MARY'S ACADEMY S ANGELES, CALIFORNIA With three sharp blows of a silver hammer, Our Holy Father unsealed a small door in Saint Peter's Basilica, and traditionally opened the Holy Year of l95O. By this simple yet significant ceremony, he directed new avenues of grace to refresh his children for the battle ahead, a battle for peace, and even more important-- a battle for God! We, daughters of Holy Mother Church, whose high school dag are over, are especially thankful for the timeliness of this year of special grace. We unite with Pope Pius Xll in praying that we may each do our share in leading the world back to Christ. ln token of our sincerity, we have selected the Holy Year as theme for the Illuminatio of l950. Our gratitude goes to the Faculty for making this theme doubly appropriate. Their untiring efforts to bring us a true appreciation of our Faith have made each year under their guidance one of spiritual growth and grace. lt is they who have made the Holy Year of l950 a fitting culmination for the holy years we have spent at Saint Mary's. MARGO DARCEY, '50 To Our Holy Father, Pius Xll, we the Gold Ties of 1950, dedicate llluminotio, praying God's blessing on him and Mother Church whose fostering cure witnesses the Tri-centennial of the founding of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and the Year of Grace-the Holy Year. We have not spent our years here to become illustrious in the eyes of the world, but to become apostles on earth and saints in eternity. Although we may never face death for our Faith, we must face life and at Saint Mary's we have been instructed in the truths that inspired the martyrs. ln a world chilled by forgetfulness of God, we must love Him with the intense love of the martyrs, we must serve Him to the fullest extent of our being, we must carry Him to others with the zeal of the apostles. Under the guidance of our Blessed Mother and the principles we have learned at her Academy, we must go forth to bring Christ back into the world. The year is climaxed with the Baccalaureate Mass in which the Seniors beg God's blessing on the days that lie ahead. Fm? 1i.x.x X .1 .1 11 . But being sophomores we are the overlooked class which is neither this nor that. Even though we are undefined there is a special spark in each one of us-a spirit filled with enthusi- asm, which enables us to do the very best in whatever we undertake. All too quickly our first two years at S.M.A. have slipped by, and soon we will be upperclassmen - iuniors, and that very same enthusiasm will be there ready to give us that extra push into the realms of a third year where we will become ever-improving children of Mary. On September twelfth starry-eycd freshmen, young and untried, arrived at the gates of Saint Mary's. Keeping the names of the sisters straight, getting acquainted, and being in the right place at the right time was indeed perplexing. But we knew enough to elude the gracious seniors on Initia- tion Day. We studied furiously to master gerunds, the third declension, and the decline and fall of ancient Rome. We are alert and 'full of spirit. People say of us, Wait 'til they're seniors! They'lI really be great. But why wait until then, when we are great now! We study the hardest, pray the mightiest, play the liveliest, and cheer the loudest. The story of the simple peasant girl of Lourdes to whom the Immaculate Concep- tion appeared seemed a fitting production for the senior class. We enioyed working on The Song of Bernadette because the characters whom we portrayed made us realize that corners are not for Mary's children.
