The graduating class of '81 remembers with deep affection and appreciation a teacher who, for more than ten years, has been a constant inspiration to everyone at Saint Mary’s Hall. This gentleman tried most unsuccessfully to conceal from us his very deep affection for his students as people and his real concern for our advancement in knowl- edge, wisdom, and virtue. To all about him, he has set an example of loyalty, courage, and devotion to duty which will inspire us in the days to come. We take pride and joy in dedicating La Reata 1981 to Colonel Sterling R. John- son. 3

A Word from the Headmistress One factor contributing to the uniqueness of Saint Mary’s Hall is that we are not an institution of learning so much as we are a family of learners and, being a family, we learn from each other. As a family, each of us is enriched by the other. Students, we as administration and faculty hope you have learned from us some what's, some how's and some why's: you have taught us generosity and geniality, commitment and caring, sincerity and sensitivity. We are the better for having known you. Our wish for you is that in your life, with all of your families, you will have both challenge and fulfillment and that this family will have helped you meet the one and achieve the other. 5 Joan Mellard Headmistress
