When the students returned to school in September, they were surprised to learn that their coach Joseph Olbrys had been inducted into the Naval Reserve. This left the school without a coach and with no prospects of one. Father Devan scoured the North country and finally found a man capable of filling the position, Mr. George Welcher of Massena who had starred in football and baseball there. .Mr. Welcher arrived at St. Mary's Academy around Sep- tember 28 and immediately called the football players to re- port for practice. His call was answered by ten veterans of last year's team and by eleven new-corners. Due to the war gas rationing, we could schedule only one game. St. john's of Plattsburgh carried off the honors: I3-0. St. Mary's starting line-up was: Ends: Bill Ferguson, Hector Doe Tackles: Bill McNally, Paul Dupre Guards: Bert Authier, Robert Doe Center: Don Harradine. Backfield: Quarterback: Tom Seymour Halfbacks: Ross Jermano, Bob Laventure Full-back: .loc Rish V Manager: Dick Penfield
