Text from Pages 1 - 124 of the 1952 volume:

Published by the Senior Class St. Mary’s Academy Champlain, New York tea tion The 1952 SESAME will recall to students, alumni, and friends of Saint Mary’s the twenty-nine years of loving service Mother Mecthilde gave our school and community. Arriving in Champlain in 1910, four years after the founding of St. Mery’s, Sister Mecthilde will be remembered as music teacher and choir director until 1918. In 1920, she returned as superior. It is in this capacity that she spent twenty-three years of her religious life,_ from 1920 to 194-3, with the exception of two years, directing, guiding, and administering most efficiently both the convent and the academy. During the summer of 1949 Sister Mecthilde was named Provincial of the new American Province for the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. And in the summer of 1951 a Golden Jubilee celebration proclaimed very highly the merits of fifty golden years of service in God’s vineyard. It is with deep admiration and sincere gratitude that we, the Seniors of 1952, dedicate our yearbook to M3THER MECHTILDE PASTOR Rev. A. Desrosiers A devoted and understanding guide and Father ASSISTANT Rev. H. McCasland Our sincere gratitude for Father's forgetfulness of self and untiring efforts to give us a sound r li- gious training Way down In 1943, we little third graders met a teacher whom we can never forget. It so happened that Sr. Rose Angelina taught our class three consecutive years, and the teacher-student ties then formed have only grown stronger with the years. Her sincere piety and zeal for the good of each one permeated all her teaching. Thanks, Sister, our gratitude for your loving devotion toward each one of us will live always ! Soon we will be leaving St. Mary's as students. We will miss our school because it was like a second home, and it will always hold a very special place in our hearts. To Sr. Mary Amelia, our Princi- pal, we are grateful for the historical and mathematical knowledge she so patiently passed on to us. In times of distress, we always she so patiently passed on to us. In times of distress, w e always admired how her quiet disposition pacified our naturally exuberant natures. We wish to express our appreciation to Sr. Marie Odile for her guidance, patience and interest during the two years she was our class advisor. We will always remember her straightforwardness and her unfailing...photographic ability. We are also very thankful to Sr. Robert for the self-sacrificing effort she put into the directing of the Senior Play...and for introducing the Table Tennis Tournament. To Sister Superior, and all the other Sisters—surely not for- getting our Glee Club teacher, Sr. Lawrence—who were interested in our achievements and success, we say very sincerely, though sadly Thank You. These people know the river is there and yet they do not really know. If suddenly the river were to reverse its course, only then would they actually notice it. I know that somewhere this willow-bordered stream is darting into nooks and crannies, playfully tugging at the moss and weeds that grow there hanging over its brim. Somewhere it is talking its bubbly talk to the little woodland folk that comes to refresh itself at its edge and is embracing the vari-colored fish that swim within its bosom. I have known this river in its ever-changing moods. It can be friendly as it envelopes me in its soothing folds of liquidity. It can look treacherous and menacing when it has broken up into an irregular line of broken, jagged mass of ice. I remember one year when it reached the highest point of its wrath. The broken ice jammed, and the river rose higher and higher until it overflowed its banks. It swelled into the streets and even broke into the stores and houses in its path. It was the worst flood the town had ever seen. Although it can be cold and unfriendly, it has a familiar attrac- tion for me which I cannot explain. I like to meditate on its boundless wisdom and age. It existed so very long ago this same river I gaze upon everyday. It knew explorers that I do not know. It knew a different scenery and woodland folk that I do not know, and perhaps it was deeper and wider than it is now, but I will never know because it will never deign to tell me. As it sometimes goes on its bubbling, merry way, it laughs at my lack of knowledge. And at other times it grumbles at my stupidity and threatens me as it goes on its menacing journey. I wonder where it goes, and where it comes from, and why it groans and why it laughs, but I will never know and neither will the multitude of people who pass it every day ever know. This river is the Great Chazy River that I can never fully know for its secrets are kept Inviolate. Jean Filion, '52 Loretta Coache, Treasurer Agnes Brown, Secretary Aurianne Bechard, President Audrey Babbie, Vice President On a Saturday morning in the year 1962, a woman was reading her newspaper. She stopped abruptly as an article in the paper caught her attention. She must clip this, she thought, and post it in the album she kept. This album contained many such clippings recording the accom- plishments of the 1952 graduating class of St. Mary's Academy. With glad smiles playing about her mouth the lady searched each of the arti- cles over reminiscently as she had done so many times before. This is what she read: We witnessed an odd phenomenon this afternoon. A young lady named Loretta Coache opened a garage a week ago. Today we realized it was not only owned but operated by Miss Coache. She was acting as a garage mechanic, grease monkey, and car washer all in one, and believe it or not, business was fine. The Ayrshire that took first prize at the county fair this year be- longed to Gerald Boire, owner of a huge cattle ranch in Texas. Mr. Boire has been raising prize winners for several years now. Claire Bedard has taken a trip to see her sailor husband. She has given up her job and is taking on the full time job of Sailor's wife which includes visiting many ports, with home port seldom being on the schedule. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have made another capture. Lead- ing the men to victory was Sergeant Maurice Guerin whose name is becom- ing quite as renowned as that of Sergeant Preston. Agnes Brown has taken the position of customs inspector at the Blackpool custom house. By the way you may have read some of the books she writes as a hobby. One has made the best seller list. June Goven, the wife of a prominent agriculturer has made another successful appearance as a promising young singing star. She is also an actress in her own right. Following in the footsteps of her sisters, Aurianne Bechard has oc- cupied a position in a Washington office for quite some time now. Un- like her sisters though, she married her boss who's a doctor. George Hinerth that famous young comedian of stage and screen is referred to by the critics as a second Jerry Lewis. His latest triumph is a movie called Everyone Beware. Friends have been congratulating Bernadette Guay on her recent pro- motion. It is quite a feat for a woman yet in her twenties to become manager of a chain store. She is happy with her success and can now afford to drive a blue car of her own. James Barbeau after leaving a very brilliant naval career, has en- tered upon an equally great career as a T. V. Villain. His most suc- cessful act is entitled What is it? Eleanor Chevalier just arrived home this week from her trip to Atlantic City. Now she is back, she is marrying her soldier boyfriend. The journey to Atlantic City was to purchase her trouseau. After traveling almost around the continent, Ellen Murray has come back to Montreal to resume her duties as nurse. At present she has ac- cepted the case of a wealthy banker. Marie Tatro won the pie baking contest at the most talked-about pie bake that the town has yet seen. With all her culinary abilities it is naturally assumed that she keeps her husband well fed and he isn't complaining. Audrey Babbie became the wife of her childhood idol today in an im- pressive wedding ceremony. The bride and groom are planning to make Lake Placid their home. Helen Lafountaine has arrived in New York to become private secre- tary to one of the country's foremost doctors. She is quoted as having said, This is the closest I ever came to my original plan of becoming a nurse. Jean Filion after graduating from the Sorbonne School of Arts, has produced a very outstanding painting called Horses, not unlike Rosa Bonheur's. It is now on exhibition at the Metropolitan Art Gallery. The September of '48 found thirty curious and slightly scared Freshies expectantly watching the Seniors for signs of Initiation. After Initiation had come and gone, we were smugly satisfied that we had proved to be good sports and were now a part of that elevated society, known as High School. Sr. Jeanne of the Rosary was class advisor. Our class officers for the year were: President, J un e Goven; Vice President, Mary Lou Prevost; Secretary, Jean Filion; and Treasurer, Helen Lafontaine. We also demonstrated our social abilities that year by giving a very weird Hallowe'en party which was enjoyed by all. Four of our classmates, George Hinerth, June Goven, James Barbeau, and Louis Glaude took part in the play SURE AS YOU'RE BORN which won first place in the C.C.I.L. Play Contest. George made his oratorical debut in the Speaking Contest by cupping second place with the selection ONE HOSS SHAY. The following year there were just 19 Sophomores enrolled. Our teacher was Sr. Maurice who was recalled to Colebrook in February leaving the Sophs very bewildered by the absence of a homeroom teacher. Our class officers were: President, Mary Lou Prevost; Vice President, Bernadette Guay; Secretary, June Goven; Treasurer, Helen Lafontaine. Some of us came up in the Sodality world. Helen was chosen Prefect and several of ua were committee chairmen. The approach of Christmas caused a flurry of activity and excitement be- cause our class was in charge of the annual High School Christmas Party. St. Mary's won first place in the speaking contest by George's rendition of Casey at the Bat. All 14 Juniors considered that year just 100 t perfect. Sister Marie Odile was class advisor, and the class officers were Helen La- fontaine as President, George Hinerth as Vice President, Jean Filion as Secretary, and June Goven as Treasurer. Many of our class meet- ings were spent in planning activities to raise money for our Senior trip. We had a Junior Dance and the traditional Junior Day. At Eas- ter Gisele Trepanier was unable to return to SMA because of the ill- ness of her mother. Two others, Mary Lou and Jacqueline Coulombe en- tered the Senior Class. In April of the same year, James Barbeau, a classmate from kindergarten days, was seriously injured in an automo- bile accident, and was unable to return to school for two months. That June our class Journeyed to Howe Caverns with Father McCasland to see something that only God could have planned made. At last we were Seniors J And the year promised to be a very pleasant one when we discovered that Sr. Marie Odile was to be with us again as class advisor. The class elected Aurianne Bechard Presi- dent, Audrey Babbie Vice-President, Agnes Brown Secretary, and Loretta Coache Treasurer. The first thing on our agenda for the year was Initiation. Our class trip to New York and Washington came next. A very successful food sale was held at Adrian's Engraving Shop. A Spiritual Retreat was scheduled for October under the guidance of Father Adrian. It is doubtful that anyone who really made that retreat will ever forget those three days of silence, deep thought, closer communion with God, and the charm and sincerity of Father Adrian. In November misfortune again knocked at our door. Bernadette Guay suffered a compound frac- ture of the right leg. We missed her in 1 our activities. F e b- ruary brought along a Senior Dance and a 3-Act Play entitled The Tower Room Mystery, directed by Sr. Robert. Again George received the first place plaque in the Speaking Contest, the Basketball team was second in the League, and Luncheon for Six took second place in the one-act play contest. Five of the six players were Seniors. Class Night, Graduation, and our trip to Washington will crown these four years of work, prayer, and play. Now we truly realise that in ourselves, our future lies. HELEN IAFOONTAINE AGNES BROWN Still waters that run deep... a field of yellow buttercups... realist with a faraway look. The Class of 53 was greeted by Sister Robert, the new Junior Teacher. We soon became acquainted with her, for she was very under- standing and kind. Three heavenly days of spiritual retreat, under the direction of Father Adrian, were held in October. Soon the election of cheerleaders followed for the basketball season was at hand. Claire Lafountaine, Pearl Lafountaine, Florence Filion, and Rita Gregoire were named from the Junior Class. During the glittering months of November and December there was great excitement upon receipt of rings, that is, class rings. In January, Sister Robert started the rehearsal of the Senior Play, in which four Juniors had roles, Pearl Lafountaine, Rita Gregoire, Maurice Bedard, and Adrian Feeteau. Who sold the most tickets for this famous TOWER ROOM MYSTERY? THE JUNIORS February brought headaches, class meetings, hustling and bustling which paved the way to a very successful Junior Day, while March brought the All Star Game with Henry Gooley and Walton Patrie playing on the All Star Team, Claire lafountaine as SMA cheerleader, and Florence Filion as baton twirler. Besides, the Juniors kept the lead in attending daily Mass. Crowning these many moments of spiritual and material happiness, is our class trip which will live within our memories for nany years to come. At the outset we were convinced that we were green. The Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors claimed that a menacing cloud hovered over us. After the first few weeks had passed, and all were well acquainted with each other, election of officers took place. As the weeks progressed we found ourselves in the midst of initia- tion, speaking contest, basketball games, WEAV programs, and, of course, examinations. The Freshmen took part in all school activities and some even made outstanding contributions to them. A beautiful tenor voice was discovered in Laura Mae Coulomb©. Patricia Favreau and Jeannine Fecteau have shown promising oratorical ability, while Bernard’s part in the Senior Play was a credit to his class. Jeannette Castine, Jeannine Fecteau, Rena Kimball, Agatha Matott, Reginald Lafountaine and Raymond Monnette usually appeared on the Honor Roll. Bernard LaForest, Raymond, and Philip Dupee were members of the Junior Varsity while Jeannine and Marie Theresa La Vole were on the girl’s basketball team.
