Not Mikehlosephg he was never a freshman, Anyway, this was the basic notion of the freshman year. We werent afraid of girls, and this showed by the success of the Ifrosh Mixer, where we danced to Beal I2 and Lfflft' Red Crmfelle. Big Brother Day was a smash, for we had lito. Michael Collins as our new principal. The 1982-85 season added to the faculty a Bro. Albert Villa- gomez and a Bro. Cecil-Charles Duncan. This Class of 1986, being ofa sound 150 students, proved very promis- ing. We were the 120th class to enroll. And promising we were. With Mr. Michael Walsh as coach, we Saint Mary's Cubs lost only two games during the football season. Being provoked bythe football team, SM Frosh basket- ball stormed through the CAL and tied the champion- ship. Athletic we were, but GQ, was first priority. Polo, Izod. But trying to look good in 55 degree weather isn't too smart. The junior retreats proved this as we frove. At the retreat house. where we reunited with Brother Brian. we learned that our friends were serious about life. To merely address society as one finds it, however, is only a beginning. More importantly, students must be prepared to bring to it a new vision, new expectations, new challenges, new ideas, and a new ability to transform our ordinary society into an extraordinary one which is more equitable, more safe, and more Christian. The realization of these goals requires programs which strive for the full growth of the person - spiritual, aesthetical, intellectual, and social - in addition to mastery of basic skills and preparaton for a life work. Ex- emplary components which address this goal at Saint Mary's include the following: .- 1. The Religious, Ethnic and Socio-Eco- nomic Diversity Among Both Students and Staff. All coo often, for example, racially diversi- fied student bodies rarely encounter comparable racially diversified adult role models in private schools. This is not the case at Saint Marys 2. The Participation of Over One-Half of Our Student Body in Our Elective Fine Arts Programs. Additionally, a quarter credit of art is required of all freshmen and sophomores. Elec- tives include Chorus, Beginning Band, Concert Band, jazz Band, Drama and Advanced Art. Un- der any circumstance, we consider this program to be exemplary. For a boy's school, however, it is even more significant and, we believe, an im- portant conrributer to the education of the whole man. 3. The 8-1 Program. The 8-1 Program is an effort at broadening the educational program at Saint Mary's while maintaining our traditional college preparatory curriculum. During special one week sessions in the fall and spring, each student has the opportunity to chose an area of learning of particular concern to him. The curriculum for each session is based on a combination of student and faculty interest and contains a mixture of academic, travel, career exploration and recreational classes. Some course offerings in the 8-1 Program have included the follwing: SAT Preparation, Photography, Theater in the Bay Area, Travel in Spain, Travel in Travel in Mexico, Travel in New York and Washing- ton, Skiing in Colorado, Backpacking, Bicycle Tour- ing, Survey of jazz, Black History, Career Internships, Basic Sailing, Museum and Park Tours, Driver's Train- . ing, Sports Medicine, Astronomy, Peer Counseling and ft - Film study. A - A ....,.,.-.. W t ,, 'A ...--1-'be N. 4. The Financial Commitment of the Christian Brothers' Province and Saint Mary's to Help Qualified Students In Need. The 1984-1985 subsidy from the Christian Brothers' Province was S216,000,00, which amounts to 3523.00 per student. Additionally, specifically needy students received 360,000.00 in aid during the present year, 5. The Master Plan. The Master Plan is our capital improvement blueprint for the future. Our current building program has been planned in phases. Phase One was our multi-purpose student center, Phase Two was the Brothers' residence, and Phase Three is a sci- encefclassroom facility for which we are currently rais- ing funds. Future building plans include a performing arts center, an additional classroom building, and a new library. 'lynn ll i 6.The BecomingGood News Program. Becoming Good News is a Christian Brothers program for faculty spirituality de- signed to aid us in reflecting personally and discerning corporately our mission as Chris- tian educators. The process begins with in- service days, Each has a specific theme, such as Our Identity as Religious Educators, Personal Commitment to a Faculty Spiritu- ality, and Supporting and Complementing the Religion Departments' Programs. 7. The Financial Support and Involve- ment of Parents, Alumni and Friends. There has been a 125116 increase in financial support to Saint Marys over the past three years. At the same time, participation of par- ents, alumni and friends in activities which benefit the school financially, has increased dramatically. The masses in which we all participate in reflect the unity we have with one another. The exposure to the community allows us to share our Christian values with others. This is one of the many assets ofthe Christian Involvement Program. Thanks to Br. Alexis for his Campus Ministry Program and Br. Cecil for organizing the litergies. We had 100'Hi participa- tion of the student body. Registration, which took place from October 8 through the 11, gave some interesting results: More peo- ple applied for College through Athletics , Scuba Diving , Campus is a Stage , and Fishing than was earlier expected. Also, new classes, such as Life Sport! , Culinary Academy , and Mr. Nakaharas Sea Urchins in Monterey marine biology trip, gained great acceptance. For off campus classes, for which 58176 of the student body were, the good weather greatly enhanced the exper- ience. During the week of October 27 through November 2, 8-1 week, special happenings occurred: with Br. Mr. An- derson and Mr. Borrelli added a twist to their fishing course by having a Deep Sea Fishing trip. The Dining Room consisted of seventeen scenes about family problems. Mr. Olivier said that the play was a hard play to do, but they did a great job. Dave Toda, a former drama member, came back to council them on understanding the roles and performing better. Mr. Raphael, the lst teacher to perform in an R.T.E. production, played quite convincingly his character of an old man. Many thanks must go to the technical crew who did a fantastic job. We would like especially to thank Mr. Olivier for his hard work and faith in us which helped all of us perform better. -W.: -. .-as--. 0.1-gy 4.04. -a .s-, .-.ma-. e.,,,1s,-. -as-. -. Our time has finally come and there is nothing we would rather be than Seniors. Even the loss of our Senior Lawn and parking lots cannot tarnish the sparkle of excitement this year holds. In response to our new status, we have risen to become the chief partici- pants in athletics, in chorus, in band, and in drama. We have bound together to make sure that our last year is definitely the most memorable. As we pause to remember those companions who have not made it this far and try to figure out what the future holds, we must say thank you, Thank you St. Mary's for these exciting four years, Thank you for the knowl- edge on which we can build our future, and Thank you for molding us into the men we have be- come. Ed Quinn 52 xv. vgk R hjk'Scnior Class President lid Quinn and Studcm Body President Troyuui Hicks, fx, , One More To Go! af im , I' X fl E l i f 4 ff The Class of 1987 has always shown promising talent and this year, as juniors, we used our resources to attain much success. The year started with much surprising effort as we came together to sponsor the second dance of the year, Octoberfest 85. Despite the sparse crowd, we somehow gained enough support to make a considerable profit and have a good time. That support, in which our class excells, reamined with us for the rest of the year. We are fortunate to posess individuals with the right attitudes and willingness to help make everything a success. Tim Doran, our class Vice- President, has always been around to make sure things were done right. The ideal of doing things right is shared by many others. Tim Barr, our Intramural Manager, should be commended for his reconstruction of the Intramural Program which provided class competitions that were enjoyable and worth participating in. Credit should also be given to Alex Tamayo for being the first junior Yearbook Editor. The Peraltan has received many needed changes. Being juniors has meant a lot to everyone and receiving our class rings symbolized it in a meaningful and everlasting way. Our unity was extended to our classmates at Holy Names through the junior Retreat, one of the most long-awaited events of the year. Much to our enjoyment it provided us with the opportunity to become closer to each other. This closeness provides for the benefit of all as we look forward to the junior Prom. We intend to hold it at the Lakeview Club atop the Kaiser Building in Oakland on the 28th floor. We will be embarking on a St. Mary's first by having dinner at the club preceeding the festivities. It is our hope that the evening will be our night of elegance. As the year comes to an end, we will have learned new things, shared many experiences, and grown in many ways. But before we take our final step and go on to be come Seniors it is rewarding to look back and remember the past. jonathan Renty. 54 ........ li X.: alvnmn' Digging for gold.
