George C. Egan, O.S.A. ADMINISTRATION To Father Egan, for his kind assistance and understanding, to Father McCarthy and Father Ammering for their self- sacrifice in our regard, to Sister Anna Laurentia for her expert guidance, to Mrs. Burke and Mr. Dorr for their splendid work in our school, the class of 1957 extends heartfelt gratitude and appreciation. Their goodness and love of God, linked with their example and forebearance will forever endear the administration of St. Mary's Academy to us. Throughout the years, they have striven to implant Christ in our hearts by their verbal teaching and silent example. Year after year they have skillfully helped to mold our characters that we might be Christ-like in every way. Now that we are about to leave our Alma Mater, we can look back on our training and thank the kind sisters and priests for the good foundation they have given us. 7 r The Kindergarten children bow to their partners as they go through the steps of a square dance. Burke. Our years at St. Mary's have been happy and fruitful ones because of the companionship and mutual understanding we have found among our own classmates. We have worked together, prayed together, and enjoyed social activities together. In fact, we even have molded our lives in preparation for the future together. By working as one, we have increased our knowledge and developed our abilities. We have found our task of preparing for the future a much lighter and easier one as each of us joined together in sharing the joys and responsibilities of being Seniors. O my God, Thou art the sel. Petite, fashionable, charming, vibrant- Anne 20 As Catholics, we realize how important religion is in our lives. Because of its importance, it has been given a prominent place in our curriculum. We seek to include the religious aspect of life in everything we do. Thus we have brought religion into our classrooms, our clubs, our activities, in fact, our whole life. It is religion from which all of our actions should stem. Without belief in God, our lives are empty. For this reason, we are truly grateful for having had the opportunity of receiving a Catholic education. THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY SODALITY Sodality Officers and their Mothers enjoy the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet held in May. Lady Members of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality, an organization for theyoung Catholic girls of the parish, busy themselves throughout the year with their many social activities and religious services in honor of Our SODALITY OFFICERS: Treasurer A. Grennan; President M. Akoury; Vice-President G. Myers; Secretary J. Hayden; Corresponding Sec- retary G. Chapman with Moderator. Father Ammering. Here, the Sodalists give a hearty welcome to the incoming members. To these new members is left the task of keeping up the high ideals set by the organization when it was founded. 22 RETREAT AND VOCATION MONTH I he Vs orH Needs La i o! - cRcl.ere Many posters were displayed throughout the month of March to stimulate serious thinking in the students concerning their future vocations. THE CHOIR, under the direction of Sister Bernadette Anne, raise joyous voices in the strains of Salve Mater Misericordiae as the practice for graduation. JULIUS CAESAR Since our entrance into High School, many subjects which before seemed very vague and unintelligible have gradually come to be understood by us. This understanding has been a result of the excellent courses provided us here at St. Mary's. From these courses we have come to know about Math, the Sciences, Geography the History of our country, and the world, English, Languages, Business, and a variety of other subjects. But most important, we have also received the Christian viewpoint in connection with each of these. Because of this our classes have been of great value to us in preparing us for our future life. BUSINESS Jane Clarke and Joanne Hayden put the knowledge learned in Typing class to excellent use as they painstakingly pre- pare copy for their 1957 Yearbook. Under the super- vision of Sister Raphael, the General Business class discusses the relative merits of Cash and Credit buying. Amateur so Ions ponder the intrica- cies of negotiable instruments in the Business Law class. The Business Arithme- tic class assures itself of getting its just due in future years when dealing with discounts and commissions. Elin Hulihan indi- cates an error in Eleanor Saboski's board assignment as the rest of the English III class check their voca- bulary lesson. There's nothing quite so enjoyable for the English I class as a spirited discussion on to- pics such as, Are Homework Assign- ments Necessary? Lady Macbeth's famous sleepwalking scene becomes a reality as the English IV class hears Judith Anderson speak the lines, One, two; why, then 'tis time to do't . LATIN FRENCH Sister Anna Laurentia's Latin I class tackle their first transla- tions with apprehension. Sister Teresa Agnes' French I class writes Comment allez- vous? Je vais bien and other phrases during dictation. Logarithms problem when fied by board Latin II pupils follow Caesar into Gaul and beyond. Juniors translate difficult French phrases with ease. Cicero's orations impress the attentive Latin III class. Sr. Marguerite carefully explains the use of the board protractor to the Geometry Class. J. Hayden and T. Finnen learn the intricacies of the slide rule. SOCIAL STUDIES Panel discussions on crucial world topics prove both interesting and profitable to the Social Studies 9 class. The Freshmen agree that the solar system is a fascina- ting study. The controversial Suez Canal is of great concern to World History students. Should the federal government sponsor free college education? , is the topic of discussion in American History. Sister Marguerite points out the different spore forma- tions in ferns to some of her Biology students. The Physics class plans an experiment to demonstrate the law of moments. SCIENCE WiUtft. It can truly be said that sports have played a prominent part in our school years at St. Mary's Academy. With basketball and baseball leading the list, we have seen four years of action and thrills and enjoyed every minute of it. The climax came this year when St. Mary's Varsity squad won the coveted first place in the Catholic C League and travelled to Syracuse to play in the Catholic Playoffs. All this was accomplished through teamwork and fair play. If all that participation in sports has taught us is fair play and respect for the other fellow, then we have truly won another victory.
