Following weeks of much deliberation and thought we, the Class of 1961, have selected a theme for the Echo. We have decided to devote our yearbook to a tour of the new Saint Mary's Academy High School division. Before we begin our tour, it is only fitting and proper that we should review briefly the history of our Alma Mater. Our school was established in 1891 by the Augustinian Fathers of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Saint iary's, represented by Reverend Patrick J. O’Connell, O.S.A., «elcomed eleven Sisters of Saint Joseph who had been re- sted as teachers for the school. Six hundred pupils were ailed on September 8. 1891. The first commencement tcises were held on June 28, 1894. Icial problems forced Father Daniel Regan, O.S.A. to house to house canvass for funds to keep the school ration in 1895. Due to the loss of prosperity for the A. Wood Company, there had been a population de- which affected Saint Mary's. The people of Hoosick proved their generosity and the school remained in stion. In 1899 the name of the school was changed from Mary's Academic School to Saint Mary's Academy, tie Rev. George C. Egan, O.S.A. purchased the property on the present school has been built.
