E W E 5 ae 5 5 fum f - ' fy' N. Sf. Mary's Academy Los Angeles, California Foreword The inspired labors of Father Junipero Serra, saintly founder of California's first missions, compose the theme of the llluminatio of l949. Nine missions stand as mute testimony of his life work. Because of this work, and even more for his spirituality, his virtue, and his consuming desire to save souls for Heaven, the cause for the canonization of the Apostle of California is now being pleaded. We, daughters of the Golden State, most particularly cherish this holy padre, who toiled here a full century before the great Gold Rush of I849. We unite our prayers with those of all faithful Christians that Father Serra may receive the golden crown of sainthood. Now, at the end of four blessed years at Saint Mary's, we acknowl- edge our debt of gratitude to the Faculty for their prayerful guidance and edifying instruction by word and by deed. They have been apostles to us as surely as was Junipero Serra to California in her infancy. -EILEEN KLINE, '49, Dedi ation Long before a lonely prospector first gazed in wondering awe at a handful of shimmering ore in a 'fertile Cali- fornia valley, Father Junipero Serra had discovered the far greater riches of the Golden State. As a tribute to this saintly apostle who won the price- less treasure of human souls for the immortal glories of Heaven, the Green Tie Class dedicates the llluminatio of 1949. ,Ae ,. -A A ,,,,,,n-..A.-4--U ...:- - A -- ..4r':y 1. -1 ., 34 'if' -ur: Q ig? Yes, the Green Tie Class of the centennial year of 1949 bid our beloved St. Mary's a fond farewell, prepared to meet the unknown vastness called Tomorrow. We possess the same courage of the original '49ers, but other than material gold we seek everlasting happiness as children of God. We must remain on the Trail of Christian Education it we are to arrive at our goal, for fiery arrows in the form of persecution, bigotry, and sin will try to turn us from the prize we seek. The dreams, the hopes we have, with God's grace shall be realized! Of St. Patrick, our patron and a pioneer Christian, we beg perseverance and aid in all our undertakings. Our Alma Mater will always hold 'first place in re- membrance of things which gave security, sanctity, and succor to the corporal and spiritual lives of her loving children who will pierce the walls of unborn times. -THE SENIORS. As we of the Gold Tie Class look back at our Junior year, it is with gladness and pride, yet there is sorrow, too, for we must say goodbye to our Seniors, the beloved Green Ties who leave us with many fond memories. When we came back to St. Mary's in September, we were soon en- gaged in plans for Junior Day. Feverishly we worked until the eventful day arrived. Booths, horror shows, gay costumes, and entertainment were highlights of the Junior frolic. Next on our agenda were Christmas preparations. A party, deco- rated tree, gifts, and Santa Clauses were all included in our holiday merrymaking. Almost before we knew it, Lent arrived with Pagan Babies and retreat -self denial and spiritual food. After Easter we found the remaining days filled with events-the whirl and rush of the Junior-Senior Banquet, the never-to-be-forgotten Prom, and most important of all, we were ushers at graduation. Yes, we were there. We played an active part in all activities- sports, band, glee club, dramatics, school drives, and games. As we bid farewell to our Junior days, we look forward with antici- pation to September when we shall at last be Seniors! -SHIRLEY BURKE, '5O. - f ' -1-Tv -- Top Row-From Left: Patricia Wagner, Joan Keron, Diane Rudolph, Joan Binns, Louanne Robb, Lilyan Leyba. Religious, Catho- lic-minded teachers draw from the soul, beauty of expression through nimble fingers, agile minds. The Cecilians, an organization named after the sainted patroness of music, has essayed to bring about in the student body a more complete understanding and appreciation of the melodic art. One of the principal means is the St. Cecil- ia's Day program annually given on November twenty-second. Noted concert artists give us the pleasure of their talents, the music students dis- play their ability in class recitals. In short, music has an all important, vital role in the life of each and every girl who enters St. Mary's. Our main projects were the art and snap sections of the year book and par- ticipation in contests sponsored by the Youth Education Fund, Mary's Hour, and the Scholastic Art Awards. In February the art students enjoyed the privilege of viewing the masterpieces from the Berlin museums. Among some of the great masters represented were Hals, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Correggio, Botticelli, and Titian. Because of the cultural advantages offered and the outstanding cooperation of its members, it has been a privilege and an honor to serve the art class as president. -MOLLIJO CUNNINGHAM, '49.
