SMA SCHOOL BOARD LETTER TO THE GRADUATES Dear Graduates, Class of ’84: It was four years ago that we, you and I. entered St. Marys Academy High School. You came as students eager to learn, to call yourselves High School students, to enjoy your years after Elemen- tary School and before College. I came as the ad- ministrator of the school eager to guide you, to see that you were prepared for your next stage in life — to enter a college, to go into a career, to take your place in society. And so. we have shared, as it were, four years of being together. We have walked together through sad moments as we saw schoolmates called home to the Creator or moving off to other schools or to college. We have shared joyous moments, also, as when honors were earned by you or when the basketball team achieved unheard of successes or when you received your class rings or attended the annual formal dance. And now as we leave St. Mary’s Academy, as we go forth, we can hopefully look back and realize that each of us. you and I. has been positively affected in some way by another. That is what will keep us in each other's memories — thoughts of those unique moments, crazy situa- tions, little things that happened that seemed so minute and yet meant so much. To live in the world of the 80s is no easy task. We find ourselves thrown into the company of those who profess no high moral principles, of a media that has no restraints. We must rub shoulders with those who profess inability to find time for God and prayer. We walk and will walk side by side with those who have no concern beyond their own immediate material future. We have to live in a world where double-dealing and dishonesty and injustice are considered rather useful practices, not vices, and we are faced with all kinds of temptations. For any of us to brush aside, as of no consequence, the words of warning which have been offered by those who have lived in this world long enough to know what they are talking about, is to show that we do not understand what a grim reality life is. and what a battle is to be waged if we are to live successfully and happily. And when is a person successful? Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: That man is a success who has lived well. Laughed often and loved much; Who has gained the respect of men and the love of children: Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; Who leaves the world better than he found it whether by a perfect poem or a rescued soul; Who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; Who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. And so. let us go forth to be successful, to use our talents for God and Country. Church and family. God Bless You and give you happiness and success! Brother Bernard Hansen
