European Superiors were consulted Heaven was stormed and St Mary s Academy became a reality The first Sisters Mother Kostka Sister Math1lda and Sister Catherine arrived in O Neill on April Z0 1900 and lived in a private home until the Convent was built The first classes were held in the Church choir and in the City Hall the roller rink The Convent built by Brother Stander SJ and local labor was ready for occupancy in October 1900 Sisters Alcantra Crescentia Laurentia Sophie Geralda Antoinette and Arseniajoined the pioneers and the classes took possessionin November Solemn dedication ceremonies were held on December 12 1900 these were attended by re presentatives of every religious group in O Neill and by teachers and pupils of the public school OnChr1s1:mas Eve 1900 the Angelus bell the gift of Mrs Nellie Dailey Gallagher was rung for the first tirne then Brother Stander returned to St Francis Mission with the assurance of a Job well done Very soon ecclesiastical superiors expressed their admiration for the work St Mary s had begun so well and the parishioners were gratifiedwith the success of the Sisters At an early date too the State Department of Education gave unqualified approval to the work Then in 1903 St Mary s sent out her first seven graduates This nucleus of Christian womanhood has grown to one thousand sixteen graduates. Boys have been accepted for high school studies since 1925. Some 75 of the students who have been taught at St. Mary's have consecrated their lives to God. Their names can be recorded, not all of their pictures were attainable for this book, Twice St. Mary's has found it necessary to expand its facilities. ln July 1910, the large new academy wing was begun, and was ready for occupancy in September, 1911. The new St. Patrick Church, under construction at the same time, was dedicated on October 19, 19l0.A later annex to St. Mary's,built in 1928, serves as living quarters for the Sisters. Growth is continual, though not always marked by added construction. St. Mary's, as it stands today, is a monument to the zeal and enthusiasm of the Right Reverend Monsignor Cassidy, to the unstinted generosity of the people of o'Nei11, as well as to the unselfish labors of Mother Leopoldine, Mother Kostka, Mother Leonie, Mother Mathilda, Mother Justine, Mother Alphonse, Mother Jerome, Mother Claver, Mother Cherubim, Mother Virginia, Mother Elma, Mother lmmaculata, and Mother Boniface, who followed each other in that order, and contributed to the best of their power to the development of St. Mary's. .-, .-. .-, ,-, .-. . , J . . .,. .,. ,,. .,, .,. ,j. .,c .Qc The corridors ring with the echoes of fifty years: childish footsteps and children's laughter, the rhythm of typewriters, the hum of spelling drills, vocal exercises, piano practice, pep club cheers, the noisy tread of high school boys, the rhythmic step of dancing classes, play practice, exclamations of praise over art exhibits, or Hail, Hail, our Alrna Materl' The walls re-echo with these memories. St. Mary's holds to her heart the children of past and present. May they always think lovingly of her, and may all of them fulfill her expectations for them in time and in eternity. 72 nw gf F sl!
