Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1956 volume:

mv A PSALM OF LIFE WHAT THE HEART or T1-IE YOUNG MAN SAID To THE PSALMIST Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dreamt - For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goalg Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined encl or wayg But to act, that each tomorrow Find us farther than today. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and hrave, Still, like muffled drums are heating Funeral marches to the grave. In the worlcrs broad field of battle, In the hivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act.-1 act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erheaclt Lives of great men-all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time: Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, he up and doing, With a heart for any fate: Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. Henry Vvadswortlr Longfellow KARL DICKINSON 288 FELIX FISHER RD. S. Though many classes seem a hore, The P.E. class most girls are for. They're wild and rought, hut when theyyre done, You must admit they're really fun. Life turns sweet at half past noon. East French Pl e San Auto Texas VOLUME I NO. 1 FATHERS' DAY BIG SUCCESS Brotherhood Week Observed The Chapel service Monday, February 20 was led by Chaplain Ora Cohee, Colonel in the U. S. Army, retired, in observance of National Brotherhood Week. He stressed the need for brother- hood among the peoples of the world because of our interdependence on one another. Although there are a variety of languages and of color of skin We are all children of the same God. Furthermore, the hopes and ideals of all races are basically the same, whether in north or south, east, or west. In closing, he cited San Antonio as an excellent example of co-operation be- tween the Protestant, Catholic, and Jew- ish faiths. He appealed to us to spread this example of brotherhood to all parts of the world. FATHERS Some men are the best men ever Because they constantly endeavor, They give you what you want the most And never seem to over-boast. Jean Morris Form III Once there was a cat. Once there was a rat. And they both were fat. And they lived in a hat. The cat got the rat, And that was that.
