QJLL0' QLTLE ' ,N Qucqgkgwjgmjzxk MQ foreword Every edition of La Reafa binds the past and present to the future of the Saint Mary's Hall family. In a similar manner, the tie which forms so conspicuous a part of the school uniform reinforces our sense of unity. The tie, incidentally, is worn in the form of a knotted loop which is the essential element in Ia reafa, the cowhand's rope from which our yearbook takes its name. The tie has practical uses, but its primary purpose is to serve as the distinguishing mark of all those who belong to Saint Mary's Hall. The bond of the tie serves as a tangible symbol of that invisible rope of love, pride, and shared experiences which connects the students of 1879 to those of 1980 and to those of the years to come.

headmistress' address Our commencement speaker of last year, Mr. Herbert D. Kelleher, concluded his beautiful address to the seniors with the following remarks: We are, indeed, a band of sisters and brothers-sisters and brothers against the Universe. For if we do not like each other-and forgive each 'other-and help each other-then who, as long as we are on earth, will either like-or forgive-or help-us? Or even care? Long after the graduation ceremony was history, those words lingered in my thoughts. We are indeed all brothers and sisters simply by virtue of being a part of human kind -not one of us is an island, but is, as Donne would say, a part of the whole. Mr. Kelleher was speaking on the plane of the universal, but what is philosophically true of the macrocosm is observably so in the microcosm of a school. The fabric of our day-to-day existence is woven of multiple relationships, each tinged with its special coloring, each adding to the texture of the Saint Mary's Hall experience, and all tying us together socially, professionally, and personally into a cohesive, unified commu- nity. Joan Mellard Headmistress
