Thank You 5 Michael William Casey VICE PRESIDENT Is there a split between mind and body: and if so, which is better to have?” Kathleen M. Delurey If you cannot understand my silence, how can you possibly understand my words? Mariea L. Cramer One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul and yet no one comes to sit by it. David Grimm Few men fail because they lack in capacity, they fail because they lack in application. Teresa Hubbard No man is the whole of himself; his friends are the rest of him. 7 James Hyde At times it is better to keep your mouth shut and let people wonder if you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. Rita Kennedy SECRETARY-TREASURER God is more truly imagined than expressed, and He exists more truly than He is imagined.'' J. Wendy LaPorte Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow.'' 10 David L. Bishop of Albany Diocese 24 This Page Sponsored by THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION FACULTY 25 This Page Sponsored by BOB AND KAREN BROTT ' When the subject of dedication of the 1976 ECHO came up, only one name was uttered. Without hesita- tion this man’s name was unanimously agreed upon as the person to whom this yearbook would be dedicated. This is only one example of the respect and admira- tion this man has accrued. In his five years at SMA this man’s personal qualities have made a lasting impres- sion on all who he has come in contact with. His char- ity and guidance are unsurpassed. He is a tireless man who is always available to those who need him, whether it be for advice or counsel, or just someone to talk to and laugh with. His time, which appears to be infinite, is divided between his roles of teacher, priest, counselor, princi- pal, athletic director, and friend. All are carried out in an almost altruistic nature and manifest a man who deserves nothing less than to be held in our highest esteem. And now that we are moving away from his influ- ence, we regret that we have not given enough for all he has given to us. So, Father Michael McGuire, in an effort to show a fraction of our appreciation, we dedi- cate this yearbook to you. L. to R.: K. Delurey, I. Liporace, M. Percy, R. Albowicz, Fr. McGuire, M. That day had not come either quickly or easily; the way which led to the establishment of the Parochial School was not strewn with roses. The subject met with opposition when it was first broached, chiefly because of the great expense which would be incurred. However, when the order came to erect the school, the pastor, then Rev. J. D. Waldron, O.S. A., went into the work with his customary energy and brushing aside all opposition made arrangements for the undertaking. Land was purchased on High Street from the Ball Estate in the fall of 1888 and in the spring of '89 the excavation was made for the new building. In the course of the following year the building was completed. The school which up to 1889 had been officially known as St. Mary's Aca- demic School was raised this year in its standing with the Regents and became officially as well as locally known as St. Mary's Academy. Robert A. Skinner, Class of '94 Written July 16, 1901 I On September 14, 1958, official announcement was made at all the Masses by Fr. John J. Samond, O.S. A., of Immaculate Conception Church, that he had completed plans for a Building Fund Campaign with a minimum goal of $150,000 to help defray construction costs of a new, modern High School for St. Mary’s Academy to be located at High St. and Parsons Ave. This was welcome news to everyone. For years they had talked and dreamed of a new, separate high school for St. Mary's Academy. And now their dream was finally coming true. On May 30, 1959, Fr. Lamond broke ground for the new high school. His Excellency, William A. Scully, laid the cornerstone of the new buii September 12, 1959. And on November 6, 1960 the newly completed High School Building was blessed and dedicated. ( More recently, on September 3. 1971, the first Augustinian father was appointed as acting principal of S.M.A. In 1973-the Sisters of St. Joseph left the High Schgol after over 80 years gf service. And S.M.A. remains the only rural High School in N.Y.S. serving the regions of Cambridge, Salem, Ber- lin, Petersburg, Bennington, etc. Dear Graduates of the Class of 1976: I wish to congratulate you, your parents, and teachers as you come to the end of your high school career. You graduate from Saint Mary’s at an historic moment, just as our nation is celebrating its Bicentennial. The diploma that you receive has a special significance because it represents the privilege that was yours to attend Saint Mary's Academy, a Catholic high school, which has played no small pan in our American Catholic Heritage. This privilege was yours because many were concerned for you - your parents, priests, teachers and alumni - all have made loving sacrifices that you might experience these years of maturing in a Christian atmosphere of faith, hope and love. Moreover, your diploma is a symbol of youth and of accom- plishment in our comparatively young nation whose glorious goal has been the growth and development of its people spirit- ually, intellectually, and culturally. Yes, you owe a great debt: To your parents for the life, love, growth, training, guidance and inspiration they have given you; To your friends for joy and help; To your Country for protection, freedom and opportunity; To all your parish associations with their moral standards, principles and serv- ice. Freely you have received, freely give.” As you assume the responsibility of Christian leadership for which your Catholic education has prepared you, my prayer is that you will carry on what you have already begun in the liv- ing of lives that proclaim the message of faith, and hope, and love that has been passed on to you. Capture the spirit of these famous words of our first Catholic President, John F. Kennedy: with good conscience our only sane reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but, knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own. God bless you with health, happiness, and suc- cess in your future endeavors. Misty watercolor memories Of the Way We Were. Scattered pictures, Of the smiles we left behind; Smiles we gave to one another For the Way We Were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, Or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, Tell me, would we? Could we? Memories May be beautiful and yet What’s too painful to remember, We simply choose to forget. So it’s the laughter We will remember, Whenever we remember THE WAY WE WERE. ■ g •• - —' . - v - : - - - • - - 4 - - - - • -• -- : - ' - • , _ - ..
