La Reata 1981 Saint Mary’s Hall San Antonio, Texas Col. Sterling R. Johnson U.S.A. rtd. The graduating class of '81 remembers with deep affection and appreciation a teacher who, for more than ten years, has been a constant inspiration to everyone at Saint Mary’s Hall. This gentleman tried most unsuccessfully to conceal from us his very deep affection for his students as people and his real concern for our advancement in knowl- edge, wisdom, and virtue. To all about him, he has set an example of loyalty, courage, and devotion to duty which will inspire us in the days to come. We take pride and joy in dedicating La Reata 1981 to Colonel Sterling R. John- son. 3 Board of Trustees Mr. Robert R. Archer The Rt. Rev. Scott Field Bailey Chairman Mr. William B. Blakemore II Mrs. Lon Cartwright Miss Lica Elena East Mrs. F. Daniel Foley Mrs. Hugh K. Musgrave III President, 1980-81 4 A Word from the Headmistress One factor contributing to the uniqueness of Saint Mary’s Hall is that we are not an institution of learning so much as we are a family of learners and, being a family, we learn from each other. As a family, each of us is enriched by the other. Students, we as administration and faculty hope you have learned from us some what's, some how's and some why's: you have taught us generosity and geniality, commitment and caring, sincerity and sensitivity. We are the better for having known you. Our wish for you is that in your life, with all of your families, you will have both challenge and fulfillment and that this family will have helped you meet the one and achieve the other. 5 Joan Mellard Headmistress A jig-saw puzzle consists of many pieces which must be fitted together correctly in order to form a meaningful picture. Yet if one piece is misplaced or lost, the whole picture is ruined. The Saint Mary's Hall community, consisting as it does of many individuals and groups, also forms a meaningful composition. Each aspect of our school life can be likened to a piece in a puzzle in that each individual and group inter- acts upon the other to form the Saint Mary’s Hall family. For these reasons we have chosen the puzzle to illustrate this year's theme of unity. We Join Together Calvin K. Gloria V. move in with Mary. The joys of registration. Who could ever forget those ERB’s! Can you say Blue Tie ? Black Tie Skit Traditionally, members of the graduating class shed their black ties in the form of a humorous skit, to prepare themselves for the following morning when they receive their blue ties. Upper School Student Council and Middle School Senate play a vital part in the administration of justice within the school community and act as liaison between the student body and school administration. The individual members of each body, like pieces in a jig-saw puzzle, form distinct groups which combine to establish the unity of Saint Mary’s Hall. L to R: F. The program is for boys and girls, ages eight through fifteen, and boarding students come from areas throughout the United States and Mexico. The students choose their own courses from over forty classes in the arts. The Summer Arts Program is the only one of its kind in the United States; the combining of the arts and English as a Second Language is unique in this country. An Arts Festival is held at the end of each summer, and the Festival for 1981 will be on July 25. 32 Organizations Drama Club This year the Drama Club has staged two marvelous plays: the mystery Angel Street and the restoration comedy The Way of the World. Though many long hours have been spent working in darkrooms, designing creative layouts, and meeting our frequent deadlines, it is you, the students, faculty, and friends of Saint Mary's Hall who have made this book a genuine success. I express deep gratitude to my dedicated staff, whose energy and strength have been tremendously inspirational, and I pray that this 1981 picture book may evoke endlessly warm memories of a truly exceptional year.
