Farewell! dear class of Forty-three, ln years to come by friendship's bond We'll still united be. Although life's journey takes us far On land or distant sea, ln memory, dear S. M. A. We'll e'er be close to thee. The lessons that since childhood we have learned, The golden friendships we have made, The midnight oil we've burned, The disappointments bravely borne, The honors fairly earned, The plays we've loved so well to act, Will fill our Memory Book. No more we'll group in dear ST. MARY'S halls, Nor shall our voices mingle there Within its friendly walls. Whate'er our lot in life may be, Where e'er our duty calls, We pray that God may bless and guide Our Class of Forty-Three. Margaret Carroll 1 4-' . f' - ' ' 'V -. ' ' . E V This year, as every American knows, the cry has been to share Share everything you have. And so, tonight, we want to share with you the happiness that we feel in having you present with us. It is gratifying to be able to welcome so many familiar face . But this ls not something new. For twelve years you par- ents, teachers and friends have gathered here to give us encouragement in all that we have undertaken. To our parents we wish to extend a very special greeting. Your wisdom chose this Catholic School for us in the firm belief that our religion ,would be more necessary in our future lives than even algebra or science. This conviction has not proven wrong, for as we stand on the threshold of a new road, how much better and stronger we feel, armed with Om Dare to be different. Let us not leave be- hind wihh other forgotten memories of our school days, the true meaning of our challeng- ing motto. Being different does not merely mean doing the opposite of what others are do- ing, but seeking to imitate someone higher and ndbler than anyone on this earth. This One, Who, because He differed greatly from the ways of men, was scorned by many in His day, has set forth an exam-ple for us to follow. Daring to be different takes high courage. Have we the courage to perform our daily duties with diligence and fidelity? To display fairness in play and earnestness in work car- ing llttle for what our neighbors say? Do we shows :burning desire to improve: to do bigger and better things: to live up to the ideals of our Catholic faith, the standards set by our a. staunch weapon of Catholic training that will be our sure means of victory in the fight ahead. To old friends and new, and to our teachers, we express our delight in having you with us on this eventtul evening. Through your teach- ings, advice, guidance friendship, and even scoldfings, our four short years at St. Mary's have been both profitable and pleasurable. Yes, each and everyone of us greets each and everyone of you with gladness of heart at having -achieved our first goal. In thankfulness and appreciation we therefore wish to give you in our program tonight, a summary of the ac- tivities ot our four years in high school. Elizabeth Needle '43 Master? His fearlessness toward His enemies should 'be ours: His readiness to forgive those who injured I-Ilmg His staunch support of right, though the world was against Him: His ready assistance for the needy should also be our attitude in this day. We dare to be Different. Let us not then in worldly quest, Rush after pleasure like the rest, But keep our thoughts on du-ty bent And seek ln this our sweet content. Thus shall We be shackle free Bound to no enemy, But soldiers of the King of Kings Striving for Him to do great things. Margaret LeBeau 2 Remember the day, sixteen, seventeen, or was it eighteen years ago, dear, parents when the Class of 1943 had just received! its first official recognition- a Birth Certificate? I wonder what was in your mind then, mother? dad? You must have planned, - oh -- a thousand' things for us - the Class of 1943. How have we fulfilled these plans? Let us see. Rememlber the day you took us by the hand and enrolled us in the first grade. It was that seine year too, remember, that most of us received our First Holy Communion. How happy we were that day! Time really flew by, though, dtidn't it? Do you re- member how proud we were the day we climbed up- stairs to the fifth graldeg then on to sixth, and Con- firmation. Remember how we actually studied then, until we knew our Catechism from cover to cover, for fear the Bishop mmht catch us on any question. Remember the certificates we so triumphantly displayed in seventh grade, after we had solemnly pledged ourselves to be loyal Knights and Hand- maids of the Blessed Sacrament Remember the day we made our initial visit in fear and trembling to the Study Hall for our first Regents examination. Remember the .September Day in 19138 that found us exuberant ofver promotion to the eighth grade, that fbe-st remembered of all grades! At least we were in the Academy, so near to the High School. Who of us does not recall the hours we spent in the hall that year for misbehavior? What memories does not September, 1939, bring before you, Classmates? After eight long years of anticipation We were actually the Freshman of St. Ma.ry's Academy. Remember our initiation! Wfhal sights the worthy. Seniors made of us! How we laughed most of all when Coach Connors took charge of the initiation of those very distinguished class- mates of ours: Professor Lipp, and' our new Princi- pal, Father Devan. The supper, served after the pro- gram of stu-nts, proved that the Seniors were very friendly enemies. Remember our first High School election of Class Officers: President - Euclid Marieag Vice-President - Elizalbeth Needle: Secretary - Alice Lun-dermang Treasurer - Joseph Bernier. Maroon and White be- came our Class Colors: Dare to be Different , our motto. Then we were ready for the evening of our first Class party. Remember the new dresses, suits, and TIES: formal table manners: dancingg and- DISH WASHING? Do you recall the day of our Fresh.ma.n picnic at Pleasant Lake when Katherine Taylor fell into the water, and Father Devan's team beat Father Coseo's at baseball? Remember - how can we ever forget the jolly new studaents who joined us in our Sophomore and Junior years? The Class officers elected in Septem- ber, 1'940, remained our choice for the last three years, except for Bert Authier who refused the nom- ination in 194-1. Thus, President, Rovbert Doe: Vice- Presddent, Clara Seguin: Secretary, Betty Hannang and Treasurer, William McNally directed the num- erous social activities of these crowded, happy years. Rememfber the candy sales, raffles, dances, parties, picnics: the rallies, basketball games class teams: z'4eDaq and the' plays that broke the monotony of study and gave wings to our high school years. Remember that crowning of High School life: our Junior Prom. Re- member the scrubbing, the cutting of paper till our hands were sore, the measuring, pasting, climbing, tacking and retackingw when streamers stretched or fell: the fear lest those beautiful red, wihite and blue streamers come down on the heads of the dancers, as they did one night on the workers. Remember the second big event of orur junior yearg the brealkfast in honor of the departing Seniors. Although we worried whether there would be enough to eat, and whether we would forget our speeches, we smiled happily over the conrplianents of the Seniors. Our Senior year saw us seated in the coveted back seats of the .Sturdy Hall, but what dismay was ours to find that these longed-for places of honor put us very much in the lime-light. What perfection was expected of the Seniors! Remembering our own initiation, we naturally planned one just as fitting for the spirited group of 1946. They really seemed to have as much fun as we. Our Class basketball season proved a triumphant one for both 'boys and girls. Seniors, too, took leads in the annual school play. But above all we shall re- member the hard work of our editor-in-chief and! h-is companions on the school paper staff. Thelma's drawings contributed greatly to the popularity of the paper. Although the press room was the scene of many heated arguments ,these were soon forgotten his laugh that helped to cement the bonds of friend- s ip. Remember also the arguments Tony and Mar- garet used to have in History C classes. We enjoyed them more than any history lesson. Realizing fully the work connected Wirth a. Prom, We Seniors greatly appreciated the splendid one given in our honor this year by the Juniors. ' Mild all the excitement of preparation for gradu- ation we paused for the annual Senior Retreat. This gave us a chance to look at the more serious- side of life. The excellent sermons of our Retreat Master helped us realize the faults and mistakes of our school life. We can't claim that we were satisfied with ourselves, abut We feel that the meditations on the life of Christ and the reverence with which we received Htm in Holy Communion have given us new hope and strength to tackle the greater struggle that awaits us after graduation. This is one of our last gatherings of the memfbers of the Class of '43, but we hesitate to say Farewell to all our friends and especially to those wwho have befriended and guided us along the road of school life. Graduation - just what does this mean to us? It is approa.ching faster than we care to realize. Now that it is upon us, we hesitate because we see before us the war-torn world that we must help. But not for long do we pause, for we understand that God will guide us through this crisis and give us the grace necessary for each battle we encounter until we obtain a just and lasting peace. Because this is the age of alr transportation, we drive to the airport in our new transparent auto, which, by the way, was made at the new Ford plant where Joe Taylor and Gerald McGrath are the most efficient workers. A1'riving at the airport, we take the new plane which can stop on a dime and will fold its wings automatically, thus saving space. We are greeted by the friendly smile of Bert Authier who i now manager of the great Ogdensburg-Flackvllle Airway . He guarantees absolute quiet on our stop at Flack- ville. Virginia McDougall is air hostess on Bert's largest transport and therefore we discover, from her, many interesting facts about our dear class of '48, According to 'Ginnyg' Pat Sovie and Marion Fritz are still working on that Victory gar- den they started a few years ago. They just don't seem to have any luck with those beans. Flossie Cardinal, after having been a phys- ical training instructor in the WAACS , has settled down to enjoy life and relax by teach- ing school. She certainly ca.n't be teaching as quiet a class as ours! ! Charles Shunk now has full control of the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester: in fact, he practically' owns the town, but Pat Hannan still maintains a section of it for her young ladies finishing school, although there's talk of a merger. Therese Brown has just been appointed radio announcer at station WSLB . She has her own musical program entitled It's swing and sway with Chubby and Tae . Of course, Chubby is on the program. Lil Sovie and Stella Donaleski have dual- ly bought Lalonde's riding academy. Fooled you dldn't we? They both are bus drivers and can ride all day without tiring. Doris Kennedy. a. 'brilliant scientist was experimenting in the largest lab in the World over in Waddington when all of a sudden- pooff ? ? She really was a nice girl. Shirley Cody, the girl with the lowest marks in the Senior Class has finally suc- ceeded ln olbtaining a doctor's degree. It's marvelous how she managed to keep up her marks. As we land to take on a passenger we are surprised to find that he is none other than Joe Bergeron who has been making a tour as the double of Frank Sinatra , the famous singer. We are proud of the fact that Joe received his lirst training in the Study Hall. Joe adds his news to ours by telling us that Helen Rolfe has received world-wide recog- nition on her book entitled TEN EASY SHORTCUTS on TAKING FRENCH DIC- TATION . Helen guarantees results or else more short-cuts. We also discover that Don Harradine is running a ranch in New Mexico. It's the funniest thing but he seems to be rais- ing wolves . Could it be? Lester Rishe ls foreman. He always was one to lead llhlngs. How about that front seat in History C? Theresa MacDonald, Beverly Poore, Mary St. Andrews, and Rita George have become partners in the Prescott Ferry. Now, they can go and come when they please without troubling anyone. Margaret LeBeau is the new telephone op- erator. Instead of saying hello, Mert , we say hello, Marg . She certainly can visit, that girl! Euclid Mariea and Tony Milla now have charge of the Town-Meeting. It it is impos- sible to get guest speakers for the discussions, Tony and Euclid provide the debate them- selves. Betty' Ramie has been elected president of the Six Footers Club for girls. Remember how tall she used to be? Elsie Boothe and Jean Gotham, two trained nurses, have left for Sampson, New York, where they will receive their Boot training ,as Navy nurses. Their slogan is Keep them mended. Rita Loughren and Janet Bew have become the world's Chamxpion Bowlers. They have just won their twelfth cup. Thelma Malnville, successor of Walt Dis- ney, has gained much fame as the creator of Elmer Snit, the pride of Hickemda.le . It has just been announced that Dick Kennedy has won his sixty-fifth honor for his ability to create slogans. One that is sure to endure lasting fame is his Ten Tickets or more will raise the score . Remember his ticket-selling ability hack at old S. M. A.? Alice Lunderman is now the private sec- retary to Admiral D-lin the navy.. I wonder if it's the shorthand she likes. Lorraine Richards has gained local prom- inence as the only woman Alderman. She certainly must have received this position through her great amount of speaking alblllty gained in high school. Eve, the Aviatrix , as she is popularlyv known by her many admirers, recently made a cross-country non-stop flight in her little flivver. Betty' Hannan is now teaching a. class of forty students how to swing Tschaikowsky, Mendlehsohn, and Beethoven. It used to be such a quiet neighborhood, too! Lib Needle and Peggy Carroll, two fam- ous tennis champions have just played their sixth match with Don Budge and Alice Marble. They were always frequent visitors of the court. Claire Deserre, famous X-Ray technician has received a position at the A. Barton Hep- burn Hospital. She always did have a knack for taking pictures. Katherine Taylor has just celebrated her fifth anniversary' as an efficient librarian at the Congressional Library. Congratulations, Kath- erine, and keep up the good work! Clara Seguin has just recently' been elected as President of the Alpha Beta Gamma. So- rority. Her efficiency is due to her splendid work as vice-president back in S. M. A. Star and Hee Doe always did like to sell stuff. They're now selling a. line to the natives in Brazil. Yes, you guessed it, they own a coffee plantation down there. Jim Robillard now has a twelve piece orchestra which ranks among the best. Joyce Austin and Walt Cunningham are featured as his dance team. They really are tops! The yearning for S. M. A. brought Mar- garet Murphy, but this time to teach. She's instructing the first grade and drills on the art of keeping silence. Remember how quiet she was in the study hall. Paul DuPre, due to his great writing ability, has gained world-wide fame as editor of the New York Times . He's devoting an entire page to the advertising of Elaine La.douceur's new super soft drink, 'Cherry-Ko . Betty Bushey and Phyllis Roshirt have opened a day nursery to keep small children from getting into mischief. They always did have a way' with children. Billy McNally de- votes part of his time to amusing the children by singing for them while he air-conditions their playroom. We have come to the close of our tour which ends our prophecy. We hope you have enjoyed hearing about the class of '43 as much as we have enjoyed telling you about it. Stella Donaleski, Elizabeth Needle, Peggy Carroll, Elsie Boothe. Wafeddctazg About two thousand years ago in the near East area another greatest nation was at war. In the brief message, Veni, vidi, vici, I came, I saw, I conquered, the Roman Sen- ate received Caesar's account of his decisive victory over Pharnaces, son of Mithridates of Pontus in Asia Minor, in 48 B. C. Many re- ports of victory before and since that day have stirred .people to exultationg witness Perry's cry from Lake Erie in 1813, We have met the enemy and they are ours. Each brought hope for permanent peace. How we might rejoice today should the United States Senate receive a similar laconic statement from our heroic generals in far-flung battle fields. On the home-front, we, graduates, might be tempted, under other circumstances, to re- peat Caesar's boast tonight as we finish our high school course. But the realization that blessed peace has not yet decreed the return of our soldiers forces us to check impulsive words and consider our preparation for the battles of life. In one hand we hold high the banner of our Catholic Faith to show the world the cause for which we are fighting. In the other, we hold the 'sword of knowledge-the knowl- edge we have been storing up for twelve years. The lofty ideals, sturdy principles, strong virtues inculcated at home and in school form our bulwark of defense. We feel ready, even eager for future combat. Tonight we say farewell to this preparatory training. To its drills and studies, to its happy gather- ings and fun, we bid adieu. Yet we linger in memory over the part our gallant officers have played in this manifold training and our hearts swell in gratitude to you for making possible our initial victory-graduation. Though our General, the Most Reverend Francis J. Monaghan has been called during the past year to the far-country by our Com- mander-in-Chief, we wish to express our ap- preciation of the work he did to further Cath- olic Training among us. To you, our Major General, Monsignor Ber- ube, we offer our sincere thanks for the many improvements we have enjoyed in our be- loved 'school because of your kindly interest. Four years ago, there came to St. Mary's with us, one whom we hold as classmate, friend, and guide, our Colonel, Reverend Clar- ence Devan, whose example of unselfishness and devotion has given us a pattern for our own life. As we wage our battle, may we show grateful recognition of this by forming our- selves after the model you have given us. You, dear Sisters, as the Sergeants of our ranks, have granted us counsel in the difficul- ties and problems of every phase of our school life. You were always willing to give up your spare time to help us. Though many times we may not have shown it, we are 'sincerely grateful. Dear parents, you are the Captains to whom our Commander-in-Chief has entrusted the care of our souls as well as of our bodies. You deserve the greatest share of our thanks. In fulfillment of your trust, you saw to it that we might have a good Catholic Training in order to equip us thoroughly for the combats of life. How grateful we are for your fore- thought as we face the shell-torn, hazardous world of todayg armed with a share, at least, of your courage, generosity, and self-sacrifice! Now we venture forth into battle, Fellow Soldiers. Though most of us will not earn the distinguished service cross, may we render valuable service. Let us stay in the light of God's love and we shall be sure to win our battles -so that we, like Caesar, may say at the last great Victory of our lives, Veni, vidi, vici. Just preceding the game came the selection of the starting team from a large number of able candidates. These in- cluded our Class Teacher at center, Carmen Milia and Peggy Bowes guards, with Pat Mc- Nally and Tom Hannan filling the forward berths. Our first attempt to score worked nicely when with plenty of team work we scored a very successful hit, our first Soph dance. Also with the help of our able support- ers, with the sharp shooting of our mothers we almost scored again, but we were hindered by foul weather. At the close of the first quar- ter with brilliant teamwork from our class- mates, Gordon Mitchell and Joan Scarlett, we scored for the third time during the first quar- ter when they held the high SD0tS OD NOVGIH' ber Honor Roll. The second quarter found the class of '45 prepared for a hard fight. This quarter .pre- sented many chances to score and many times we did score. Constance Paquin, Marie Shunk, Floyd Boulia, Joyce O'Brien and Donald Brouse entered the Book Week Poster Con- test held by the school. While our small bat- tle was going on, War was also hitting many decisive and vulnerable spots. Our supporters took part in activities for defense to boost our 'score yet higher. We closed our second quar- ter with a very beautiful score when Joan Scarlett assisted 'by Betty 0'Hare, Dave Holden, Elaine Rishe, Carmen Milia and Tom Hannah headed the list of our January Honor Roll. After the half, our team returned to the scene of the Same with renewed vigor and de- termination to conquer. A very outstanding moment in our third quarter took place when with the support of our rooters we scored twice, finst ln a very successful raffle which enabled us to have an elaborate Class Party on February 4th, Following up this scoring spree came another when because of our gen- erous classmates we were able to ransom nine pagan babies, five girls and four boys, from their pitiful state of helplessness. The second team for basketball included Walt Pir- ie, Dave Holden, Larry Powers, Carmen Milia, Leonard Knable, Francis Austin, Leo Degone, and Tom Hannan. The boys up to date have played eight games winning five and losing three which puts them in the tie for first place for the intramural championship. The girls also played winning two and losing five very close ones. Their team includes Theresa Doe, Peggy Bowes, Mary Jane MacDougall, Evelyn Nesky, Nancy Laffin, Kay Ashley and Joyce O'Brien. Also during this quarter two free shots were made good by Peggy Bowes and Donald Brouse as Marcella and Tony in the play Sing a Song of Sixteen . At this time a new supporter, Elsie Gaddor, joined us. The fourth quarter found us putting them ln as regularly as in the three preceding quar- ters. We scored beautifully when we pledged our loyalty and support to St. Mary's Acad- emy. The team and its supporters wish to thank all who helped to coach us in the diffi- cult game of the Sophomore Year. lt won't 'seem long until we shall come back for a re- turn game with that ever powerful team of Success, to strive again to attain, as in 1943. the successful scoring punch and stamina which was shown by all members and sup- porters of our ever glorying Class of 1945. TOM HANNAN S 4:7044 Since we are involved in this present world conflict lt is no more than right that we should put in a section of what our class has been doing for National and Civilian Defense. Those boys and girls who own war stamps or war bonds are 1 Marie Amo, Cecelia Rivers, Joan Sharland, Mary Carmen Murphy, Kath- erine Ashley, Mary Dodge, Patricia McNally, Jean LaMacchia, Margaret Bowes. Patricia Deserre, Elizabeth 0'Hare, Jeanne Sovie, Theresa Doe, Laura Van Cise, Theresa Wil- liams, Robert Ryan, Robert Rolfe, Thomas Hannan, Carmela Milia. Dayton Connors, Lawrence Powers, Joseph LeBeau, Leonard Knable and Ronald MacDonald. For Civilian Defense some of the boys and girls have volunteered to do various kinds of work. Those engaged ln first aid work ,are: Gordon Mitchell, Donald Brouse, Floyd Boul- la, Francis Austin, Mary Carmen Murphy and Katherine Ashley. Theresa Williams and-Ellz- abeth O'Hare belong to the Junior Red Cross. Laura Van Cise and Mary Carmen Murphy vol- unteered as messengers during blackouts. Aid- lng in the flight command are Jean LaMac- chla, Patricia Deserrc, Katherine Ashley, Pa- tricia McNally, Margaret Bowes and Mary Jane MacDougall. These girls watch for planes at the look-out on the roof of the Hep- burn Hospital. Dayton Connors and Joseph LeBeau are stretcher bearers and Charles Amo is an air raid warden. Richard Penfield is making model airplanes. Besides this, sev- eral boys volunteered to work on farms last summer. They are: Joseph LeBeau, Thomas Hannah, Walter Pirie, John Tomlinson, Donald Brouse, Leonard Knable and Robert Rolfe. For the scrap drive Raymond Fritz, Pe- ter Rufa, Leonard Knable, John Tomlin-son, Floyd Boulia, Francis Austin, James O'Neil, John Bergeron, Donald Brouse, Walter Pirie, David Holden, Lawrence Powers, Joseph Le- Beau, Charles Amo, George Crowder, Daniel Kennedy, and Carmela Milia collected scrap. All of these Sophomores have shown them- selves eager to help their country, and we hope that they will keep up the fine spirit. Since training in Democracy is essential to future citizens of the post-war world, this year at St. Mary's we have inaugurated a new type of government based on the idea of a President and his Cabinet. Judges and Assistant-Judges were chosen to help the penalties against law- breaking student to be more easily decided. Each class has four representatives in the Student Council. The Sophomores chose as representatives Jean LaMacchia, Elizabeth O'Hare, Thomas Hannan and David Holden. Mary Moulton, Mary Jane MacDouga1l, John Dufore and Robert Rolfe are the Sophomore policemen. The Class of '45 has promised to uphold the Student Government in its work and to cooperate with it in establishing law and or- der within the -school. JOAN SCARLETT ur -'Nw fl 52 . Two Points - Class Party On February 11, we held our class party in a dance hall, beautifully decorlated with our class colors. Our guests were Reverend Father Devan, Father Coseo and Father Ryan. A few Words were spoken by Donald Cardinal and the class otlicers. Two Points - Second Dance We held our second dance on February eleventh and it was both a social and financial success. Five Points - Ticket Contest We proved our school spirit in our cooperation in the sale ot tickets for the annual school play. As a class we sold the total of 570.20 worth of tickets. Our competition was among our own class mates. Joan Smith, our zealous secretary, worked hard to bring her team out highest. The other members of her team were Mary O'Brien, Gloria McKee and Mary Woods. They won the first prize offered by the school. Other teammates were: Ruth Cunningham, Gloria Lopez, Donald Cardinal, Fred McDonald, Harold Doe, Jack Farley, John Costigan, Joseph F. Dashnaw, Jim Owens, Matt Roshirt, Joe McKee, Joe and Bob Mont- gomery. Seven Points - War Workers - Participating in our war program are Jean Henry and Jane Whitcombe, Eleanor Doe, Edward O'Dona- hue, Julia Maloney and Mary Lapoint. We gladly used this point for Uncle Sam. Five Points-School Play ' Members of our own class who were chosen to take part in Sing a Song of Sixteen were Gloria Lopez, Margaret Murray, Judith Gotham, Mary Catherine McLellan, Patricia 0'Nell, Nancy Mc- Namara, and Anna Seymour. This left the school without a coach and with no prospects of one. Father Devan scoured the North country and finally found a man capable of filling the position, Mr. George Welcher of Massena who had starred in football and baseball there. .Mr. Welcher arrived at St. Mary's Academy around Sep- tember 28 and immediately called the football players to re- port for practice. His call was answered by ten veterans of last year's team and by eleven new-corners. Due to the war gas rationing, we could schedule only one game.
