0 I. I s St. Mary’s Academy 1979 ECHO ''VREAfiAC 1 POPE JOHN PAUL II Pope John Paul II attracted the attention of the world when he began his papacy, because he was the first non-Italian Pope in 455 years. Now he attracts attention for his warm and youthful personality. He is truly a Pope of the people. Born Karol Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920. Pope John Paul was scholarly and religious even as a young man. He was ordained in 1946 at the age of twenty-six. In 1962 he became Archbishop of Cracow, later to be made Cardinal by Pope Paul VI. He is a theological conservative and staunchly defends the Church's current position on all issues. Pope John Paul has also set records by the number of Catholic teenagers present at his audiences. They are all impressed by his vigor and accessibility. Pope John Paul's reign promises to be long, rewarding and one that will always be remembered. Fr. Principal Mrs. Esther Bogardus Secretary 6 Mr Harold Landry Custodian Mrs. Jean Shiland Librarian Mrs. Penny Holmes School Nurse — Where can we begin to thank this woman? We’ve only known her for four brief years but we've come to rely and depend on her for just about everything. She's what you would call a “behind the scenes person . If she's not at her desk typing, filing, or answering the phone, she’ll be in the hall clearing up matters when everything is in chaos. Her job is never done. Secre- tary, cheerleading advisor, organizor and personal friend are just a few things she does in a normal day. Loyalty is her middle name. It's people like her who keep St. Marys run- ning smoothly. So Esther, as a small token of our apprecia- tion we gratefully dedicate this book to you. Thanks for everything! CLASS D SECTIONALS The post-season action started off in typical Eagle fashion as St. Mary’s bombed North Warren 94-52 in the Section 2 Class D tournament. (Bill Loretan and Jim Moore led the way with 21 points apiece). In the semi- final round, St. Johnsville fell 85-62. (Mike Baker pumped in 25 points and Mike Milliman added 24 for St. Mary's). A determined Argyle team shocked the Eagles in the finals 41-38, ending an otherwise perfect season for St. Mary's. Our Eagles, who finished with a record of 22-1 did win their share of honors for their brilliant season. In addition to the Northern Conference title and the Tama- rac Christmas Tourney championship, the Times Record” named first-year coach Joe Martelle small school coach of the year . Also, the Times Record voted Mike Milliman to their All-Area Small School Sec- ond Team. This Page Sponsored by HnMFgAVIKinQRAMIf This Page Sponsored by GLENN C. The next four years seem an eternity. They’ll be years of grow- ing both physically and mentally . . . four years of religion and social, English and French, Cheerleading and Sports. All we can do is dream. GOOD LUCK GRADS. . . The Sophomore year brings us one step closer to our dream of ending our school days, as a matter of fact, by the end of the year we’ll be half way there. AUTOGRAPHS Saint Mary 's Academy Parsons Avenue Hoosick Falls|NewVork Dear Graduates. The present itself is meaningless,' Bishop Sheen once wrote, “unless there is some reference to the past or the future It is our roots and our goals which can give meaning to each moment that we calt present . Even a day like graduation would mean ‘‘zilch to a person who simply walked in off the street to don a robe, climb the stage and be handed a diploma, neither cognizant of the opportunities which this? paper opened nor having made a personafiinvestment of time and study to earn it. The meaning of gradu-M ation comes from what has gone before arjd what is yet to come The meaning comes from the past: frorr | all that has been invested in you by almighty God, by your parents, your friends, your teachers, by thidh parish community, and by yourselves T e meaning of this moment comes from the future your potentiaH to grow and learn more, your opportunities to contribute good things to your world, your commumtiesffl your families, and from your destiny to be God s holy people and share His eternal life. The goal of Saint Mary’s Academy through the years, the reason why people have sacrificed for its existence, for its continuation, is to provide a place, a living situation, where those present moments o high school can truly be seen and understood in terms of past and future The past: creation by a loving God, the cross and resurrection of His Son. The future: a happy life involved in some way in making the world a better place; communion with Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and in the community of His Church, eternal life with Him in heaven. These thingson ycan give meaning and even happiness to the present moments. A man who watches the clock isn't enjoying his work. Time is a drag for him because he's living moment to moment A movie viewed by single frames would have a hard time holding our attention Jh I hope that Saint Mary's has given you more than a keyhole view of life. I will pray for you each day, especially at Mass, that your desire to live with God will help you to choose Him each moment that He gives you to live . . . choose Him as lovers of life, not as clock watchers spending time. May Christ live in your hearts . . . forever! James T. Spenard, OSA Principal 22 June 1979
