TUB-CHON N VMES ECHO ’80 St. Mary's Academy Hoosick Falls, New York Principal's Letter To The Graduates Dear Graduates. We Have spoken to you about change, and abqut how it is essential for you to be able to have some control over the influences that are going to transform you from what you are into what you are going to be. We would like speak to you now about the importance of your remaining the same. If you feel that there are qualities of real value in your character, if you can see an appreciable worth in the ideals you have acquired up to the present time if there appears to you consid- erable merit in the goals you have set for yourself in the future, then you are well on your way to becoming a mature and responsible human being. Keep those qualities in your character intact, make sure you retain your ideals, and never give up striving for the goals you have set for yourself as long as they remain worthwhile. There are certain qualities that are found in every good person, qualities which lend a spirituality to our human nature, qualities which you should cherish as priceless gifts, qualities which you should pro- tect against the slow erosion of change. First and foremost of these is the awareness of God. the ever-pres- ent consciousness that you have been created by God. that you are preserved in existence by God. and that it is your intention and His that you will eventually be united to Him in perfect happiness for all eternity. This is why you were made. This is an unchanging goal. If you miss this, all else is empty froth. The good person has a well-developed ability to distinguish right from wrong, good from evil, and the disposition to follow out the sug- gestions of this well-formed conscience. If you have a conviction that your sense of morality is a proper one. make sure that you do not allow it to be dulled by peer group pressure to a point where you are doing evil when you should be doing good. Even the good person, blessed with the disposition to do good, sometimes finds within himself, as Saint Paul did. the inclination to do evil. So you must occasionally look for help outside yourself. The greatest source of help, even greater than your friends, even greater than your parents, is the God. of whom, we have already said, you must always be aware. When you ask for his help, you are praying. Do not. for any reason, allow prayer to disappear from your lives. And finally, since you realize that change must come, and that somehow you must be able to control it. make sure that you have an active part in the changes that do occur. You should be a positive influence, an external grace, a spiritual helpmate for all of those whom you call friends. You should make every effort to help them to retain the qualities that you have found in them, that have made them good. Sometimes by just keeping them the good people that they are, you have changed their lives for the better, and this is what we really mean by Christian witness. May God bless you through life, may he allow those changes to occur in you that will be for your everlasting benefit, and may he give you the grace to retain all the virtues that make you holy and pleasing in His sight today. Sincerely in Christ Jesus. 2 3 The times have changed and we have changed with time. Together we shared the past and together we live the present. Will we influence the future, together? The future — how long do we wait and will the wait be worth it? Some of us are apprehensive and many are fearful. Our future lives depend on what we do now. Will we succeed in all of our endeavors? We all hope for the best for each other, but is hope enough? The future is where our dreams and our goals lie. The future is gaining upon us. Are we ready? Is it ready for us? 4 Tragedy at Kent Appollo 13, 14, 15 Serpico shot Tricia Nixon Marries Disneyworld Is Built Blackout in NYC Fighting in North Ireland Attica Prison Uprising Rock Rolls Butch Cassidy The Sundance Kid Kennedy Center Opened St. Mary's Academy Administration and Faculty Penny Holmes School Nurse Harry Landry Custodian Jean Shiland Librarian Most Reverend Howard J. I know no way of judging of the future but Lby the past. _________________________________________________________________ I hope the future holds for me the companionship of good friends, love, end happiness for eternity. If you love something, let is go free. If it comes back, it's yours: if it doesn't, it never was. 57 Oh. there's such a lot of things to do and such a lot to be. (A.S. Milne) Be yourself. Who else is better qualified? “ (Frank J. Giblin II) Days seem so long But when they're part of the past They seem to have gone by so fast But when we think of the future days They seem so far away. v MM •i” f 4 , ft M a ; «m- j § it ' i «V -• 0) “The secret of life is enjoying the passing of time (James Taylor) 58 To accomplish great things . . . We must not only act but also dream We must not only plan but also believe. The future and I will change the present just as the present has changed me and my dreams. The woods are lovely, dark and deep But I have promise to keep and miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep. (Robert Frost) You cannot judge future happenings by past experiences. 59 In the past, we have had a light which flickered, in the present we have a light which flames and in the future there will be a light which shines over all the land. (Winston Churchill) When time who steals our years away Shall steal our pleasures too. The mem ry of the past will stay And half our joys renew. (Thomas Moore) Keep in mind . . . Fame is a shadow money takes up wings and disperses: your self image is all that endures. Everything evolves around changing. Sometimes in order to get better things out of life, we must change the things around us and change ourselves. 60 Here I go. Swingin Lo. across that County Line. The noose that was around my neclc is far behind . . (Pousette-Dart Band) Take your time . . . don't live too fast Troubles will come and they will pass. Go find a woman and you'll find love. And don’t forget, son There is someone up above. The future looks bright. It gives us promises for tomorrow, and it takes away the pain of yesterday. Time bears away all things, even our minds. 61 I stole a ride on a passing star, not knowing where I was going, how near or how far. Through years of light, lands of future and past, until the heavenly gates were sighted at last. Time is the circle of life . . . Time is the creation of man. Therefore, time will end with the extinction of man. After all. it’s what we've done that makes us what we are. 62 The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is. We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there: we're gonna do what they said can’t be done. We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there. (Charles Franklin Kettering) Don't look back. Something may be gaining on you. (Leroy SatcheH Paige) 63 The pictures I see. they all tell a story. Bout where we been and where we’re goin. The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time. Any fool can do it— There ain't nothing to it. (James Taylor) All of my life I've been dreaming Till you came my way All of your life aren't you searchin For love forever All I need is someone to believe in me. (Peter Frampton) The fears of the present moment are the stepping stones to the future. Keep an eye on the future Live the present Let the past be a part of what we are. 64 BACCALAUREATE MASS AND BREAKFAST GRADUATION 1980 66 1980 Class Will WE. the CLASS OF 1980 Graduates of St. Mary's Academy of the Town of Hoosick County of Rensselaer State of New York being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make, publish and declare this to be our CLASS WILL.
