X ,Q I . x-- 1 Mr. Chavez Brother Kilion Mr Neuberger 'F'- By means of the excellent organization of its various branches, coupled with the capable leadership of competent student officers, the student government of St. Mary's High has been the salient impetus behind the success of the Golden Year -l959. Convening bi - monthly, the Student Council, which is perhaps the most influ- ential department of student government, considers problems and formulates poli- cies regarding the student body. Student Body President Jack Canario presides over the Student Council. Another branch of student government which has secured the respect of the stu- dent body and established itself as a forceful sustainer of school regulations is the Student Court. Composed of Judge Mike Kenney, Registrar Lloyd Rochon, and Secretary Mark O'Brien, the Student Court convenes on alternate Tuesdays. Two bail- iffs, Winston lng and James O'Neill, sum- mon the offenders, and a iury of one representative from each of the four di- visions ofthe high school body ascertains the guilt or innocence of those summoned. Penalties are imposed upon violators in proportion to their offenses. l ff' .- Ab. fr., 1 ' ' ' -f -SQ 55, QE ' , mmf Mu SQ..-In I an-n ff g Q Student Cou rt .17 N 'fi-'ns ' .0149 ' Y V. S+ 'f. This service group handles several campus duties, such as the main- tenance of order in the cafeteria and the supervision of study- halls. Each member is assigned to a specific task, and there are new assignments every two weeks. The newly-formed Traffic Commission, a branch of the'Circle S. A high school All- American football team, released yesterday, contained the name of St. Mary's High tackle Mickey Ording, among four Californians who made the 80-player mythi- cal squad. Ording was undoubtedly an outstanding linesman - possibly the best in the East Bay last fall - but we wonder how far his name would have reached without a big assist from fellow student Paul Gaddini, who runs a college-like sports publicity office at the Berkeley school. St. Mary's grid coach Dick Read credited Gaddini to a large extent for Ording's all-Northern California rating. We imagine Gaddini's tub-thumping crescendoed Or- ding's name into national prominence too. Gaddini is currently booming the Panthers' ace basket- baller Joe Weiss for All-American mention. His 22-page St. Mary's cage brochure Ithis is high school?l boasts one chapter entitled - Joe Weiss - All-American. Personally we'd like to nominate Gaddini for the All- American high school sports publicist team. More power to him and his staff. S 0. . ,R J 6 H- 4. fyvk v. b ny . f K .. On Oct. 3, the St. Mary's Panthers faced the Pleasant Hill Rams before a crowd of 3,000. The squad from Berkeley drew first blood as the ever-alert Rich Cabral pounced on a Pleasant Hill loose ball, and, after eight plays, Calvin Guillory plunged into the end zone. The kick for the extra point was wide. Late in the third quarter the Pleasant Hill offense began to move. And, despite some brilliant defen- sive play Qtlfthe part of Mike O'Connel and Mick Ording, the Ram gridders managed to 6 points. The crucial try for the extra point was no good the same. The rest of the game saw St. Tonk, dems wa 'for Mary's godscore, only to lose the ball on fumbles and Y pass a tlucfvown seemed certain. F October 24 found St. Mary's drawing a bye in league play and taking on a St. Elizabeth's team which had withdrawn from the C.A.l.. football division last year. The Mustangs, with Ernie Fazio repeatedly breaking away for long yardage, shocked an onlooking crowd by quickly scoring the first six points. Their PAT was good. lt was not until late in the second quarter that reserve QB Gordon Queen was able to make the Panther Offensive unit move. Taking over in Mustang territory, after a St. Elizabeth fourth down gamble failed, St. Mary's drove to the l yard line, and Queen sneaked in for the T.D. The PAT, however, was missed. With chargin' Calvin Guillory running wild on the gridiron and flashy Al Isola throwing pin-pointed passes to sterling end Carlos Pachao, the'Red and White scored three times before St. Elizabeth's could rally for a defense. ln the fourth period the Elizabethans came back and scored another seven points, but by then it was too late, Final Score: St. Mary's 25, St. Elizabeth's l4. On the following week, Saturday, Oct. 31, St. Mary's returned to league play against the ever powerful Serra Padres. lt was a wild offensive game. The first break for the Panthers came early in the game when guard Bob' Deasy recovered a Serra fumble, and, four plays later QB Al lsola went in fori W ng the score. The PAT was good. Not much later the Panthermen had the ball again, and, with a drive highlighted by a Calvin Guillory 45 yard gallop, raised their point total to l3. However, two rapid Serra touchdowns and two PATs, put the Padres in the lead. Fighting back furiously, St. Mary's managed to score on another Calvin Guillory 2 yard plunge, and again on a pass from QB Gordon Queen to Al Isola. ln the third quarter, showing amazing drive, the Padres regained the lead with l3 more points, but the Panthers came back with two more touchdowns and a PAT for the victory. The final score: St. Mary's 39, Serra 27. .,. fo' Q 'Now L-J' I if No. 49 - Carlos Pachao '29 -0 Homecoming Day found the Panthers opposing their C.A.L. arch-rival, the Riordan Crusaders. The San Franciscans soon found that the Berkeley squad was too hot to handle. Led by Calvin Guillory and Bobby Lopes, the St. Mary's offensive unit hum- bled their opponents time after time. Riordan tried to retaliate, but the husky Peraltan defensive line wouldn't budge. Jerry Sheehan and Jack Canario, a pair of immovable intetfipr linemen, stopped everything that came their way. Late in the second half, hqykesrer, the Crusaders took to the air and managed to recover for a total of 19 poii'ft's.,But, by that time, the gap was too much to overcome, and, as the game ended, the score read: St. Mary's 26, Riordan 19. WithiiaihV.,offense lacking its usual spark, and a defense having a bad day, ta teamsfrom Peralta Park went down to a crushing I9-0 defeat. However, Bob Deasy, Calvin Guillory, and Leon Burns proved to be shining stars in a night of dark- ness. Their excellent play indicated that the Panthers would be ready for the up- coining championship game. On Friday night, Nov. 14th, the St. Mary's Panthers from Berkeley faced the Bellarmine Bells of San .lose in the game which was to determine the C. A. L. cham- pion. Out-manned and out-weighed, but never out-spirited, the St, Mary's footballers battled their opponents for four grueling quarters - but to no avail. Bellarmine scored three times before the evening was over, while the Peraltan's only touchdown came on a Phil Deiro l yard plunge with one second remaining. As the gun sounded, St. Mary's found itself at the short end of a I9-6 score. They had lost the game, they had lost the championship, but they had nothing to be ashamed of. With a six win- one tied-two lost record, and a l7th place Northern California rating, the Panther football team had brought prestige and honor to St. Mary's! 44. --1:-11 ll' , ,W -0 ,. i, -I if M As. wi g.. , v .W i 1' ' I Mitac g ' ' ' f 9 4 Jw- I'Q I 2 '4 Mary' Mary' Mary' Mary' Mary' Mary' . . We can be reasonably sure, that the Jim Fraser-led team will im- prove the league record of 6-5 of last year. With cinch all-league Jim Fraser, veteran Ron Malast, southpaw Joe Akstin, and sensational Don Lavagetto doing most of the hurling, the Panther mound seems strong. Rich Cabral and Mike Ording will do most of the catching. Outfielders Al Isola and Phil Deiro and infielders Jim Sanders and sophs Mark Kraft and Steve Stamates will give the team plenty of balance and hitting strength.
