When the last big game is over And the last roll call is heard, As the end of life draws near us All with joyous word, We shall come to Alma Mater In our dreams again. With a prayer for dear Saint Mary' And a sweet Amen. 1961 o PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS HOOSICK FALLS, NEW YORK Following weeks of much deliberation and thought we, the Class of 1961, have selected a theme for the Echo. We have decided to devote our yearbook to a tour of the new Saint Mary's Academy High School division. Before we begin our tour, it is only fitting and proper that we should review briefly the history of our Alma Mater. Our school was established in 1891 by the Augustinian Fathers of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Saint iary's, represented by Reverend Patrick J. O’Connell, O.S.A., «elcomed eleven Sisters of Saint Joseph who had been re- sted as teachers for the school. Six hundred pupils were ailed on September 8. 1891. The first commencement tcises were held on June 28, 1894. Icial problems forced Father Daniel Regan, O.S.A. to house to house canvass for funds to keep the school ration in 1895. Due to the loss of prosperity for the A. Wood Company, there had been a population de- which affected Saint Mary's. The people of Hoosick proved their generosity and the school remained in stion. In 1899 the name of the school was changed from Mary's Academic School to Saint Mary's Academy, tie Rev. George C. Egan, O.S.A. purchased the property on the present school has been built. On May 30, 1959 tier Lamond broke ground for the new high school. September 12 Bishop Scully laid the cornerstone of the Walt unt sdicated building which we are abou Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our country, our parish and our school, As special Mother of our class. Hear our fond remembrances Of our high school years under your care. Be mindful of our first day's fright as Freshmen; of our days of struggle as Sophomores; of our joys and jestings as Juniors; of our pleasures and plans as Seniors. You have aided us during the past four years. All our studies, activities and endeavors Have known your guiding love. Help us now, Mary, As we set forth on life's journey. We have need of you for you, like Your Son, know how often we stumble and fall. Holy Mary, Queen and center of our hearts, To you We, the Class of 1961, Consecrate our lives, our loves, our longings. Lead us, sweet Mother, to your Son. CONSECRATION Because of your constant assistance and practical aid. Because of your unselfish and unfailing encourage- ment in our work. Because of your inexhaustible patience and your stal- wart sense of justice. Because of the endless hours you have devoted to our advancement in education and Catholic living. Because of your motherly guidance and perpetual sin- cerity in all respects. Because of your understanding and generosity of heart, cause you are humility itself, at is why we, the Seniors, dedicate the 1961 edi- tion of the Saint Mary's Academy Echo to you Si4te l s4 u0tccv In September 1960. the new Saint Mary's Academy was ready for occu- pancy and on September 7th the stu- dents moved into the new high school division. On Sunday, November 6, Bishop Scully performed the solemn ceremony of dedication. Senior president, James Shaw, expresses greetings to His Excellency Bishop Scully on behalf of the Student Body of Saint Mary’s Academy. Participation of the clergy of the area added dignity to the ceremony of dedication. These priests as- sisted Bishop Scully at the blessing. 8 Bishop Scully, attended by Fathers Thomas and Andrew Lenahan, blesses the corridor and classrooms of the new building. The Bishop reads the solemn prayer of dedication at the entrance of the school. Bishop Scully's words inspire those in attendance at the dedication ceremony to take pride in the role played by Catholic education in the training of the lead- ers of tomorrow's America as Christ was trained in charity and justice. 9 The Reverend John J. Lamond, O.S.A. Pastor of Saint Mary's Church Principal of Saint Mary's Academy We, here at Saint Mary's, are especially indebted to our priests as sources of inspiration. Their interest in our welfare, both spir- itual and academic, never ceases. To them we express our heartfelt gratitude for their Christlike de- votion. It is our sincere hope that God will shower His graces upon His faithful servants. Father Lamond praises the people of St. Mary's in his speech on the occasion of the dedication. ADMINISTRATION The Reverend Richard P. Daley, O.S.A. Assistant Pastor Mrs. Raymond Sausville Sec. to the Principal 11 Mr. Edison Dorr Building Superintendent The Rev. Lawrence J. Gerrity, O.S.A. Assistant Pastor ye would like to begin the tour by visiting the heart of our school, the classrooms. Here, students of ;S.M.A. are instructed in a wide variety of subjects by our beloved Sisters of Saint Joseph. Each hour spent here brings us nearer our goal of completing Catholic education. Today in our modern world of missiles and atomi energy, an intensive education is a matter of neces - rity. In short, a well-rounded education equips us with the tools needed for carving a place in this twentieth century. We are of the opinion that thir- sn years at Saint Mary's form such an education, jr diploma from a Catholic academy are guaran- tees that we have been given this sound training and teaching. The Christian principles taught here are, if followed, our guarantee of a happy, wholesome Christian life, let's take a peek at those classrooms. Neil Cooney sneaks a look at Lorraine Lassor's and Donna Murphy's history homework before reporting to World Backgrounds class. Sister Mary Celine, C.S.J. Religion IV Social Studies Home Economics Studious Seniors give strict attention to the encyclical of Pope Pius XI on marriage during their Religion IV class. 14 Mapwork makes history come to life for these Juniors as John Ferranini points out the route to be taken by the American History class. Interested Sophomores follow Bill McAuliffe as he starts the next interesting chapter in World History. John Hickey approves of the bulletin arranged by Kay Burns and Neil Cooney. I got only one wrong! exclaims Jane Sister Mary Celine waits while her Social Studies IX group Mulvihill as a group of students corn- gathers information for the question posed. pare test papers from a World Back- ground class. 15 Sister Matilda Anne conducts a discussion class in Religion III. Fellow Sophomores listen attent- ively while Eve Burns explains a geometric theorem. Jim DeSacia shows that problems will always be problems as he works out a quadratic for the Math XI class. Members of Sister Matilda Anne’s Elementary Algebra Class; David McEvoy, John Dwyer, Margaret Hoag, Kath- leen Crowley and Richard Humphrey demonstrate their newly acquired skill at solv- ing intricate problems in mathematics. 16 Second stop . . . The typing class limbers up stiff fingers in preparation for a speed test. Walt Sausville, Neil Cooney and Tony Salluzzo were working so diligently at Business Arithmetic that they didn't even take time to smile at our photographer. We now find our tour stopping at Sister An- drew Joseph's Business Room. Within these walls we have become adept at typing, mastered the principles of Business Law and Bookkeeping and be- come proficient in Business Arithmetic. 22 The Freshmen will find themselves off to a good start in the business field if they apply the prin- ciples taught in their Introduction to Business class. Bookkeeping ledgers present no problem for Sharon Albowicz, Rosemary Flynn, John Fer- rannini and Mike Allard. Not a mile a minute but at least fifty words! The Senior typing class enjoys it, too. 23 We enter now our library, thfe quietest but busiest place in the building. Here via the printed page we can Sail the seven seas, climb every mountain or travel the highways of adventure to corners of the globe. New books always intrigue library visitors. It's all part of a day’s work, Maureen Mc- Grath says as she checks out books for Joann Hanselman, Ann Marie Flynn and Rosemary Hoag. All eyes are on the book as Sister Robertine instructs the Sophomores in the use of the Readers’ Guide. 24 There's nothing like looking before selecting, claim Eugene Murphy, John Ferrannini and Jim DeSacia. Librarians Margaret Hoag and Mary Eileen Hewson find it fun to shelf returned books. John Hickey jots it down and Dennis Keegan continues to search; while Linda Smith takes time out to browse. Are you related to Grandma Moses? ask Mary Laroche and Maureen Burke of Jackie Fleming, whose drawings are on display in the library. Using the card catalogue to help find books saves time for Kay Burns and Julie Martin. 25 It is now time to take a glance at the home economics room. Its appltances and utensils enable our girls to create, experiment and learn both in the field of cooking and sewing. Here, the homemakers of tomorrow are molded. rlfomc Sc It was a gala day when kitchen shower packages were unwrapped as Sister Mary Celine looks on. Donna Mur- phy, Kay Bums, Maureen Burke, Rosemary Flynn, and Anne Morin, assist with the unwrapping. These girls realize that they must read before attempting to apply the principles taught in homemaking. At a model luncheon, hostess Lorraine Lassor pours for her guests, Cheryl Kreshy, Mary Jane Casey, Ann Marie Flynn and Sharon Albowicz. Our photographer found these girls busy sewing on various projects for their Homemaking class. Rose Marie Stuka and Linda Smith try out a new recipe as Sister Mary Celine supervises. Peggy Benkoski and Maureen McGrath prove the old proverb, Many hands make light work. Judging from Judy Marcoux’s expression, that cake tastes as good as it looks. 27 This is sure a different one, exclaims Jim Shaw to fellow Earth Science students Sister Matilda Anne looks on as S.M.A.’s chemist, Donald Hay- den. does an experiment. Regardless of the results, our boys have played to the best of their ability and accepted the final score with a true spirit of sportsmanship.
