Mrs M1gHOH Payne Mignon Payne attended Memphis State and the University of Tennessee, after which she returned home to Memphis to teach at Springdale Kindergarten for seventeen years. During this time, she married Fred Payne, presently retired in Memphis, and had a daughter, Rita, who now resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Last fall, after several operations for cancer, Mrs. Payne died , despite our great sorrow, we can all be comforted by the strength of the ideals she encour- aged in her kindergarteners and in all who knew her - those of sharing, loving, and learning. We will all remember Mrs. Payne as a person who, by her exam- ple, could teach us to love unhesitatingly. The sudden and unexpected death of Mignon Payne left us all in a state of shock and grief which is difficult to express. Her love for St. Mary's and her willingness to con- tribute in any field of endeavor were boundless. Whether she was coaching a little boys' softball team fwe did have little boysj, coaching the big girls' volley- ball team, planning the curriculum for our kindergar- ten, directing our graduation program fcomparable to Broadway productionsj, or just being a true friend to us all, she was incomparable! Mignon contributed much to our lives, and to say that we miss her is too trite. As long as there is someone at St. Mary's who had the privilege of knowing, loving, and being influenced by her, she will truly live on. She expected great things of our school and has passed on to us the responsibility of keeping St. Mary's the fine institution of learning and living that it has been. We thank God for her memory. - Mrs. Julia Hughes, Kindergarten Teacher
