Mr. Leech is an articulate man, whose versatility enables him to speak well on any subject- be it libraries, schools, women's education, or chapel announce- ments. He has attended various schools in the course of his career and has attained several degrees. Among these are a B.A. in English and an M.A. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, a B.S. in L.S. from Drexel University, and a Master of Divinity from Phila- delphia Divinity School. Mr. Leech has previously served as head librarian at Roanoke Col- lege, Vicar at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, Chaplain at St. Andrew's School and Vicar at St. Andrew's School Chapel in Middletown, Delaware, and as founding headmaster of Randolph School, Huntsville, Alabama. He joins us most recently from his post as headmaster of Oregon Episcopal Schools in Portland. His wife is the former Doris Redman Brown of St. Paul, Minnesota, and his two children, Amy and Bill, attend, respectively, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Memphis University School. The 1974-75 school year holds promise of even better years to come and of innovations soon to be made. St. Mary's welcomes Mr. Leech, his wit, his genial personality, and his beautiful family to Memphis. 5 E 4 T iv R s gill ah' L The Clergy ,rw if 5 ABOVE: The Rev. Duane T. Saba and The Rev. james L. These meetings were arranged mainly by Ms. Pitcock, this year's college advisor, and Ms. Davis, Dean of Girls, and Ms. Gill. The College Advisors And New Faculty Members Mrs M1gHOH Payne Mignon Payne attended Memphis State and the University of Tennessee, after which she returned home to Memphis to teach at Springdale Kindergarten for seventeen years. During this time, she married Fred Payne, presently retired in Memphis, and had a daughter, Rita, who now resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Last fall, after several operations for cancer, Mrs. Payne died , despite our great sorrow, we can all be comforted by the strength of the ideals she encour- aged in her kindergarteners and in all who knew her - those of sharing, loving, and learning. We will all remember Mrs. Payne as a person who, by her exam- ple, could teach us to love unhesitatingly. The sudden and unexpected death of Mignon Payne left us all in a state of shock and grief which is difficult to express. Her love for St. Mary's and her willingness to con- tribute in any field of endeavor were boundless. Whether she was coaching a little boys' softball team fwe did have little boysj, coaching the big girls' volley- ball team, planning the curriculum for our kindergar- ten, directing our graduation program fcomparable to Broadway productionsj, or just being a true friend to us all, she was incomparable! Mignon contributed much to our lives, and to say that we miss her is too trite. As long as there is someone at St. Mary's who had the privilege of knowing, loving, and being influenced by her, she will truly live on. She expected great things of our school and has passed on to us the responsibility of keeping St. Mary's the fine institution of learning and living that it has been. We thank God for her memory. - Mrs. Julia Hughes, Kindergarten Teacher is 'Y 5 im S Q V - V N i x , 55 w A .N'sf'2, H5 .X ., wi :Q .,-' ,.3f .'f 4 2 ,-. Honor Council The Honor System is a vital part of the life at St. Mary's. This system encourages each student to be on her honor to pursue at all times the ideals for which St. Mary's stands. The purpose of any effective honor code should be to uphold the ideals of hon- esty prescribed by an honor code, in order to maintain a trustful atmosphere. The Honor Council at St. Mary's is made up of thir- teen representatives 5 two representatives from each grade plus the President from the twelfth grade and the secretary is one of the eleventh grade members. The Honor Council is not controlled by the adminis- tration nor responsible to it This system cannot work and the council cannot operate without the sup- port of every student. At S.M.S. the Honor Code is a way of life, not just an idealistic dream. TOP LEFT: Sec. Lucy Loveless, Pres. Watty Brooks. ABOVE: G. Barron, T. Lupo, and M. Walt. TO RIGHT: MEMBERS: TOP, l. to r.: C. This group consists of the presidents and vice-presi- dents of grades seven through twelve, plus one student council representative from each grade. This group meets once a month with Mr. Leech and Mrs. Davis to discuss suggestions submitted by St. Mary's stu- dents. T 2 Q- 1 wit' . we--'L .WK . 1.-.2 , 1 . fs. Student Council Much of the enthusiasm of St. Mary's is aroused by the Student Council. They begin the year with Derby Day in the second week of school. Derby Day welcomes new students and prepares both the new and old for a year of competition and spirit. In October, the Student Council sponsors the Halloween Bazaar and at Christmas the Stu- dent Council organizes skits and encour- ages class unity and participation in deco- rating the halls. During the second semes- ter, the council has a Talent Show. One ofthe most active weeks in the school year is that of Student Council elec- tions. The spirit of competition is great throughout the speeches and skits but the involvement of each student is possibly the best outcome of elections. Spirit, involvement and respect are ins- tilled by the Student Council. This group, aided by the support of the entire student body, accomplishes these goals. The result of a strong Student Council is a strong stu- dent body. fg .isss ss ,.... v-gf: f K. W s ' 4' 'Wy' N OPP. PAGE: CLUB REP.: STANDING: A. Gil- liom, R. Burr, N. Golden, M. Flowers, S. The Carillon staff spent infinate hours compiling this volume containing over ZOO pages of pictures and cutlines that depict life at S.M.S. Our editor, Angie Rose, began work on the '74-'75 annual last spring when she selected her staff of forty-two stu- dents. During the summer Angie and several members of her staff attended a workshop at Ole Miss where they gath- ered ideas and began preparation for a year of hard work. Many Saturdays would find a certain group of forty-two people working intently on the Carillon, and Miss O'Sullivan, the faculty advisor, needle- point in hand, ready to help whenever she was needed. Besides chapel services, the choir gives several evening con- certs but their most impor- tant engagements are those in the spring on their sing- ing tour. Last year the choir traveled the Mid-South area singing both choral and popular music. The choir is open to girls from grades seven through twelve whether they believe that they can sing or not. The 1974-75 Carillon staff deserves special recognition for their devotion and interest which were shown by their many hours of tedious labor. Several inventive minds were brought together throughout the course of this school year. This brought rise to incomparable ideas and changes which are evident in this yearbook and will, no doubt, better the yearbooks of the future. Being editor of the Carillion has given me a taste of the business world and has caused me to make several friends and probably just as many ene- mies. I merely hope that my book truly expresses the life and ideals of St. Mary's.
