From our first year in school until now, when we are about to depart from St. Mary’s Academy, the Sisters have guided and instructed us. They have helped us through many trials. Therefore: For your interest and understanding when we needed it most, for your prac- tical aid on every occasion, for your personal interest in each one of us, for your kindly humor, for giving us so much of your valuable time to make possible an in- valuable Catholic education, for your many years spent with us in St. Mary's Academy, we, the Class of 1982, lovingly and gratefully dedicate our Echo to you, The Sisters of St. Joseph. 17 1982 Class Will WE, the CLASS OF 1982, graduates of St. Mary's Academy, Hoosick Falls, New York, being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make, publish, and declare this to be our CLASS WILL. Dream until your dreams come true. Aerosmith Tomorrow is a dream that leads me onward, always just a step ahead of me. . Success is measured by one’s goals and ideals not other’s. Dreaming takes me away to where I've always heard it could be. Just a breeze and the wind to carry me; soon I will be free. Christopher Cross 21 The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle the essential things is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” If you can imagine it. you can achieve it. If you can dream it you can become it.” So I am told it is cold and harsh but I am destined to conquer it because it is this world which awaits me now thus I am chosen sample, no one is above me. nor anyone below me. we are all equal.” All in all it was another brick in the wall. Class of 1982 117 Dear Graduates of the Class of '82: Anothei segment of life is finished: another period of time has passed by never again to be lived and never to be given back to us. Did you ever stop to think of how we measure our lives in terms of birthdays, our first date, graduations, marriages? Perhaps you would like to reflect for a few minutes about time in our lives. Remember when you were 9, 10. or 11 years old how slowly time seemed to pass? A school day and a school year seemed to take forever. Summer vacation never seemed to come and yet, September would return so quickly. Christmas and our birthday, those high points in our life, never seemed to come quickly enough. Life seemed to pass so slowly. Time crept! But, when you look back in retrospect at those slow days and endless waits, they now seem so short. They did pass quickly! Where did grammar school and especially the last four years at St. Mary's Academy go? Then listen to your grandparents, especially those who are alone. Notice how they speak of days that seem so long. Nights and sleep seem short; morning comes quickly and the day seems endless. Time slows down for them and it weighs so heavily on their mind. Some even long for eternal rest. But think about time in your own individual life. So far you have experienced many things and, hopefully, will ex- perience many more. The phenomenon of time can be most pleasureable or most disturbing. Jacques Brel composed a song Crazy song “Crazy Carousel, in which he tells how quickly the 20’s. 30's, 40’s and 50’s in our lives go by; a kaleidoscope of people and events. Imagine twenty-five years into the future; it's 2007 A.D. Even that date seems frightening. You are sitting in an auditorium or gymnasium; your son or daughter is graduating from high school. Suddenly, everything around you fades away, and into that silence come the ques- tions —“Where have the last 25 years gone? “I am 43!” “What have I accomplished?” “Who really is this person next to me, and who am I?” Imagine how devastated you will feel if you can't find answers to those questions, or worse, if you have never tried to grapple with them. And while you are thinking along with me, have you ever wondered why you were born at this particular time in history, in this country, with this set of parents and friends? Why are you here at St. Mary’s Academy? When you see the starving and the less for- tunate on television, when you read of the lack of personal freedom of some of the people of the world, does it occur to you that you could have been born in that hungry, diseased body? You could have been that political prisoner or you could have been that minority person suffering discrimination? Why weren't you born 1,000 years earlier or later? Thinking of all the variations of time, place, and people that are possible in the history of the world, and your place in it, can be frightening and a cause of wonder. You have learned many things during your time here at St. Mary's Academy. One thing, I hope you have learned, is the recognition of God’s presence and the love in your life, especially during this particular time which He has given you to come to know Him, yourself, and others. He has given you life in a period of history that is exciting, with parents, loved ones, and friends who care about you, in a country where you are free to use the talents He has given you. He has granted you a portion of time that is precious and can pass all too quickly unless you pause at times like these to reflect on this gift. On behalf of the teachers and staff at St. Mary’s Academy who have been instrumental in your development over the past four years, we are grateful to Him for sending you to us to assist in your educational growth. We thank Him for the time we have shared with you. We hope you will remember St. Mary's Academy as a joyful memory in your heart and that in quiet moments you will take time to reflect on who you are, where you have been, and where you are going. We hope that St. Mary’s Academy has already given and will continue to help give some answers to these important questions. May the God of unending time give you, and those He has given you to know, and to love while here on this earth, peace, health, success and happiness during the remainder of your days in this world and a share in His never ending time thereafter. God Bless and Love each one of you! Sincerely, ✓ 'Brother Bernard Hanson, FSC Principal 118 Farewell From Class of 119 82 OUR ALMA MATER When the twilight shadows gather Out upon the campus green When the gold and purple dusk comes Stealing on the scene, Loyal sons of dear St. Mary’s Sing a hymn of praise To our dear old Alma Mater And our high school days.
