www .5 1942-1943 On September the Sth the Class of 1945 bravely trooped on the floor for the first quar- ter of their second encounter with its worthy opponent-Success. Just preceding the game came the selection of the starting team from a large number of able candidates. These in- cluded our Class Teacher at center, Carmen Milia and Peggy Bowes guards, with Pat Mc- Nally and Tom Hannan filling the forward berths. Our first attempt to score worked nicely when with plenty of team work we scored a very successful hit, our first Soph dance. Also with the help of our able support- ers, with the sharp shooting of our mothers we almost scored again, but we were hindered by foul weather. At the close of the first quar- ter with brilliant teamwork from our class- mates, Gordon Mitchell and Joan Scarlett, we scored for the third time during the first quar- ter when they held the high SD0tS OD NOVGIH' ber Honor Roll. The second quarter found the class of '45 prepared for a hard fight. This quarter .pre- sented many chances to score and many times we did score. Constance Paquin, Marie Shunk, Floyd Boulia, Joyce O'Brien and Donald Brouse entered the Book Week Poster Con- test held by the school. While our small bat- tle was going on, War was also hitting many decisive and vulnerable spots. Our supporters took part in activities for defense to boost our 'score yet higher. We closed our second quar- ter with a very beautiful score when Joan Scarlett assisted 'by Betty 0'Hare, Dave Holden, Elaine Rishe, Carmen Milia and Tom Hannah headed the list of our January Honor Roll. After the half, our team returned to the scene of the Same with renewed vigor and de- termination to conquer. A very outstanding moment in our third quarter took place when with the support of our rooters we scored twice, finst ln a very successful raffle which enabled us to have an elaborate Class Party on February 4th, Following up this scoring spree came another when because of our gen- erous classmates we were able to ransom nine pagan babies, five girls and four boys, from their pitiful state of helplessness. The second team for basketball included Walt Pir- ie, Dave Holden, Larry Powers, Carmen Milia, Leonard Knable, Francis Austin, Leo Degone, and Tom Hannan. The boys up to date have played eight games winning five and losing three which puts them in the tie for first place for the intramural championship. The girls also played winning two and losing five very close ones. Their team includes Theresa Doe, Peggy Bowes, Mary Jane MacDougall, Evelyn Nesky, Nancy Laffin, Kay Ashley and Joyce O'Brien. Also during this quarter two free shots were made good by Peggy Bowes and Donald Brouse as Marcella and Tony in the play Sing a Song of Sixteen . At this time a new supporter, Elsie Gaddor, joined us. The fourth quarter found us putting them ln as regularly as in the three preceding quar- ters. We scored beautifully when we pledged our loyalty and support to St. Mary's Acad- emy. The team and its supporters wish to thank all who helped to coach us in the diffi- cult game of the Sophomore Year. lt won't 'seem long until we shall come back for a re- turn game with that ever powerful team of Success, to strive again to attain, as in 1943. the successful scoring punch and stamina which was shown by all members and sup- porters of our ever glorying Class of 1945. TOM HANNAN S 4:7044 Since we are involved in this present world conflict lt is no more than right that we should put in a section of what our class has been doing for National and Civilian Defense. Those boys and girls who own war stamps or war bonds are 1 Marie Amo, Cecelia Rivers, Joan Sharland, Mary Carmen Murphy, Kath- erine Ashley, Mary Dodge, Patricia McNally, Jean LaMacchia, Margaret Bowes. Patricia Deserre, Elizabeth 0'Hare, Jeanne Sovie, Theresa Doe, Laura Van Cise, Theresa Wil- liams, Robert Ryan, Robert Rolfe, Thomas Hannan, Carmela Milia. Dayton Connors, Lawrence Powers, Joseph LeBeau, Leonard Knable and Ronald MacDonald. For Civilian Defense some of the boys and girls have volunteered to do various kinds of work. Those engaged ln first aid work ,are: Gordon Mitchell, Donald Brouse, Floyd Boul- la, Francis Austin, Mary Carmen Murphy and Katherine Ashley. Theresa Williams and-Ellz- abeth O'Hare belong to the Junior Red Cross. Laura Van Cise and Mary Carmen Murphy vol- unteered as messengers during blackouts. Aid- lng in the flight command are Jean LaMac- chla, Patricia Deserrc, Katherine Ashley, Pa- tricia McNally, Margaret Bowes and Mary Jane MacDougall. These girls watch for planes at the look-out on the roof of the Hep- burn Hospital. Dayton Connors and Joseph LeBeau are stretcher bearers and Charles Amo is an air raid warden. Richard Penfield is making model airplanes. Besides this, sev- eral boys volunteered to work on farms last summer. They are: Joseph LeBeau, Thomas Hannah, Walter Pirie, John Tomlinson, Donald Brouse, Leonard Knable and Robert Rolfe. For the scrap drive Raymond Fritz, Pe- ter Rufa, Leonard Knable, John Tomlin-son, Floyd Boulia, Francis Austin, James O'Neil, John Bergeron, Donald Brouse, Walter Pirie, David Holden, Lawrence Powers, Joseph Le- Beau, Charles Amo, George Crowder, Daniel Kennedy, and Carmela Milia collected scrap. All of these Sophomores have shown them- selves eager to help their country, and we hope that they will keep up the fine spirit. Since training in Democracy is essential to future citizens of the post-war world, this year at St. Mary's we have inaugurated a new type of government based on the idea of a President and his Cabinet. Judges and Assistant-Judges were chosen to help the penalties against law- breaking student to be more easily decided. Each class has four representatives in the Student Council. The Sophomores chose as representatives Jean LaMacchia, Elizabeth O'Hare, Thomas Hannan and David Holden. Mary Moulton, Mary Jane MacDouga1l, John Dufore and Robert Rolfe are the Sophomore policemen. The Class of '45 has promised to uphold the Student Government in its work and to cooperate with it in establishing law and or- der within the -school. JOAN SCARLETT
