The Story In his first year as head baseball coach at St. Mary's Mr. Ernie Cecaci gave evidence that the baseball future for St. Mary's is bright. Handicapped byaprolonged basketball season that kept many ofhis key players away from practice, the team, nevertheless, opened the regular season in good shape and although they lost the first two games, both were well played and contested until the last out. Since the year- book had to go to press before mid-season, little can be said about the season record. Players who gave promise of distin- guishing themselves were, Richie Mason, a newcomer at catching, Frank McDermott, consistent hitter, J i m De Costa, strong pitcher, and George Sabatte, infield main- stay. That is what the seniors said at the close of the 1954 season, but Coach Bob Hagler surprised everyone with another great team, in fact, a team which many say was the greatest in a long line of great St. Mary's teams. But 1954-1955 will be remembered most of all because of four important events--winning the Catholic Athletic League Carnival, Catholic Athletic League Championship, the Acker Tournament, and placing second in the Tournament of Champions. Having a 31-3 record St, Mary's dominated League play and the East Bay. Erv Blue captured League scoring honors with Bob Dold and Joe Barry taking second and fourth respectively. All three made All -League, and George Korte was chosen on the A11-Star team at the Carnival. Fred Friedman, the fifth man was a ball hawk without compare and perhaps the greatest sopho- more to perform on a St. Mary's Varsity. Having romped through the Acker Tournament, the team reached its greatest height in the second game of the T.O. C. when they beat previously undefeated Richmond 50-48 in what was described by coaches present as the greatest game of high school basketball ever played in Northern California. The Story Because of inexperience and key inju- ries the Panthers stumbled off to a slow start by falling to Tctmalpais and Albany. They hit theirstride by beating Santa Rosa, Amador, and Marin Catholic in succes- sion. In the season's crucial the Panthers dropped a 6-O verdict to Serra, on a Faulty pitchout, which proved to be the downfall of the defending champs. The Panthers Failed to lose morale and came back to beatastrong Riordan team in a defensive battle, and then ended their season by shutting out St. Elizabeth's. The standouts for the season were hard to single out because of the all around balance of the team, The first string de- fense was unscored on in league play, and must be congratulated. Players selected on all-star teams were Mac Powell, Jim Curtin, and Wes Atkins. Dick Dold, Frank McDermott, and Curtin received the'Ath- lete of the Month awards. The coaches deserve creditfor molding the players in- to a smooth and spirited team, which was representative for St. Mary's High athletic standards. The students are most indebted to the Dads for their contributions to the yearbook, to the athletic department, and to the social program of St. Mary's. As the pictures on these pages illustrate, the Dads are a seIf-sacrific- ing bunch of fellows who believe in the gospel of hard work. After contributing well over S3000 to the extra-curricula activities of the students the Dads were still looking for new ways to help St. Mary's. As such it is a collection of pictures, a compendium of data and facts. Yet it is more than all this. In its pages the Yearbook portrays the spirit of a school, and the PeraItan--- the spirit of Saint Mary's. The portraits and the pictures of classes recall the friendswe have made. Faces and namesl These trigger the memories of HQ, generosity, and -nlcixlie E that characterize the men of Saint Mary's. And the faculty pagesl These spark in our mind the ioys and sorrows of learning, the labors of themes, the anxiety of tests. These same pages, too, recall the devotion and sacrifice of teachers spending themselves to make men of the boys of Saint Mary's. Even more than these, the pictures of the events and activities capture the spiritof our student body. Scenes of rosary devotions, of student body mass and communion vividly recall the intense loyalty for things eternal. Academic contests and social events, dramatic productions and school assemblies, clearly portray the interest and enthusiasm that mark the men of our school. And, finally, the athletic contests, the sweat and skill ofour players, the thrill of victory, the determination in defeat, stir again in our hearts the courage so marked in the teams of Saint Mary's . And so it is that a yearbook portrays the life and spirit of a school. So it is that the Peraltan portrays loyalty, enthusiasm, manliness and generosity ----- these are the SPIRIT OF SAINT MARY'S.
