma Mater by allowing her to have the pride in us we have always had in her. 5 ig P I W3 SISTER JANE SEBASTIAN Principal During the short time you have been with us, we have Come to realize what a challenge awaits us after we graduate and what responsibilities lie before us. You have aided in the forming of the schools government and have uplifted the aims of the Student Body. We thoroughly acknowledge the worthwhile ideas you have given us for the future, and can truly say, as a teacher and principal, you will always be remembered. SISTER JANE SABASTIAN advised Shirley Dobrynski on a puzzling algebra ques- tion while the rest of the class listens. Saint Mary's Varsity completed its schedule with an 18-3 record with an impressive victory over Cranford and again capturing the city championship from jeffer- son High. After the regular schedule ended, the Union County Tournament rolled around and we were seeded second. Although we did not capture the crown, the team played excellent ball against Xlifestfield and Union High Schools, being defeated by Sacred Heart. Still with the determination to win the sixth consecutive State Catholic B title the Hill- top boys reached the final round only to be defeated by St. Aloysius of Jersey City. But do not let it be said that St. Mary's would not capture any titles. On March 21 they went to New- port, Rhode Island to compete in the 19th annual Eastern Catholic Invitation Tournament. Through the untiring efforts of a fine coach, Al LoBalbo, the boys bounced back to win the E.S.C.I.T championship in Elizabeth's top comeback performance of the year. Loaded with what LoBalbo termed as sheer heart the St. Mary's cagers climaxed their courageous stand with a 50-49 victory over the favored Allentown Catholic. Sincerest congratulations to Coach Al LoBalbo and his championship team for bringing glory to Saint Mary's High. SCHEDULE Saint Mary's Opponents 53 ......
