This year we are featuring examples of their art rather than examples of them. Under the direction of IVIr. Julian Barnett the number of students in Photography and the quality of their work has increased from year to year. The Library regularly displays the wide variety of subjects that they study and we are happy to offer Five samples here. Clockwise, from the right, these pictures are by Tom Brady, Chris Dunlap, Ben Covington, Jim Brock and Brian Olivier. . .,,1.. when K Vxgzli Q lkyy mwfq 5 -....,,-Q S 1..F E,- f . Olivier, Tony Williams, Aaron Goods, Larry Frediani, Angelo Henderson, Vernon Jesuitas, and David Crawford. 47 Featured on these pages are several views of our highly successful and talented St Mary s Band Under the direction of IVlr Barrett these musicians representing all four classes were a regular part of our activities and were loudly involved at most of our home football and basketball games. The high points of their work for the 76-77 year were in the second semester when they first scored extremely well in the Reno Jazz competition and then played to a standing-room-only crowd for their annual Spring Concert. Outstanding seniors were Kevin Barrett, John Camozzi, Paul Gray and lVlark lVluldrow. From top left going clockwise, Frank Fisher at trumpet, The Chief directs the annual Spring Concert, On the Bus to Reno, Brad hugging his tuba, John is interviewed for Playboy magazine, and theJazz Band moves to the beat, QQ ll For the past few years the Nlass of the Holy Spirit, which commemorates the beginning of the school year, has been held on the lawn behind St. Joseph's Hall. Throughout the year there are a number of religious activities which involve, at one time or another, most of the student body. Masses are celebrated during the first week of school, on Jan. 15 in memory of Martin Luther King, on Founder's Day in lVlay and on all holidays of oblilation. Retreats varying in length from one to three days are participated in by a large percentage of the juniors and seniors and by all the freshmen. The Leadership Retreats held in San Rafael bring together potential student leaders from several Bay Area Catholic schools. They work intensively on development of skills and attitudes that will make them better able to serve their schools and themselves. PIRITUAL ACTIVITIES The pictures at left and below illustrate that the generally serious natu retreats is balanced with time for recreation and relaxation. f V ,Qt V ,. , i ,...e Ee re of student A .. .., . , -,iv .MeWfi'5'5'i? t :- ' 9 N. All proposals for action involving the student body or for utilization of student body funds must be discussed and decided upon by the Council. Dates for dances, suggestions for the Administration, development of new campus organizations-these are all topics of consideration during the year, The Council consists ofthe Student Body oflicers, the class presidents and the class representatives. Time and again he made hundreds of pictures of athletic events and campus activities available to us. Virtually all ofthe football and basketball action shots in this book are his work and represent many hours of developing and printing. In addition to the black and vvhite photography he provided to the Peraltan, Father O'Connor took many color snapshots at dances and games and, whey they were processed, he assembled them on display boards in the library. Part of the fun in any activity is being able to relive it in memory. Father O'Connor has provided all of us with many visual memories. We thank him. FATHER O'CONNOR fix inn,-. M-Q.. John Janeczko. In previous years St. lVlary's had had a variety of service andfor rally organizations but never one group that performed both functions so consistently and well. The Spirit Committee staged several student assemblies and ralliesg assisted in preparation for special eventsg established a first semester bowling Ieagueg provided class competition for a spirit trophyg and generally attempted to make the student body more aware of what was going on and how to get involved. Each member of the committee received a card that identined him as belonging to the group and made him, or her, eligible for various prize drawings during the year. Under the student leadership of Jim Nluyo the committee provided a genuine boost to campus morale and much is expected of them in 1977-1978. 113.61 v 51' '5M, r g: Y -f , sa Sill S S , - . ff m ' f ' Ill : , 39 , mail, -i if get W, V . Defense was featured in the victory over the Cougars and the St, Mary's unit was particularly strong. The outstanding play of the game was made by Ben Rodriguez who blocked what appeared to be a sure touchdown pass. In this and in the Piedmont game Sanders was a stand-out at linebacker. His exceptional play earned him a selection to the all-CAL team. The offense struggled for much ofthe year but was at its best while Woods was playing. The 1976 freshman football team lost two games before realizing they were the best team in the league. The shutout of Salesian paved the way for a four game win streak, highlighted by an impressive upset of previously undefeated De La Salle. Because the team had both depth and balance, virtually every player made an important contribution to the team's success. Indivuduals who merit special note include: on offense, quarterback Ralph Beachum, running backs Ron Elliott and Henry Strong, Hanker Don Ward, guard David Kelly, tackle Elton Baptiste, tight end DiCarlos Thomas, on defense, line backers Kevin Cullen and Steven Moore, middle guard Steve Manning, ends Tobben Brekke and Brian Mathis, and cornerback Scott Pearse, on special teams, Chris Larson, Ed Broussard, Kelvin Warren, and Jose Cuevas. Highlights of the season were a 12-0 Catholic Athletic League record including the round-robin championship and a second consecutive title in the Pinole Valley Tourney. Everyone on the team contributed to its success, notable examples being the following: Darrell lVlellion's 30 point effort against Salesian, Doug Nlurrey's line oftensive and defensive performances that earned all-tourney honors at Richmond and Pinole, Ed Hines' rebounding and scoring in the first Panther win at St. Joseph's, David Brown's season high of 23 points against lVlt.
