MARY ' S COLLEGE OF MARYLAND founded J«39 ff 16 When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, a college freshman once said, a senior. Four years later, that freshman was finally a St. Mary ' s College senior. What went into being able to walk across the stage? -surviving 8 frisbee golf weekends -numerous afternoons spent on the water instead of in class -unexpected swimming lessons in St. John ' s Pond -forgetting to set the alarm clock -sleeping through the alarm clock -mastering the fine art of essay B.S. -sunny afternoons on the point -dropping classes at the last minute -muddling through a new alcohol policy -meeting challenges -last minute typing -waiting in line for fine dining room cuisine -late night munchie runs to Poor Boys -listening to monotone instructors -The Green Door -and even a little bit of studying I wonder what he wants to be when he grows up. We ' re sharing a double and what have we got? Two stereos, two popcorn poppers — what have we not? A carpet, a frige, a turntable . . . alot! Thirty people on a hall sharing their lives, and the only way to escape are the Green Door type dives. Too many people, two showers, one phone, shouts of turn down the music! . Leave me alone! Problems arise, but there are many good times, too. Party in Sin City; they ' re a motley crew. All the halls are quiet, where ' s everyone gone? The dance, the farmhouse, or out on the lawn . . . possibly on the beach, maybe in town, perhaps on a windsurfer trying not to fall down. The time will go by while friendships become strong. One day we will graduate (after so long). We ' ll leave the dorm life, but wherever we roam, we can remember St. Mary ' s College as our home. Susu. Well, look around you, participate, get involved — before you graduate! Academics are important, keep those grade high. With many students at St. Mary ' s its just anough to get by! Baseball, Lacrosse, Soccer and Basketball too. Some varsity, some intramural, some club, some do it all. This year the dances were many and the parties surely weren ' t few. We had beach bums, jocks, pimps and pros . . . Where were you? The movies, plays, and concerts were tops. Officer and a Gentleman, 48 Hrs. lolanthe. Brass- band and Skip Castro. Did you go sailing? I hope you watched your head. Look out don ' t fall . . . Looks like you got wet! Thursday night was party night — where else but at the Green Door . . . shoot a game of pool, do a few shooters and leave before you hit the floor. The first annual Olympics, Oh, what a success, even with our share of cuts and bruises, everyone turned out and did there best. Once again another year comes to an end . . . get involved-before you graduate . . . Where will you be next year? Lisa and Penny Theatre Performances The theater department this year did a grand job with the performances they presented to the college. The spectacular lolanthe and She Stoops to Conquer were the major concentra- tions of its time. The Childrens Theatre did the Crab , The Dance Company is doing Dance through the Ages and a guest actor presented the life and times of Edgar Allan Poe, in Rem- berances . All in all, everyone was busy with performances and stage construction for these major plays. MARK COLE as EDGAR ALLAN POE 52 53 Maryland Day 54 Maryland Day ' 84 was the cele- bration of the 350th anniversary of the landing of the Ark and Dove on St. Clements Island. This year ' s celebration was very wet and rainy, but the weather did not dampen too many spirits. The anniversary events brought together many peo- ple from the state legislature, the college and local communities, as well as a large number of tourists. Music (M lri llW 56 H mt L ' V ' K K i 1 Concerts Concerts are always a good time — alot of work and effort, but alot of fun. The concert schedule this year was filled with a variety of en- tertainment. The Fine Arts Com- mittee brought the Brass Band to SMC for an evening of slapstick musical entertainment. Sweet Hon- ey and the Rock livened up the tent at the waterfront with their original style. The SGA Concert Committee put together a fall concert with the band Blotto. The Mighty Invaders and The Skip Castro Band rocked SMC during the spring semester. 59 Dances Dances are popular events at St. Mary ' s; there is usually a dance ev- ery weekend. This year saw many different theme dances which are turning into annual events. Some of these are: the Suitcase Party, the Halloween Dance; Pimp and Pro Night, and the Dorchester Beach Party. The favorite band at dances in 83-84 was the Diversions, and the favorite DJ was SMC ' s very own Gary Rice. 60 61 62 63 64 Honors Convocation The annual Honors Convoca- tion at Saint Mary ' s is a chance for the outstanding students and faculty to be noticed and con- gratulated. The cream of the crop is not the only special group around Saint Mary ' s but they sure do work hard. 65 66 67 Favorite SMC Pastimes ■flpJll 68 0 ,r 69 Monte Carlo 70 Spring Fair 71 72 Xi,.; W.. St. Mary ' s welcomed a new athletic director, Dr. John Harvey, whose new deas brought about a fresh look to the sports program. St. Mary ' s said good-bye to the black and gold Saints, and through a campus and alumni vote, ushered in the new era of the royal blue, gold and white Seahawks. Two new club teams were added to the roster for 83-84: women ' s soccer and women ' s Softball. In addition, a new athletic confer- ence was initiated by SMC: The Chesapeake Women ' s Athletic Confer- ence. These were well deserved improvements to the women ' s athletic scene. SMC developed another recreational program which excited the entire campus. ST. MARY ' S COLLEGE OLYMPICS drew faculty, staff and students together in controlled athletic competition. Events included ten- nis, track and field, bike races, swimming, basketball, and much more. It was the first program of its kind at SMC. The athletic program at St. Mary ' s is based on the belief that a student, regardless of athletic ability, can and should be able to compete at any level. Although All-American athletes have been produced in lacrosse and sailing, each varsity team at St. Mary ' s has a spot for the less talented— the students who want to learn a skill or sport. Mike gained his inspiration from Signor Neira and learned the art of fencing from Doug Wright, Paul Richards, Pat Wood, Scott Stock- well, and Kevin Gleason — all of whom he thanks. During the 1983 season, the Saints played 5 games against other club teams in the region. 91 INTRAMURALS 92 : ' Intramurals f  % , I J J4 Intramural bports are an im- portant part of the athletic pro- grams at many colleges through- out the country, and St. Mary ' s is no exception. The intramural pro- gram covers a wide variety of athletic events including: Flag Football, Indoor Soccer, Ulti- mate Frisbee, Innertube Water Polo, Co-Ed Weight Lifting, Vol- leyball, Indoor Lacrosse, and Basketball.
