When de- fined, spirit is the feeling and ef- fort that is in a person that they show for a specific cause. Every- day faculty and students show their spirit by the work and invol- vent to the community. We all are all part of the spirit at St. Mary's. Through our involvement in the arts, sports, and academicsg we show our support by making St. Mary's a better place for us. 41 ,, I -,. :ff -I 51 .ym?QN,vfiQ' - Q, 5-'ZW ' ',K'1:.'4, 4 - - V ,s IL -. .1 fjfgl-,f+ raxZt1,':J.53,':,t 1-.:A.,-- w ,wg , W1 , an , WF35 3F?2 in 4 Q .Nr M ,Mm .X ii md '9 s gg 'Ji 'BF I 05 sv 4 il, - f 1- -F nv'-. Bro. Michael greeted us with a speech about being the class of 1987. but who would think it would ever happen. Under the leadership of Freshman President Paul Smith, we began the year in anticipation of groud-breaking gor ther skateboard ramp. the swimming pool. and ski lcum promised during the campaign, 0ur first high school festivities were the saw-dust daneesg and if there ever was a DJ, worse the Dr, Funk. it was Sam Mack at the Frosh mixer. Only he would mix Def Leppard with l Need a Freak. We en- tered in a musical world with Mr.Barret's Begin' ning Band and the First year of the Chorus. Bro. Michael ASKED us to be members of the chorus. and who was dumb enough not to say yes. Early on in our days at St. Mary's we got the 501 Blues in every color but blue. except when worn with black loafers. Hernan Kusnetloff was black and blue after flying up the bleachers with a little help from Br, .lohn Cislo. And speaking of flying high. Andy Shimabukuru was the first freshman to make the Varsity Baseball Team. This must have been the year for sports. because our basketball x QT' team won the frosh cage title. At the end of the year we lost the wisdom of Mr. Al lsola, who went on to other things. The beginning of our sophomore year brought many changes. Everybody came back to school with a better self-image. or so they said. The year also brought some new faces. such as John The Tree Killer Milton and Fred Lewis tbaskctball ineludedi. These changes brought on maturity. but Bro, Albert didn't like dealing with babies. so Steve Taranto's cheek sure did get red. A sign that we were becoming a bigger part ofthe St. Mary's community was the purchasing of our school jack- cts. Much to our surprise. the sophomore class dance ti as very successful. But not all thc dancers thought so, Maybe Ralph, Tom, Sean. and Garnett will think twice about skipping to Ero-Ero-Erotic City at the next talent show. Among the other talented students, Garrett McCray was President, the Potluck Crew came into focus, and Allen and the other breakers almost got cast in Beat Street. Speaking of streets, look out for the chew on the sidewalk and the carpets in the A. V. room. YUKY Tony Collins amazed everyone, especially his biology class, with his awesome dis- sappearing act for the entire fourth quarter. Love that formaldehyde. As the junior year started, everyone was in high spirits, until the Santa Cruz Band Trip that almost wasn't tClinkl Clinklj. We welcomed Shag, finally beat Salesian twhat a coincidencelj, and beat up Piedmont. Thanks Br. Dan! Attention K-Mart Shoppers, on sale now, Bry- ant Reed's Blow Pops and Jason Kaneko's Cas- settesf' Thanks to the first junior yearbook editor, Alex, and their brand new moderator, Mr, Puck, we spent many a long nights trying to meet the dead- lines. Pat S. fighting for photos and Levi was driv- ing us crazy, Look at the Lights Our dance was a flop. but then we found out who really wanted to be a D.J. QOOH, Rock Me Bro. Danielj. Our class had a bit of cultural exchange, courtesty ofJuan's Place. Dos Equis Z Dos Deten- ciones. Bro. Dan and President Jonathan put together a Mc Wonderful prom in beautiful downtown Oak- land. People came Pretty in Pink. Josh Miller wore his best Converse, and Dennis and Tony pre- pared for Lake Merrit to flood. Aren't safety pins for diapers? Maybe notg they helped keep up Levi's dress. Don't Nobody Bring me No Bad News. But the bad news did come when we lost two of our best to D.L.S! Bye-bye Bro. Cecil tfrom the lips of babesj and Bro. Daniel tsnaplj. Mr. Harper came back! The Senior Class start- ed off making bucks ! The Senior Sweatshirt sold out after Orlando made everyone an offer they could not refuse. The Student Council got Jona- than Renty as President and ... oh. yes, Tim Doran as Vice-President, at least that was what the plaque says. ls that what you wanted Tim? The Panthers are strong and the student body is there right along side. There is a record turn out for activities this year: Student Government, Chorus, Football, Basketball, Track, Yearbook and The Spirit Committee. These arejust some ofthe ways that students are showing their support. 23 Live Jesus in our Hearts. 5 3 1 3 2 z A The Campus Ministry, under the direction of Mr. Hanecak, has offered our community the opportunity to display their Christian attri- butes. The masses in which we participate sig- nify our unity with Christ and with each other. We share our unity with communities outside St. Mary's through the Christian Involvement Program. We also experience the joy of the retreats which offer us a chance to be serious while having fun at the same time. We would like to thank Mr. Hanecak for his work and guidance, Bro. Michael for the music he brings to the massg and most importantly, to the student body for living it. 25 ,I I HGMECOMING ,87 fl J I I 27 The saga began on Sunday, October 9. The time is 6:30 pm and the Senior Council met in the library to inter- view the 14 candidates for Homecoming Queen. As the ladies from Holy Names and Presentation sat in the A.V. room watching White Knightsi' and Bye Bye Birdie , the Senior Council would call on each lady to be interviewed for the candidacy. In the back of the room the other ladies waited. The were photographed and entertained by Levi Garcia, Alex Tamayo, Kevin Begley and Mr. Puck. After 10:30 rolled everyone went home to prepare for the beginning of Spirit Week, everyone except Tim Barr, John Bianchiani and Br. Michael, who remained behind to count the ballots and pick the candidates for Homecoming Queen. Levi Gar- cia and Mr. Puck also meet to finish the written agenda for the rallies during the week. The signs, which were painted by members of the Senior Council and Spirit Committee, had to be hung in the Shea Center for the weeks activities. It was now midnight! Monday marked the beginning of Spirit Week! The first day was known as f'Mimic Monday . People came dressed like their favorite people. We had our share of Brothers and facultyg there were even those who ad- mired our cheerleaders. The Senior Class started sell- ing their Beware of the Panthers Homecoming but- tons. They were extremely popular. On Tuesday, Toga day hit. The outstanding Toga came from the Sopho- more class, Greg Iabobo out did everyone in his outfit. The other outstanding Toga was worn by Sister Bar- bara, who wore sandles and a sticker on her toe saying ga . Nice job, Sister! On Wednesday the students came WIERD! We had 28 everything from walking bushes to things that looked like pinball machines, and then there were those who just came as themselves. It was an interesting day for the school and the people who used their imaginations. Thursday was a day that most of the student body looked forward too. G.Q. day! Not only is it a chance to dress to the nines , but it was also the time for the student body to be introduced to the Homecoming Candidates. Each of the ladies gave a speech to the student body. We saw style and class in our candidates. We were also treated to The St. Mary's Band, who played, That's What Friends are For and the chorus singing, Through The Years. The solos performed by Allen Richardson and Joe McCullum were in top form. After the assembly, the candidates and the Senior es- corts were treated to a lunch in honor of the ladies. It was a busy and exciting day. Later that evening, mem- bers of the Spirit Committee met in the Gym to re- hearse for the next evenings night rally. Levi Garcia had a hard evening organizing his production. The evening was exciting, it was the first time we saw Kevin Lawson's incredible stage and light show come to life. Mr. Harper and a group of students were painting and hanging signs, while other members were working on their routines. The evening ended around midnight. Friday came and the school showed up in their true colors: RED! As the students gathered in the gym for the big volleyball game, Seniors against the Faculty, we all saw the spirit! The red was everywhere and the cheering was explosive. The volleyball game was excit- ing, with the faculty as the conquering winners. It was a nice conclusion to the week. It was also a nice opening for the Homecoming Game on Saturday. At 7:00 that evening, the Spirit Committee gathered for the opening announcements about the evenings program. At 7:30, the crowd began to enter the gym. By 8:00, the show began. We had exciting openings by members of the student body and the St. Mary's Cheerleaders. Then the entertainment began with The Combo Band, Jona- than Renty, John Gant, Ed Chan and Matt Van Der- Ende, and the lead singer Allen Richardson, opening up with Some Like It Hotf' We were entertained for a second time with the Combo playing, I Didn't Mean To Turn You On. The Candidates were escorted on stage while The St. Maryls Band played. One of the high point of the evening was when the Varsity Team burst into the gym. The team ran around the gym lining against the stage. Lead by Rod Plummer, the team turned to the candidates to take a bow. Such class! The team ended their bit by doing a Varsity rap. The final part ofthe rally came when the queen was picked. After Tim Barr presented a box to each of the ladies, they were instructed to open them to see who had the red rose. The lady with the red rose was pro- claimed Homecoming Queen. This year a representa- tive from Presentation won: .laviera Flores. The rally ended around 9:30. Everyone left except for Tim Barr, Orlando Frasca. Pat Spica, Jermery Barr and Mr. Puck. who stayed until 3:00 AM setting up for the dance. Pat and Tim swung from the rafters with red and white streamers in their hands as Orlando and Jermery swept and cleaned. lt was a long day! Saturday finally came and the Junior Varsity won a extremely exciting game. Although the Varsity team played hard, they were defeated by Encinal from Ala- meda. During half time. the queen's parade rolled around the track in red and white vehicles. John Bian- ehini did a greatjob organizing the events for that day. That evening was the Homecoming Dance and it was a huge success. At 11:00. a net of red and white balloons came down and covered the crowd with colors. lt was an exciting moment for Tim Barr and the Friday night workers who helped worked with the net and balloons for hours. The dance ended at midnight. The 1986 Homecoming was a great success. There was more spirit generated from our student body then in past years. Special thanks is given to the Senior Class Council and The Spirit Committee for their hard work and concentrated efforts. 30 . v ' A ffl!-Q.-vm 1-Q., 1 E i 'Q b . . .. 'R l -Lag img,- l we , W. It began with a record number of enrollment for the class, with even more wanting tojoin. Concerts were given in the Winter and Spring, as well as, a special invitation to sing at the Christmas Cermony at Greystone, the Christian Brothers Winery. We would like to thank Brother Michael and the chorus for their performances through out the year. They help give our assemblies an extra special touch. On December 14, 1986, Harold B. Murphy Hall, the new sciencefclassroom building on campus, was dedicated. Several hundred hearty souls braved the cold weather to clelbrate the opening of St. Mary's new, state-of-the-art building. Honored guest was Mrs. Harold B. Murhy, whose recently deceased husband Harold, Class of 1941, was the largest single benefactor to the building project. Her son Michael and his wife, Brenda, and their daughter, Boneeg daughter Lauree, her hus- band Thomas Trisler and their children, Robert, Darla and Jonathan also attended the ceremony. Mr. Murphy, who was looking forward to the dedi- cation of the building, suffered an untimely death just a week before the dedication was formerly scheduled. He died on September 14, 1986. Brother Norman Cook, FSC, Provincial of the Western Province of the Christian Brothers, ac- knowledged his pride in the completion of the facili- ty. Brother Norman was recognized by Principal Brother Michael Collins, FSC, as having had faith in what seemed an impossible dream, and allowing St. Mary's to proceed with building plans for Harold B. Murphy Hall. Both Brother Eugene Ward, FCS, and Brother Timothy Diener, FSC, have wings in the new build- ing named for them. Both Brothers are revered by former students, faculty and friends of St. Mary's. upper-right: Bro. Michael presenting an award to Mr. Davis above: Bro. Michael directing the chorus. right: Bro. Nick Smith, Aaron Senior 1987 The Class of 1987 had such an impressive Senior year that even our Principal, Brother Michael, de- cided that this year was the best year for him to graduate also. Those factors which contributed to our most impressive final year at Peralta Park began with a successful welcome to the class of 1990 by a senior class which completely assumed the exem- plary style of leadership. The events surrounding the Homecoming were satisfactory to all who par- ticipatedg however by throwing the volleyball game the seniors probably went further then they had to in their effort to make Homecoming enjoy- able for an obviously outclassed faculty team. An S.R.O. Talent Show said as much about the Musso- lini-like efficiency of Frasca and Bianchini as it did about our class' uncanny ability to attract the beau- tiful and fsomewhatj talented people. The Sir Frances Drake provided a perfect setting for a perfect evening as we, with our significant others, danced the night away. Graduation Can event we had all looked foreward to for so longj went by far too quickly. As it did so, however, we could not help but recall our four years journey together and how much better each of us had become because of Saint Mary's and one an- other. . 1 W ZW? Masonlj QThe following to be read with The Battle Hymn of the Republic playing in the background-J The Junior class arrived in September of 1986, in hopefully our nfinal forml' for the last 2 years of Saint Mary's. It was something of a struggle up to that point, as we tried to show our worth as the 125th graduating class, and the Junior year was to be the real test. So, the final verdict? Does a house fly? Does a picket fence? Have we done great or what?!? There's a lot of spirit and talent in this group, we've just got our own, sometimes not quite understandable, ways of expressing it. CThe follow- ing is to be read with Pee Wee Herman's theme, Tequila!,', playing in the background-J Relief! Hey Juniors! Just 2 more years of high school left. What's that? Junior year is supposed to be difficult? It's becoming to actually seem like school! Oh damn, letls just go home. We were told that when we returned from the summer, some of our classmates would jump ship. We didn't believe it until we stepped in those gates and saw it for ourselves. We got our locater cards and found out that we had to experice new things, the REAL academics: Biology, Geometry, and Computers. Still, with all this new stuff, we had our friends and the activities that make St. Mary's special. With the leader- ship of our moderator, Mr. Jeffry, and our class president for the second year, Pat O,Toole, and the class council: Dan McGann, Darren Banke, Wayne Franklin, Marcel Gillies, and Stuart Peyton, the Sophomore Class continued with all the spirit we had as freshmen. 70 ,fjfx Q 41 , 4 we 1a 'Wu T'! ff 'HS 'Q t,.,' X I-3. After a tough loss to San Rafael in their first game, the cubs came back strong and finished off with an impressive 6 and 2 record. One of the high points of our season was when we were playing Alhambra. They were winning 24 to 20, when we decided to get into action. During the final 6 minutes of the game, we scored 16 points, which took us to victory. The freshman success was the result of a lot of hard work and the terrific team work on the part of both coaches and players. Coaches Trusendi, Moore, Diondi, and Lawson not only taught football, but instilled in the cubs a sense of sportsmanship and pride, panther pride, that will last a lifetime. You are keenly aware of his presence physically, mentally and emotionally. You are aware of the 100 per cent that he gives to every program he has been a part of at Saint Mary's through the years: input of vocal power, high energy and heart. And so we dedicate the 1987 Peraltan to Mr. Richard Tru- sendi, who has given so much to us and to our school. Mr. Trusendi entered Saint Mary's in 1973, when he took on the school drafting program. He soon also became part of a biology department team with Mr. Colbert Davis and Brother Nicholas Biele, creating a team teaching experience that would go down in Saint Mary's history. The program continued to evolve, with new team members Mr. Edmund Balsdon, Mrs. Janet Hack, Mr. Ken Rafael and a former student of Mr. Trusendi's, Mr. Lawrence Puck, who was busy learning the ropes. Many a nervous sophomore experienced real growth - and nightmares! - in that program. Mr. Trusendi has also always been active in the St. Mary's physical education program and sports programs. ln football, he has been a dedicated head coach for all teams: varsity, junior varsity and frosh. Here another former student has come back to haunt him, Mr. Adolph Bertero began to work with him in coaching football. Mr. Trusendi has also been one ofthe Saint Mary's track coaches in recent years, and is presently assistant altheltic director. A lasting physical legacy of Mr. Trusendi's is the new Saint Mary's weight room and varsity locker room. Foreman Trusendi took a ce- ment square where students gathered to eat lunch, gathered together a group of supporters and workers, and in 1985 began the building project. The great new addition to the physical ed program was possi- ble through donations of time and money on his part and from the people who worked with him. Thank you, Mr. Trusendi, for the heart and soul you have dedicated to Saint Maryis. We dedicate this book to you. 134 fy? ,l-W., E f 2 asia? W' As Brother Michael prepares to move on St Mary s will not only be losing a friend but a man of determination He enriched us with the sound of music by forming our wonderful chorus We were honored to have one ofthe only all male high school choruses in the Bay Area. With the participation of close to l00 students, the St. Mary's Chorus dazzled many when they performed. Brother Michael was also a man of action. In l983, he promised that the Science building would be completed before his term as principal was over. ln l986, his promise was fulfilled. We now have the benefits of a true 'lstate ofthe art facility, Harold B. Murphy Hall. His involvement in development was one of the main factors in the growth and progress ofSt. Mary's Master Plan Program. He supports such fund-raising drives as the ever-popular Phone-a-thon, Car Club and Golf Tournament. These events brought together the supporters of St. Mary's to cele- brate the spirit and generosity they share. Another talent of Brother Michael's was his persuasive charm in helping a student overcome his fear of performing in public. He had Seniors singing and acting out the f'Twelve Days of Christmas. The students would participate in the talent show. They would sing at the Christmas and Spring concerts. They would lead the school in song during prayer services and help open celebrations for people outside the school community. He also encouraged students to become more in- volved with the Fine Arts program. He supported the band, drama, yearbook, photography and the art classes offered at school. His talents were not limited to the Fine Arts program. By bringing back the talents of Mr. Dan Shaugnessy to run our Varsity Football Team, he began to make changes in the Sports at St. Mary's. He also helped initiate the building of the new weight room. This was done by services donated by faculty, parents and friends of St. Mary's. Our athletic program is now as strong as ever. Brother Michael brought style to St. Mary's with the addition of the Mom Prom and the Senior Christmas Liturgy. These were times when parents and students could share the St. Mary's experience together. They were events that meant a great deal to the people most involved in St. Mary's. 148 Q? F. I I kgswf my 'K-. Another honor that St. Mary's received due to Brother Michael's help was the President's acknowledgement of st. Mary's College High School as Exemplary. We were chosen as one of 55 private schools in the country to receive this award. That was an incredible plus for St. Mary's. Principal, Senior Class moderator, Chorus Director, teacher, or friendg whatever 'Khat he wore, hc put his all into his work. His love and concern for St. Mary's and its people will always be remembered. We will always benefit from what he has given us. Thank you, Brother Michael. We hope you have as much success with your new school as you had with us. rother Michael 1 M f .mpc ? i -Q- x ,es -f .. nv ..,.. Goodbye W' Sister Barbara Saying good-bye is always difficult. It is even harder when the person who is leaving is such an integral part of your life. This page is dedicated to a woman who has been a huge part of our St. Mary's community. Her dedication and service to St. Mary's has been monu- mental. Sister Barbara joined St. Maryls in 1983. We were told that she was to be the new math teacher. Little did we know that her talents went far beyond math. She made significant contributions not only to the math department, but to the curriculum and scheduling, the faculty council and the track program. She has also faithfully supported programs for which she was not officially responsible, such as Campus Ministry, the sports program, the fine arts and counseling. We would like to thank Sister Barbara for her love and support. We all wish you well and know that wherever you choose to go, you will bring some of that same magic that we were lucky enough to have. 150 X.
