. % % St, Mary ' s College of Maryland Volume 3, 1981 A New Day Begins Another buzz of the alarm and a new day had begun. The thought of staying in bed tempted me but the burden of knowing that work must be done wouldn ' t let me rest. I finally dragged myself from underneath the covers and crawled out of bed. Automatically, I reached for my towel and shower needs and headed for the bathroom. The visions of a nice long hot shower made me almost glad I got up. It was quickly shattered when I saw three people already waiting for the showers and heard the talk of no hot water. After a ten minute wait, a shower was finally open. No time now for a liesurely shower, I had to hurry so I wouldn ' t be late for my 8:30 class. With hair dryers blowing and clothes flying, I thought I was making good progress, but the clock informed me that I only had five minutes to get to class. Racing down the hall and out the door. 1 ran all the way to class with a minute to spare. After catching my breath, the professor walked in with a grin on his face that could only mean one thing — a POP QUIZ. Oh no! I knew I should have done my chemistry problems last night. At long last, the quiz was over and the hour long lecture began. Finally, class was over and my stomach was informing me that I had missed breakfast. Gosh, I wish it was time for lunch but Economics awaited me. It was the same supply and demand curve we had talked about last week with a few new ideas thrown in. Finally, lunch!! Standing in line, I checked every jean pocket searching for my meal ticket. (Don ' t tell me I forgot it!) Relief. It was in my right hip pocket. I systematically moved through the line wondering which I should eat - grilled ham and cheese or pizza and french fries maybe both. There was no need to hurry through lunch, as my next class wasn ' t until 3:10. Walking back to the dorm I ran into some friends playing frisbee golf. I hurried back to my room and grabbed my frisbee with thoughts of a fun-filled afternoon. For the next two hours frisbees flew everywhere. Teeing off from behind Calvert, I remembered that I had History at 3:10. It was 3:00 now. That was the end of my fun. I trudged up the stairs of Calvert wishing that I could keep on playing. To my surprise, the professor had a guest speaker who proved to be very enjoyable and interesting. With all my classes over, I headed over to the Student Union for dinner. I was not alone in this endeavor, for there was a long line waiting to get in. Dinner was the same, old usual thing. After dinner, I walked back to my room thinking about what I should do now. I decided to go to the library to do some much needed studying. I gathered all my books and materials and slowly walked o ver. Walking into the library, I saw my hallmates sitting at a table, but I knew that I should sit in a quiet, secluded corner by myself if I was to get any work done. After three hours of diligent studying I packed up my books and headed back to the dorm. As I walked onto the hall, the aroma of pop- corn greeted me. Following my nose, I soon discovered the popcorn and my friends two doors down. While munching out, we talked about everything from classes to friends to the weekend. Before I knew it, it was midnight. Time to hit the sack only to awake a few hours later to another buzz of the alarm. IT- ■£ SMC...A World of Its Own (F EL As one drives south on Route 5, one can easily miss our small liberal arts college. Once, however, St. Mary ' s has been found it cannot be forgotten. The beauty here catches the eye of everyone. Along Route 5 we have our waterfront. The river invites windsurfers, sailors, and swimmers into its calm. Heading up the hill is the Garden of Remembrance, Church Point and our re- constructed State House; not to mention the sturdy Calvert, Kent, and Anne Arundel Halls. Even our buildings hold beauty. The beauty of St. Mary ' s is not limited to the scenic surroundings - we find beauty in our student body and faculty as well. At our school one can feel free to express himself. Individuality is a must. One may lose himself in a crowd and quietly observe the diversity of people and activities or join in and become a member. And there are activities! One can throw a frisbee across campus, study peacefully under a shady tree, or just sit chatting with friends. We may be a small college but our hearts and potentials are large! In Search of the Mighty GPA There is a basic goal for each student at Saint Mary ' s - - to graduate. For some this is not so easy. We must not only attend classes but study, frequent the library, and cram for that all im- portant final exam. We do whatever we have to in search of that mighty GPA. One of the outstanding majors offered here is that of Biology. The environment is conducive to this field of study, with the St. Mary ' s River, the pond, and the swamp, Peepersburg. It is usually the Biology majors seen wading hip- deep in the marsh for specimens. Biology, how- ever, is only one of the many areas of study. Others include: Social Science, English, Natural Science, English, History and Art. Being a liberal arts college, St. Mary ' s students are required to take courses in practically every area of study. Thus, the classes have a variety of students. Because the school is such a convenient size, one may get to know just about every student on campus. The small class size eliminates anomosity between teachers and students. The teachers are easily accessible, and many times are seen socializing with the students. Once away from the classroom and the books, St. Mary ' s offers students a wide variety of fun and activities. Remember the S.G.A. sponsored activities: dances, Sunday night movies, con- certs The Nighthawkes, Face Dancer, and Crack the Sky. Sports events, intramurals — football, basket- ball, volleyball, softball, indoor soccer and lacrosse. Windsurfing and sailing, attending Saturday afternoon lacrosse games, basketball. Remember Spring Fair Weekend, Almost Anything Goes, Christmas Caroling, Monte Carlo Night, Christmas and Spring Formals, Q.A. ' s Crush Party and, of course, Frisbee Golf, 10 Do You Remember? a ■ (i i - ' (in ■ [ -v a favorite of just about everyone. Remember the intellectual stimulants: speakers and lecturers - Noam Chomsky. Senator Prox- mire, Betty Williams. Robert Paul Wolfe. Lt. General Dickenson, just to name a few. The Russian Art Exhibit. Student Art. theater pro- ductions, dance concerts and fine art shows. Remember dorm life - friends and neighbors, popcorn, popcorn and more popcorn, studying in the study, shaving cream and water balloon battles, watching soap operas, and partying with friends. But, most of all, remember the good times, the ups and the downs, the friends. 11 QUEEN ANNE FIRST RIGHT - Third Row: Michele Farren, Nancy Elwood, Sandi Gilbert, Carole Sharpe, Grace Gess- wein.
