Although a lot of people outside of the college community don ' t realize it, sometimes the pressure of higher education takes its toll. You need a break, you need to get out, you need to get away from the work (or the people) before you go crazy. You need to relax. Luckily, St. Mary ' s has a lot to offer in the area of relaxation, and sometimes just a walk around campus will bring you new life. If that isn ' t enough, there ' s always the waterfront, or a game of football, tossing a frisbee around, or maybe just crashing in front of the fireplace in lower Charles. And then there are al- ways the weekends, where five days of often intense work give way to 48 hours of near catatonia. So, however you do it, when the pressure is on, take a minute, collect your thoughts, and re- lax. — Forrest Fisanich Another room trashed after late-night party Enjoying the great outdoors Mike Mesko — Photo by Michelle Ballard Wide Open! Star date, January 29th, 1988. Approxi- mately 75 of the most prominent leaders on the St. Mary ' s College campus were called together for a creatively engineered leadership sym- posium, designed to help each student discover his or her leadership style and learn how to develop it to its fullest. The entire residence life staff was in anendance to impart their kernels of wisdom upon the students of the Star Fleet Academy , as the symposium was called in keeping with the Star Trek theme. After four hours of comeraderie and experimentation with leadership styles, the new graduates of the Academy were encouraged to u«e their knowledge to boldly go where no person has gone before and lead their generation in new and prosperous ways. Commanders Freeman and Cliff-Romano Uhh! Harder! morning, (he sun rises over the campus long before anyone on (he campus itself rises. A slight chill hung in the early morning air, but it warmed up quickly as (he sun shone down con(inuously (hrough nearly cloudless skies. This is (he begin- ning of a special day at SMC; the day of riverfest. Some people might call Riverfest a sort of homecoming, but homecomings are for the less fortunate schools that don ' t have a river, or a waterfront, or the right people to put the other two to g(x d use. At SMC, we have all of these things, and they, together with the sun, give us a chance to enjoy our- selves and spend time with old and new friends. — Forrestt Fisanich SMC luxury cruise Marriott table manners fD ft) C 5 Play ball! Essentials at St. Mary s Torchbearers or those involved io a theatrical production, nothing is more . ' satisfying than the sounds of an energetic, enthusiastic audi- ence. The cast and crew of the Torchbearers , the second tnainstage production from first semester, enjoyed just that. The months of preparation paid off io a show that entertained and delighted audiences for it ' s entire four-day run. Director Michael Tolaydo, technical director Tom Clark, stage manager Pete Garvey, and a support staff of thousands pro- duced a hilarious show that among its high points, included Man Mattingly as a cynical Fred Riner, and Jeaonie Smith as Fred ' s ditzy wife. Dan Cavanaugh turned in a great performance as Huxley Hossefrosse, the suave and debonaire leading man, while Maureen McCarthy played the haughty J. Duro Pampanelli with vim and vigor. Outstanding performances were also turned in by Dorri O ' Brien as the whimsical Nelly Fell and Tracy Vilson as the beautiful yet over-dramatic Florence McCricket. The rest of the cast and crew worked to make sure that the reputation of St. Mary ' s theatre remained intact in an amusing and entertaining way. Student productions Whtre do actors go when ihe mainsiage production has a limited, all female cast? To the White room, of course. That was the situation early second semester. The problem was solved by directors Brent Burgess and Bryan Garey when they successfully produced two shows, Line and Zoo Story . Line, by Israel Horowitz was a show about five peo- ple standing in line, manipulating each other for first place in the line. The five person cast featured Scoti Nielson as Flemming, a simple man with simple values; Thane Steilow as Stephan, a warped genius; Tracy Wil- son as Molly, a rather promiscuous woman; Michael Mesko as Dolan, a maniuplative asshole; and Andrew Duthie as Arnall, Molly ' s browbeaten husband. Bryan ' s show, the well-know-n Zoo Story by Ed- ward Albee is a show about two men and the dialogue they have sitting on a park bench. John Worley turned in an inspiring performance as the slightly deranged Jerry, and Drew Kahl ' s portrayal of the mild-mannered Peter made the evening special. Regardless of the complaints of lack of seating and high temperature, the shows were enjoyed by all, exhibiting some of St. Mary ' s finest acting talent. k ' ' - B ' HJ I r - ' B ' ■ ' K ' : V 1- ' W e Wwm The final production of 1988 Much Ado About Nothing Dan ' s vengeful, nasty alter ego.
