The Miriamette, the school paper is published quarterly by the special staff. The business staff of the yearbook supports the paper. Each year the members of the yearbook staff strive to make a bigger and better yearbook. This year the staff, with the cooperation of the faculty and student body, was able to introduce color into the yearbook and eliminate advertising. ln the last three years the ,Vliriam has placed twice in the competition at the Gonzaga Press conference. - 59 1-1 .mg

Debote Club The Debate Club is the most recent organization on the academy campus. Organized last year, the club began full-time operation in September. The national debate topic tor the year 1959-60 was the labor problem, Ore- gon's special topic was Resolved that section l4b ot the Taft-Hartley Act should be repealed. S.M.V.A. debaters met teams from the Inter-Valley De- bate League including Jesuit High, Providence Academy, Holy Child Academy, St. Mary's Academy, Mt. Angel Academy and Sacred Heart .Academy, Salem. Nine debaters traveled to Gonzaga University tor the Northwest Forensic tournament. All teams came home with excellent records, one iunior captured second place in oratory. Because of schedule conflicts on-ly four debaters could compete in the Linfield College tournament. Two sophomore debaters brought the first debate trophy home to the Academy. Next year the topic will be concerned with the NATO. Mary Ellen Ansbro, iunior debator, fcenterb smiles as she and The Reverend E. Morton, S.J., president of Gonzaga University, fextreme rightj examine her 2nd place certificate she won in oratory. Other winners in the tournament sponsored by Gon- zaga's speech department were students from Jesuit High school Cl. to r.J Richard Accaragui, Peter Edelson and Chris Ledwige. Sophomore debaters Roberta Barsotti GJ and Sharon Schulte came home from the Linfield Tournament with the 2nd place trophy in Junior Women's Debate. Both Sharon and Roberta are new members of the debate team this year. Resolved that section 'l4b of the Taft Hartley Act should be repealed. Margaret Byrne gives her constructive speech while her colleague Mary Ellen Ansbro gives an encouraging smile.
