Dear Friends and Class of 1963: To live in the world of today is no easy task. Repetition of this statement may be tiresome, but it is a fundamental truth of which we must all be convinced. We find ourselves thrown into the company of those who profess no high moral principles. We must rub shoulders with those who profess inability to find time for God's teachings. We walk side by side with those who have no concern beyond their immediate material future. We have to live in a world where double-dealing and dishonesty are con- sidered rather useful practices, not vices, and we are faced with all kinds of temptations. For any of us to brush aside, as of no consequence, the words of warning which are offered to us by those who have lived in this world long enough to know what they are talking about, is to show that we do not under- stand what a grim reality life is, and what a battle is to be waged if we are to live successfully. You are all acquainted with the story of Benjamin Franklin and the Whistle. If you decide that the world is not half so bad a place as it is painted, and there is nothing whatever to fear in coming in contact with it—it may not be long before you are soiled inwardly or morally, something more than just shop soiled; and when you come to manhood or womanhood, the mirror of your life is going to reflect the rueful reality that you have paid too much for a whistle. Therefore, to thine own self be true. All other verities will follow in their proper place. Father Charles E. Bauman, O.S.A. 7

CONSECRATION I am the way; the truth; and the life. If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me! For he who would save his life will lose it; but he who loses his life for my sake will save it. Although Christ could have refuted His Jewish accusers and rendered the Roman soldiers powerless, He willingly accepted the cruel death inflicted upon Him. This death He offered to God the Father. Thus, the Sacrifice of Calvary was Christ's offering of His own life for our sins. In gratitude, we, Class of 1963, consecrate ourselves to you, Christ on the Crucifix. 8
