THE 1955 ECHO Presented by THE SENIOR CLASS ST. MARY'S ACADEMY Hoosick Falls, New York u THE REVEREND DONALD AMMERING O. S. A. R A dm i n is t rat ion THE REVEREND LEO MCCARTHY O. S. A. Dedication To SISTER ANNA LAURENTIA, a truly Christlike religious, through whom we have come to know the meaning of Charity, Kindness, Patience. Peace and Benignity, we the Class of nineteen-hundred and fifty-five reverently and gratefully dedicate our Yearbook. As motherly guide during our grammar school days, home room teacher during our Sophomore year, friend and counselor during our upper class years, Sister has been generous in sharing with all, the virtues of kindness, cheerfulness and goodness with which she is so graciously endowed. Unceasingly and efficiently working for others, Sister has proved herself a true friend and inspiration whom we, her students, will forever love and cherish in our memories as teacher, guide and spiritual light. May God forever bless and keep Sister Anna Laurentia. SISTER ANNA LAURENTIA SISTER FRANCES REGIS FA C U L T 1 of St. Mary's Academy Sister Anna Laurentia Vice Principal, Latin Sister Frances Regis Religion IV, English, History Sister Marguerite Religion III, Mathematics, Science Sister Teresa Agnes Sister Raphael Sister Rose Margaret Sister Elizabeth John Sister Rita Michael Sister Francis de Sales Sister Eloise Sister Anna Magdeline Sister Joseph Michael Sister Bridget Marie Mrs. Morgan Burke Religion II, English, French Religion, Business, Latin Eighth Grade Seventh Grade Sixth Grade Fifth Grade Fourth Grade Third Grade Second Grade First Grade Kindergarten SISTER MARGUERITE SISTER TERESA AGNES SISTER RAPHAEL Classes Our school ring, enduring symbol of our student days, is also symbolic not only of our truly Catholic Education, but also of our aim through life. The “M” surmounted by the “Cross” indicates that it is through Mary that we shall most surely arrive at Christ; hence, our yearbook theme: “To Jesus Through Mary”. Pictured in each of our school rooms, invoked before each of our classes, Mary has been a constant guide and inspiration through all of our high school days, reminding us that we too may become Christ-bearers to the world. S. Teresa Agnes seems as interested as Sophomores B. Green, P. Simpson, T. Finnan and L. Bartoski as H. Hogan points out the scene of Christ’s first miracle in the Sophomore Class Study of the Life of Christ. Senior Religion Class begins daily with a sketch of the Saint of the Day, being read here by B. Burke with the topic of Vocations next on the agenda. An enjoyable way to start the day . . . Religion II Class with Sister Marguerite. M. Akoury, N. Ellis and A. Grennan work out their French sentences while W. Sherwin, G. White and D Bradley anxiously (?) await their turns. “Vinco-con- quer”. That’s what most Freshmen hope to do to Latin under the enthusias- tic tutelage of S. Raphael with E. Sabos- ki’s help. “Good things come in small packages.” says S. Teresa Agnes about her French III Class. R. Burns. E. Shaw and R. Griffin get plenty of chances to do boardwork. E. Levandowski seems about to cut in on C. Brandalik’s speech during a panel discussion in English I. R. Levandowski. J Guile and M. Burke are interested listeners. Linguistic experts are the Latin II Class and looking forward to Latin III and Cicero next year—that is. if they can count on having Sister Anna Laurentia as teacher. Higher mathematics computed with the efficiency of experts in Intermediate Algebra class with Sister Marguerite. The Sophomore boys agree that proving triangles congruent is a simple matter for M. Akoury, but B. Green is wondering if he will be as successful in proving his theorem. Citizenship Education G. Eberle is interrupted in her dusting by Seniors avidly interested in the morning’s news. T. V. takes over for the day in World History Class as L. Bartoski tunes in for a special program. Mapwork makes history come to life for these Juniors in American History Class, with L. Nealon at the pointer’s edge. Class of 1958 Sister Rose Margaret stands proudly with her Eighth Grade whose zeal this year led them to form a Civics Club and start a Class Paper! Our Blessed Mother is surely pleased with Sister Elizabeth John’s Seventh Graders for their out- standing Marian Club Activities. Sixth graders beam happily at the thought that their Fifth Grade teacher, Sister Rita Michael, will be with them again for another whole year. Standing straight and tall and looking their finest are these Fifth Graders looking forward to the year’s work with Sister Francis de Sales. Art blossomed in all its forms this year in the Fourth Grade under the ardent direction of Sister Eloise. The Third Graders learned reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling AND singing this year and had fun doing it with Sister Anna Magdeline. Sister Joseph Michael thinks her Second Graders are the nicest class in the whole school, and they feel that way about her too. The First Graders had a real store in their room this year, learned how to play musical bells and to square dance along with their reading, writing and number work as they “advanced in wis- dom. age and grace” under the supervision of Sister Bridget Marie. “We love school and our teacher agree the tiny Kindergartners after a happy year at S. M. A. with Mrs. Burke. Religious Activities student days has been the Life of Christ reincarnated in the Liturgy of the Church, so that Religion exists not as an isolated subject to be learned, but as a “life to be lived”. Our Sodality has been the core of our Catholic Action, deepening our appreciation of Holy Mass and the Eucharist, encouraging us to be Mary-minded, envisioning for us the ultimate extension of the knowledge of Christ throughout the world. I Autumn October brings Rosary Month and an effective bulletin board reminder that the Rosary is the Way to Mary. Faithfully adding beauty and dignity to liturgical ceremonies, the Choir stops during rehearsal to pose with their director. Sister Anna Magdeline. Kneeling ab nit the beautiful Nativity scene in the Kindergarten, these little ones make an appealing picture and bring us to the true meaning of Christmas. FORTY HOURS: The altar beau- tifully decorated, the sanctuary boys in their stiff and starched best, the procession of flower girls: all a fit- ting tribute to the presence of The Blessed Sacrament exposed on the altar of St. Mary’s during the Forty Hours Devotion. Spring OUR LADY QUEEN OF MAY ANNUAL MAY PROCESSION Traditionally, in all Catholic schools, the month of May is mark-ad by tributes of love and devotion to the Blessed Mother of God to whom this loveliest of months is dedicated. At St. Mary’s the annual May Procession and Crowning Ceremony is one of the most beautiful and memorable activities of the year. Sanctuary Boys and Sodalists. grade and high school students line up for the May Procession under Father Ammering’s direction. Parishioners and students of St. Mary’s join in prayer with the members of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality as they form a “Living Rosary”. “O Mary, we crown Thee with blossoms t o d a y.” Sodality President, M. Ruditis crowns Our Lady at the climax of the May Procession while Sodality Moderator Father Ammering attends. The Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality Carrying on an active program of Catholic Action whose keynote is spiritualized living, the So- dality, under the direction of Father Ammering, is an out- standing organization of high school girls. Is financial trouble brewing? Sodality President M. Madigan seems to be taking issue with Treasurer G. Eberle as Vice President B. Hanselman, Secretary L. Merrill and Co-Secretary J. Butkas await the outcome of the debate. Extra Currie ii la Acti vities Initiation, Magazine Drive, Dances, Programs, Ex- hibits, Plays, Prom! The roster of our extra-curricula activities runs like a calendar of the school year. Captured on the following pages, for future reminiscences, are scenes which underline the fact that even at our dances, in our pro- grams and displays the motivating foice is: “To Jesus Through Mary.” September Tlill .. , September Initiation was climaxed with Stunt Day at which the freshmen entertain- ed the high school in unpre- dictable wavs. H. Bromirski proved the star of the day. E. Levandowski and J. Fitz- patrick enjoy a banana banquet! Senior girls pose with the refresh- ments before serving. Could the seniors really be so mean? ? No, the snake was deader than dead—else why would R. Griffin be sc brave about it? October Receiving their awards as top salesmen in the magazine drive are: P. Graney. R. Pemrick, A. Grennan, J. Brennan, S. Bouplon, J. Hanselman and B. Greene. Assisting Sister Francis Regis are B. Burke and M. Branda- hk. ' - • ; ■ ; ■. November . Father Ammering watched, and everyone else danced! December Schoolrooms are transformed, windows carry the “Good Will” message and seniors add a finishing touch to the Bulletin Board as Christmas arrives at St. Mary’s. Science goes on, al- though Christmas is in the air—-and on the boards. Grand March led by: R. Sheffer, M. Ruditis, D. Begin. M. J. Millett, R. Severson, E. Shaw, W. Levandowski, M. J. Brandalik. June brought a memor- able event, the Junior- Senior Banquet held at the Four Chimneys. Bennington, Vermont. t “Our Lady, Queen of Victory, pray for us!” Through this title, we have constantly sought aid from Mary to help us advance in Christlike sportsmanship and skill. Mass on the morning of each game and a Visit that night have been very influential in helping us attain that goal. May Our Lady- help us to “fight the good fight” of life and attain to the Ultimate Victory.
