These girls under the guidance of our principal lan and di- : P rect the major activities of the year. Before the social calendar of the academy can be formulated, members of the inter-school coun- cil must submit dates for approval. The inter- school council has representatives from the Cath- olic schools in the vicinity of Portland. Such sched- uling prevents conflicts-particularly in the social .events of the year. It is the duty of the student council to see that student government functions smoothly and that any infractions of regulations that might occur be eliminated. Through the student council and student gov- ernment the principle of subsidiarity is practiced at the Academy. We have the opportunity to de- velop qualities of leadership and on other oc- casions we must be followers. Christian principles, at all times, underlie the basic activities of our Gallery. Student body president, Mary Theresa O'Leary gives a formal welcome to the freshmen and new members of the student body. lnterschool council representatives UQ Margaret Byrne, junior and Kathleen Veriinski, senior, arrange to attend an l.S.C. meeting. Student council members enioy popcorn during a noon hour informal discussion. lst row Cl. to r.J Jana McFarland, Myra Flores, Patricia Charvet, 2d row, Rosalia Keim, Carol Charvet, Jacqueline McEacherng 3rd row, Patricia Cosby, Patricia Wehage, Margaret Byrne, Shannon Doran, 4th row, Mary Kay Hughes, Sue Seidow, Sharon Schulte, Roberta Barsotti, Mary Theresa O'Leary, and Kathleen Veriinski. Geometrician Margaret Mildenberger solves the problem while Marietta Rigert and Judy Walsleben Qlve moral SUPP'-VT' It isn't as difficult as it sounds, encourage fl. to Algebra students ll. to r.J Judy Stadter, Betty Baker, Shirleen Cason and Sharon Grittman are all smiles as they come to Algebra class. r.J Barbara Unger, Mary Jane Bueckman, and Rita Watkins, members of the Algebra-Trigonometry class. Mcithemcitics ln a basic mathematics course S.M.V.A. students have had an opportunity to take courses in algebra and geometry. Because modern research is making a constant de- mand tor a greater knowledge of mathe- matics, Algebra ll and Trigonometry were added to the curriculum this year. Stu- dents desiring to do so may earn a major in mathematics. W Chemistry students fl. to rj Candidate Ronnie Pecher, O.S.F., Shirley Davis and Kathleen Herauf examine a fellow student's project for the science fair. Do they like that? interrogates Annette Spiering UQ as Barbara Ensminger feeds the craytish. A third member of the biology class Patricia Neuman Cr.J seems contented to observe the process. Science Students desiring a major in science have an opportunity to pursue a tour-year science course at S.M.V.A. Physical science is a general course that gives an in- troduction to all the maior sci- ences. Biology, a required subiect for graduation is usually taken during the sophomore year. Stu- dents are not required to take chemistry andfor physics, but all college preparatory students are strongly urged to do so. Our science laboratory, though small, is well equipped. A big advantage comes to us from the fact that-our science classes are broken down into small numbers and it is possible to get individ- ual help and guidance in our sci- entific pursuits. The cumulating proiect of the science classes is the Science Fair. Each student prepares an exhibit for the fair. This year the exhibi- tion was held the first week in May. Barbara Vaetz fl.J and Candidate Marcella Herrera, O.S.F. test for over-tones during a physics experiment. Claudia Sitton lcenterj checks a shorthand brief form test. Cecilia Depew CIJ and Beverly Johnson Cr.J await the results. Commercial Since some of us students do not go to college, and others that do go to college find it necessary to earn part of Their tui- tion, an introductory commercial educa- tion is available to students desiring to sign up for the commercial classes. Classes in shorthand, typing, book- keeping, office practice and filing intro- duce the life in an office to us. The use of the ten key adding machine and the dictaphone helps us to be more prepared to accept secretarial positions. Many of our typing and shorthand stu- dents earn awards for speed and effi- ciency in both subjects. As part of the course of Typing ll, Darlene Hine is learning to master the use of the dictaphone. Dorothy Doescher stands by wondering how she will succeed when she .is called upon to use the machine. I .34 zu Bookkeeping has its problems. Mary Ellen Hadley uses the adding machine to find her missing dollar. Joyce Watson is Longudge ond Fine Arts Language arts and fine arts have a definite place in the S.M.V.A. cur- ricula. Four years of English is re- quired for graduation from the Acad- emy. Two years of a foreign lan- guage, preferably Latin, is also re- quired. Classes in French are offered on the program. S.M.V.A. art students during the past three years have earned many awards in the competitive entries they have made. This year the first place winner in the Northwest Labor Poster Contest was an Academy stu- dent. Barbara Hcrlel paints a scene while Darylcnc NlcLarly KH and Dorenc Lulicli take a peek. Mary Linda Wollin fseatedj previews film strips on The Tale of Two Cities in preparation for an Eng- lish IV class. Lorelei Millsap UQ observes her while Trena Thomas assists. Rursus Carol Dana flashes the vocabulary drill card. Roberta Barsotti Cforegroundl responds, Again. Janice Betzer and Patricia Day give undivided attention. Sociol Sciences Each student that graduates from S.M.V.A. has at least three units in Social Studies. World His- tory, United States History and American Problems are required for graduation. Classes are also offered in ancient and modern history so that any student inter- ested in majoring in the social sciences may do so. Term papers, panel discussions, debates and film strips are used as teaching devices in many of our classes but particularly so in the social sciences. Many new slides and films were added to the audio-visual aid library this year. Students of U. S. History fl. to r.D Diane McDevitt, Sharon Hinkle, Mary Cozart and Phyllis Schefers locate Kansas as they discuss the outcome of the slavery problem of that territory. Seniors ll. to rj Launa Roberts, Donna Cendana and Joan Stremich garner information in the library for their term papers in American Problems. Members of the World History class ll. to rj Teresa Smith, Julia Schroetke, Vicki Estill and Eileen Robinson present a panel on the Crusades. Honors Course This year the Honors Course was inaug- urated at the Academy. After four years, the students who have followed the course will have a well-rounded-but in- tensified 'preparation for college. Choice of students to follow the course is made by the faculty. Entrance exam- inations, grade school records, intelli- gence quotients, as well as references for personal integrity are carefully studied before permission is given to take the COUl'Se. The Honors Course was introduced to offer a challenge to the exceptionally gifted student. The four year program is listed below.
