I9 6 Henry Benjamin Whipple Shattuck Saint Mary's Hall Saint James THE BISHOP WHIPPLE SCHOOLS OF FARIBAULT, MINNESOTA Foreword . . . Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit, wrote Vergil in his Aeneid. Perhaps sometime it will help to remember even these things - and isn't that what a yearbook's for? This book is far less than our hopes for it. We had planned a hefty historical section - our modest Bicentennial contribution. For some inscrutable reason it didn't get done. And there's no theme: Spirit of '76 didn't grab us, but we couldn't think up a better one. Actually, the book lacks even a name! Thanks to Photographers Erik Jensen, Doug Todd, and Jim Pabst S'73, to Editor Tim Falck, who did most of the darkroom workg to John N. Smith, Jr., of American Yearbook Co., to John and Bobbi Sumnerg to Mildred Marple and Donald B. Purringtonp to James W. King, Jr., who co-ordinated the ad campaign, and to Dr. E. John Dyer, who tried to be patient. Special thanks to Phillip R. Trout S'73 - he spent most of his Christmas vacation helping. Though it's late and not all it could or should be, Perhaps sometime it will help .... R.E.N., Advisor 8 if A , i 1 , J I, M . an-, ff xi-Q 0 f ' 4 Q-f if fx .ix 5 fy XX? To the credit of the defense, all Red victories were shutouts. Averaging 21 points per game, the Shads scored 168 to their opponents' 62. The first two games - perhaps the toughest - proved humbling. But Mr. Davis, the new head coach, inspired pride. ll-iis Ha Shake, Salt 'n' Pepper and Big Red Beat routine will long be rememberedj Momentum generated, and the Shads started to win. Losses to Claremont and Randolph cost a chance at the Centennial championship, but the victory over Mazeppa was especially sweet. Somehow the Shad defense in the waning minutes was able to withstand seven attempts from almost right on the Shattuck goal line. Junior Bruce Foster got the Capron trophy as Most- Valuable player. Sllathltk 56 Waterville The Shads got off to a slow start, rested during Christmas while their competition practiced, and mostly spun their wheels afterwards. Coach Ion Freeman kept predicting a late-season comeback, but it didn't materialize. There was one thriller though - Big Red beat Waterville by a single point in double overtime. Newboy Senior Tyrone Artis was top scorer with 242, followed by Riordan 12041. Tyrone also was named MVP and All-Conference. Cobb and Riordan were Co-captains. St. James The Iamies' record was a heartbreaking 0-6, but Coach George Wadsworth felt that the Little Blue made real progress during the season. Editor-in-Chief Wade Penn managed to get out seven issues in '75-76, despite broken promises and the other slings and arrows a student editor is heir to. His was a controversial, even crusading, paper - remember Is Bishwhip Getting Its Money's Worth? But it was also a whimsical one, with Yaps and parodies on Tower and K.G. Wilkins' soliloquies. At year's end, Dean Koerth was elected editor for '76-77. 'Tower' Tower - a dittoed, semi- underground news-sheet marked by spontaneity, frivolity, and general irreverence - sprang forth full-blown from the head of one Dave Bonus to meet a real need: the respectable old Spec wasn't coming out very often! In Iune you know we must part, but we leave here a large part of our hearts, our hearts. For you we shed a tear, you all have grown so dear, but, friends, we soon must bid adieu. Don't forget we love you, love you. Did you ever leave someplace that you knew you loved? Did you ever lose someone you were thinking of? Well, we'll take our memories and your love too. So, farewell to all of you, now that we'll be leaving. Good-bye, we love you, all our hearts are grieving.
