'igielgupia igmwr ,?v1II81'iuU,Q23EHE May 25, 1948 I greet St. mary's Academy on the com- pletion of another successful scholastic year and congratulate the Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish and the Sisters of the Incarnate Word for the splendid progress with which the Acad- emy is being blessed. At the same time I heartily commend their devotion to the cause of Christian education which is contributing so much to the building and maintaining of the Faith in the city of Amarillo. I congratulate the High School gradu- ates of the Class of 1948, as well as all who have successfully passed the courses leading to an advanced year. I wish to thank all who have in any way assisted the Academy during the past year? and I deeply appreciate the efforts of those who share with me the conviction that the fa- cilities for a good Christian education should be of the highest consideration in planning the future of our Church in this city. I bestow my blessing to all who have been associated in the achievements of the Academy during the year now ending with grad- uation. Devotedly yours in Christ, ,QQQM Bishop of Amarillo. ow K . M. , of St. Mary's university of Sun Antonio, opened the students' retreat at St, Mary's Academy. The exercises began every day with Holy Mflss in which the retreatants re- ceived Holy Comrnunion. Conferences, Medi1ati0U5, Rosary, and the Way of the Cross were on the scheduled program which was closed every day by Bene- diction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The periods not taken up with the retreat exercises were devoted to the private interviews of the students with the retreat master. The students of St. Mary's will not soon forget their retreat, of 1948 nor the retreat master, Father W. R. This little chick is very well known around old S. M. A. She needs no in- troduction to the students and very little can be added to the honor given her in being elected our school favorite. Her flashing smile, quick wit, and just plain ole bounce will be sorely missed here at the Alma Mater. She was responsible for the success of many projects and will be one of the greatest assets any progressive college could have. Our best wishes Celia, and don't forget us. .IACCUELINE ROBERTS- Senior Vice President, President of Choral Club, Sodality, Vice President of Athletic Association. This senior has been running Red Skelton a close race with off-the-record remarks for the past three and a half years. She's our home town comedienne and her dry wit has sent many a hearty roar up to the rafters of St. Mary's. She's clever, and talented. She tells everyone exactly what she thinks without a qualm. When she laughs it's low but full of meaning. She's wonderful and we hate to part with her- 4, VIRGINIA MCMINN- Senior Class Secreatary, Art Editor of Sunbeam, Choral Club, Sodality. Better known to us as Ginger -isvery much what her nickname implies, plenty spicy-especially in personality-capable of defending herself and others if the occasion arises. She prefers History to 'Math any day of the week and. thinks Betty Davis is wonderful. She is the artist of the Senior Class, and possesses a remarkable memory-particularly for license numbers. Here's luck to one of our most talented seniors. NANCY BROWDER- Senior Class Treasurer, Business Manager of Sunbeam, Winner of Radio Speech Contest, Choral Club, Sodality. Y Brown, eyed, quick tempered Nancy, lively and full of fun has been with us for 10 C groan I years. Fond of horses and cowboy boots she adds a truly Western atmosphere to our Senior Class. But Nancy is much more than this. Intelligent and aggressive, she is a true lover'of democracy as evidenced U by her winning essay in the Voice of Demorcracy contest here in the city. E Nancy is a devoted friend, a lover of books, dancing, and good shows. Her plans for the future include college I I.W.C. Our Judy --pages could be written on her, none doing her justice. To sum up our Sodality Prefect is difficult. She is our most level-headed, and efficient young senior. She's ambitious and has the drive to fulfill her many future plans. She refuses to say anything about anyone if it isn't nice and true. She's our sweet Judy-our energetic and hard working Judy. We will never know another to compare with her winning personality, or her unselfishness. We just want you to remember one thing Judy-we're going to miss you. MARION ENGELBRECHT - l9-18 Varsity Captain, Secretary of Choral Club, Honor Student Sunbeam Reporter, Sod-ility. Introducing Basketball Captain and star player!!! 'lo her we owe many' victories and to ln.-r also, we :night add, yo our thanks for nunit-rous lessons in sportsrnan- ship and It-am work. Marion joined us during our Eighth Grade year and became a true S.ivi.A. girl the saute year. Her plans include college and more Basketball. She likes good inovies, dancing, and animals of all descriptions- She is also one of our outstanding students-she niakes the St. Nla1'y's honor roll at least eight nionths out of the nine in the school year. And that, :ny friends is quite an average! We wish you luck, Nlarion, Basketball and all!!! CANA JO WIL.l..BURN- Sunbeam Reporter, Senior Cheer Leader, Attendant to Price Foothall Qlll't'l'l, Choral Club, Sodality. This pert little cutie joined our class mid-way in our Junior year. From the moment of her entrance she was a coniplete success-just as she always is. Her disarniing smile and friendly brown eyes easily put roost self-conscious stranger at case. She's an interesting conversationalist and proves it without invitation-since she loves to talk. She's a true friend but is sonietimes guilty of forniing snap decisions which she never regrets. When proven wrong, she admits defeat rapidly but when she's right the-re's no two ways. We feel lucky in having known you, Cana, even for a short year and a half. 3 , . Q -.1 , L, t il if it 'til tl POTENTLAL TWITTERPATED VERSATILE RESERVED ROSEMARIE ACKFELD- Sunbeam Reporter, Choral Club A Our quiet and thoughtful member-she entered St. Mary's September . of '47 and from that time on was a mainstay in our class. Appearing outwardly so quiet and calm, we are sometimes astounded by a sudden burst of energy or a sudden explosion of anger over some thoughtlessness of another. She likes to read and is one of those rare creatures who never seems to be idle or given to wasting time. Truly a good example for the rest of us. Her voice is soft and rarely raised above her normal pitch. She hates to think she ever disturbs anyone and takes great pains to avoid confusion. We think she is wonderful and we wish her all the luck in the world!! JEANNINE MCWHORTER- Co-Chairman of Sodality Social Committee, Sunbeam Typist, Choral Club Jeannie to you-our blue-eyed blonde entered our class in 1943 when we were a notorious Eighth Grade I and I mean notorious! J She has struggled with us and we think she really belonged with us from the very beginning. She is a very good dancer and the possessor of a lovely voice. Jeannie loves parties and is as happy giving them as attending them. She wants to spend some time of her life in Colorado-and if that's what she wants we think she should have it. Good luck Jeannie, and pleasant journey!!! KATHLEEN HERRMANN- Sunbeam Gossip Editor, Bach Club, Choral Club Senior Recital, Sodality Kathleen, know as Katie here at school, has been with us from the beginning all the way up to the end of our arduous climb. She is our pet soprano and professes a deep interest in dramatics. She loves to dance and act in plays. Katie is spoiled, but not too bad, she has a temper one profits by avoiding when it's burning but she forgives and forgets quickly. We have loved her these twelve years and will miss her. Next year she plans to attend Loretto Heights, in Colorado. We wish you luck, Katie. IDA KUHLES- Vice President of the Spanish Club, Bach Club, Choral Club, Sodality Ikie joined our class in 1945, our Sopohmore year, and has been a close comrade of ours ever since. She isterribly sentimental over small Scotty dogs and can get more excited over a dance than anyone I know. She likes movies and, check this, has no particular favorite star! Come graduation, she will either go to work or enter business college-her plans are slightly indefinite at this point. We have enjoyed her friendship for I these three years and we are looking forward to continuing this friendship for many years to come. Good luck, Ida, and don't forget us! FRIENDLY VIGOROUS ,aw ir l .- DREAMER PETITE LLELA MARIE HEY- Sunbeam Reporter, Choral Club Our Colorado protege joined us in September of our Senior year. She is blonde and the owner of piercing green eyes, that seem to ob- serve much more than they reveal. She is extremely fond of pretty clothes as is proved by a look at her extensive wardrobe. She likes boating but can't swirn, what a combination! She also likes horse back riding and dancing. We have drawn the conclusion that we have a versatile and truly lovable American girl in this our Lela. Don't forget us and our best wishes for your future. X VIRGINIA OAKLEY- Senior Class Favorite, Sunbeam Reporter, Choral Club Virginia, known as .lackye to us, joined our class in our Junior year. This little gal became a hit with us overnight, her bubbling personality and blonde hair caught on quick and we soon found that if ever we needed to depend on someone for a job well-done, Jackye was our gal. She always came through with what she promised and for this we're grateful. We also want to thank her for giving our class a new life and vigor with her continuous chatter and wit. She wants to attend college and stay single for some years. I-lere's our hearty thanks to you, Jackye and best whishes for your future.. MARIE FUNK- Senior Recital, Attendant to Price Football Queen, Price Cheer- leader, Sunbeam Reporter, Choral Club, Varsity Our Mi -another of our twelve year scholars- is one of our star athletes outstanding in both basketball and softball. She is also Our Dreamer , when those green eyes begin to mist and then fasten on some point quite distant, you might as well forget the question you wanted to ask her- she doesn't even know you exist! During her twelve years here she has been the cause of some unfor- gettable incidents, yet she fights only for what she considers right. We believe in her and whatever she turns to after graduation, we know she will make it a success. Our best wishes go with you! BETTY ROSE HANDLEY- Co-Captain of the Class Basketball Team, Sunbeam Typist, Choral Club, Sodality This petite little item has been familiar with the halls of S. M. A. for twelve straight years, and we know we would never have made Graduation Day without her. Our Bets has been the best friend in need we can think of and one of our hardest little workers. She has helped run up many a score in a hard and fast basketball battle and though small, believe me she knows how to duck, dodge and shoot with the best of them. She has a sweet soprano voice and proved it in our renowned Minstrel show. We are certainly going to miss this ray of sunshine, and hope next year, but Betty, we will not forget you! Arriving from Denver she enrolled at S.M.A. and from the first day we loved her. She entered wholeheartedly into our work, our joys, and our sorrows. She is a rabid sports fan, her only lament being the fact that Amarillo has no facilities for ice-skating! She likes dances and parties and fun in general. lf ever there was a girl who knew how to enjoy life- Mary is that girl. She would like to go to college, at any rate we know she will be a big hit whatever she does. We have enjoyed your friendship and hate to part with you, but hex-e's Good Luck!!! BETTY HERMAN- Choral Club, Sodality Presenting our latest addition-one Betty Herman- well known from our Freshman year. Betty left us that year for Chicago, fhorrors!l but between semesters she came back to join us in our Senior year. We find she is the same lovable girl- the same wise-Cracking, always joking Betty that we once knew, and we are very glad of it. She likes to dance and play basketball- pity the opposing team- and has a very good voice. She wants to attend college, preferably Stevens. Suddenly she slips on a banana peel and slides, not too gracefully, down to the C'0ncrete below, in her moment of distress, who should appear but JUDY DELGADILLO faithful companion of her school days, now the famous tight-rope walker. Somewhat abashed, Betty finds herself gently helped into the spacious building, where to their surprise they come face to face with--the co- owner CELIA SAUNDERSQ After the howdies have been exchanged, the business Manager, JACKIE ROBERTS, appears announcing the completion of her new in- vention, THE ATOMIC SEEING EYE, now ready for use. Upon Judy's suggestion to ascertain what the other member of the class '48 are doing, she proudly and efficiently works the complicated machinery and 1o!!-- on the screen appears Sister David, formerly MARIE FUNK, the expert teacher of a bored Bookkeeping class. As Jackie presses the button we see Jeannine in an exclusive cafe -----F----- washing dishes, flt looks like she got her wish!!J But whom do we now see? Why, it's none other than JACKIE OAKLEY beautifully curling her little daughter's BLONDE hair. The next-one togreet us is NANCY, the charming, well-preserved matron' of the home for aged ladies. My! Dosn't CANA JO still look pretty! and look, Robert Mitchum is bestowing the Acadeny Award for her performance in THE LOVES OF LIZA. In that giant sky-scraper, in New York we spy GINGER artistically illustrating roBob --- MARY GRIFFlN'S latest comic strip. A determined push of the button discloses IDA speeding fas usual, in her newest Neusch Cab. Nervously fingering the script of the Opera Carmen in which she stars, KATIE is directing her to the Metropolitan Opera House. A very familiar scene is now thrown on the screen. Indeed, it's Cathedral Hall. And from the cheers, it is very evident. that the UNDEFEATED team of SAINT MARY'S has just won another game thanks to the efficiency of the now internationally known coach, MARION ENGELBRECHT. The next screen flash shows us the Boston Institute of Technology, where ROSE MARIE holds the office of ..... headhjanitor. We are out in the country now, where we see LELA MARIE checking eggs for market from her spacious chicken farm. Who would have thought it--Lela, playing nursemaid to cackling chickens! Now, there is little Betty Rose who has become an. ardent church-goer: her study of architecture has taken her to practically every church in the world. The scene is new focused on WICHITA, KANSAS. We peep in at a certain private studio to behold MARGIE busily drawing mustaches and sideburns on her latest portrait of Just Plain Sam, the People's Man. As this last scene fades, Betty, glancing at her watch, with a gasp of astonishement, announces that she is already late for her modeling appointment. After hasty good-byes, Judy and Betty reluctantly take leave of their old school mates, not, however, without the promise of another class meeting in the near future through the use of Jackie's MAGIC EYE. Cathedral Hall, where the prom was held, looked like something from a book thanks to much work by Juniors of the two schools who began early in the year working and raising funds for the prom. The decorations defy description, but were done most skillfully with the aid of a decorator. Typical May colors ---- pink, pale green and white were used to form beautiful fluttery curtains at the windows, and decorated identical booths at either side of the floor-one for the Hugo Loewenstern band and one for the punch service. Vari-colored ballons decorated ceiling lights and floor baskets of spring flowers at vantage points thoughout the hall. The stage was really a picture, covered with artificial grass and bearing baskets of flowers, white wrought iron garden furniture and a matching arch, through which each girl and her escort were presented. As always at such an occasion a note of sadness was present, but the youngsters soon dispelled that with the magic of music and dancing. t' The Amarillo Times ? is-4 up 4 + 1,4 mf ' Wa ML' I vu 1 .11 1.
