Further than the firm grasp you have of the fundamentals of education, the knowledge that this School has had a part in the develop- ment of character, always your real strength and always encouraging you to think independently, gives me deep gratification. As I mention the successful conclusion ol your high school work. I am mindful of the greatest satisfaction I have in my position as Head Mistress of Saint Mary s Hall. The French Club, dedicated to better understanding ol the French people and their language, began its activities for the year of 1949 with participation in a worthy, if not French, cause — that ol making and selling programs lor the County Fair. Only after the Fair did the old members feel they were able to devote their full attention to the initiation of the eager pledges of French II. Climaxing their week of probation with a talented dance by Dee Ann Andricks and Peggy Pegram. and a dramatic presentation entitled, Le Voyage de Monsieur Perrichon. the new members were then able to take part in the plans for the long awaited trip to Austin, the high point in a very full year of Le Circle Francais. I be students of Saint Mary s Hall first became aware of the Spanish Club s activities for the year of 1949 one Monday morning when fourteen girls arrived at school wearing white mantillas, large signs announcing to all their new roles as criadas. and embarassed looks as they attempted to be eloquent in the Spanish language. During the remainder of the week the students accustomed themselves to groups of two and three criadas huddled in a corner, whispering furtively and glancing cautiously around the room to reassure themselves that no old members were able to hear them speaking English. I he initiation rites were completed at last, and the new members were eagerly awaiting their chance in the club s program. 1 heir wish was granted when they donned peasant skirts and blouses and assisted in the tamale booths at the County Fair. The Spanish C lub would not have been complete without the breaking of a pinata at sometime during the year. Fulfillment came when the members delightedly shattered Santa Claus's head at the Christmas meeting which Senora Nanez so kindly held at her house. The year’s events were climaxed at the annual banquet as the Seniors bade El Margil a fond farewell. — jane Corrin, Secretary PACE r.8 mi; tennis ax ;b I HE RIDING ('l l B PAGE 59 French, we ho| e! At any rate the exciting event was the volley ball game ol the season wi th the Llliott I ine up having Mary Jane Cameron, Milby Booth, Anne Langston, Mary Anne Smith. Gladys Bondurant, JoAnne Rote, Louise Harding, Kinny Sayward, Kathleen Holland. Leila Clark. (Lieutenant) and Linda Nixon (Captain). On the Capers side ol the court were Kittie Nelson. Sallie Grady. Jill Brav, Barbara Kendall, Caroline May, Sally Garrett, Joan Negley, Anne Wells, Margaret Anderson. Gretel Seidel and Betty Brewer (Lieutenant) and Joci Levi (Captain). I o say that spirit was high during the game would be rather an understatement lor more than a lew girls were being beaten on the head by over-exuberant team mates. Perhaps the most outstanding play ol the game arrived when Lulu Harding, in attempting a retrieve ol the ball fell squarely, il not gracefully, into an expectant waste paper basket. No doubt Lulu will be the shining star ol the luture basketball games. In spite of Capers fighting spirit, the linal score was a victory lor the EJliotts of forty- eight to twenty-nine on this the twenty-sixth ol October. PAGE 79 SOCCER AI .1 ,-STAR Everyone welcomed the soccer season with the gayest of spirits save M rs. Hoch; she seemed slightly discouraged over the number and magnitude ol the lumps and bruises acquired by the girls during practice. According to the bulletin board Zan Sullivan. Kinny Sayward, Milby Booth, Bird Jago, Linda Nixon. Lulu Harding, Sally Fall, JoAnne Rote, Mary Jane Cameron, Nancy Emerson, Anne Langston, Leila Clark Mary Anne Smith, Patsy Ad am and Leilabeth Galbraith comprised the Elliott All-Star team, and the Capers pinned their hope of victory on Anne Wells. Connie Hill. Martha Perk ins, Joan Negley, Joci Levi. Yvonne Brown. Joan Otto, Sally Garrett. Barbara Kendall. Jean Falkstein, Isabel Brown, Gretel Seidel, Betty Brewer, Kitty Nelson and Annie Mae Funk. I hose who saw this All-Star game declared it the best played soccer ever witnessed at Saint Mary s Hall. Both teams were working hard for the points that will mean so much on Bishops Day. Sally Garrett had put her whole heart so surely in the game that she succeeded in sitting decorously on the ball at the crucial moment — (at any rate. Sally, that accident insured no one s taking the ball). I he game ended with a score ol C apers 1, Elliotts 0. PAGE 80 BASKETBALL ALL-STAR Reeking through the key hole in the gym. The Breakfast Club In keeping will I lie traditional good-will of Breakfast Clubs, this organization lias embued in its members those ebullient spirits which make lor early morning cheer. I he severest of all our critics regard the organization with feelings akin to horror. I hey little realize the amicable re lat ions that are promoted by such six o clock sessions of learning. From Mary Anne Smith, to whose ears the alarm clock is music, we have learned that the cliche Practice makes Perfect.” is not altogether outmoded. As summoner of I he Breakfast C lub, she has developed the ability to travel throughout Senior Mouse with only minor injuries, lime was for us. when six o’clock traveling was likewise extremely perilous — so blind were we all to the dangers of closet doors, chairs, and steps. Joan Otto, in joining our club, has shown another evidence of her thriftiness, for now she has added an extra hour for worrying in her time-budget. Another contribution comes from Martha Perkins. I he Spartan control of her goose-bumps on frosty mornings is to be admired, considering the inadequate manner in which they are dressed. Marjorie Field we thank for her demonstrations of physical aptness in showing that there are more ways than one to wrap around a radiator. Isabel Brown has added finesse to the art of mumbling, to say nothing of the addition to our knowledge of French verbs. Our thanks also to Virginia Jago for her unequaled munching capacity. Seldom has one exhibited such talent in this field: her timing and rhythm are unprecedented. We congratulate Peggy Pegram for her skillful manipula- tion of the furniture. Although not in keeping with the breakfast-clubbers is such an energetic display of vitality, we sympathize with her in her insatiable desire for light. Patsy Adam, like- wise is to be complimented on her domestic aptitude. She has developed extraordinary skill in the opening of Nescafe jars: neither can her dexterity with teaspoons be overlooked. I o our deprivation. Sally Garrett seldom attends the meetings, finding the solitude of her boudoir more responsive to her oral practice of Spanish. Honorary members of our club are Suzanne Sullivan. Lei la Clark, and Pamela Parr, who find the arms of Morpheus more enticing. Pay-off: Excellents in all subjects! — Barbara Kendall PAGE 9S Ilie Residence. Each year toward the end o( September when the girls have become acquainted thoroughly with each other, they elect a small group ol girls to serve as the Residence Council. I hese girls on the Council represent their classmates in questions dealing with the improvement of the girls conduct, the organization of parties, special suppers and dances, and the undertaking of various projects. I his year the program upon which the council worked was full hut interesting. Since this year an honor system was introduced, the Council has striven to help each girl to understand the full merit of a a good honor system and to realize the value to her per- sonal integrity in the close observance of the simple rules of this system. I he council furthermore has made possible for the Residence to sponsor and to provide for an improveris hed rural school. To this, the New Hope School, have been sent books, clothing, gymnastic equipment and presents on such occasions as Christmas. Valentines Day and Easter, bora Lenten project the council has undertaken to learn braille writing and I hen to teach the other girls so that each year a book written in braille may be sent to schools and homes for the blind. Besides these worthy projects, the council under the kind sponsorship of Mrs. Pouquet has endeavored to bind the Residence girls into a strong, friendly unit by showing them the value of co-operation and the awareness of others. — Mary Anne Smith PAGE 98 Ou7- docs everything.
