When we crept in slowly, dublously, eyeing everyone and every tlung w1th suspicion? That day when we first trod the cold floor of the Freshman corr1dor? It was different and strange too Remember the k1nd, sympathetlc glances cast 1n our d1rect1on with Just a shade of superi ority 1n some of them? We were an lndependent, fun loving group, young, 1nexper1enced but eager and willing ry our best, and we d1d Remember? When Sister Adelbert taught those Hsquares' to us? Remember when something went amiss ' It must have been those lreshmen who did 1t?' But oh' The days dragged and the weeks crawled, and the months just wouldn't budge unt1l that day when we were finally boosted one floor, one grade higher and the f1rst year was over' Remember? when the corridors grew brighter and our mtellects keener? At last there were puplls below us, even though the distance was so very slight Finally, we were looked at with the respect we so longed for Remember? The partles and dances where the boys and glrls finally danced together? Where we showed our first signs of maturlty, and It was the boy who tugged at the door, wh11e the glrl pat1ently waited? Remember? Do you recall the lessons 1n Sister Tr1n1ta's Latin class and the division of something 1nto three parts whether lt was Caesar or Gaul IS anybody's guess' And we sauntered along with the year knowing that, given time it would pass, but would we? Yes, we passed Some with flying colors, others w1th dragging colors, but, we passed' And we also proved something to ourselves and to everyone else We proved that no other class had so much sp1r1t and pep as the up and comlng class of '57, Cand no other class ever w1ll'D be1ng up there with our pals, the Seniors We were 1mpuls1ve people of the world, adventurers, devil may carers for we had contacts ' Driven by our confidence and a bit of the brisk autumn days, we forged up ward and onward tak1ng each flight of stalrs 1n our stride But as winter came, that age old question arose, Why arent Freshmen put on the thlrd floor? Soon winter breezed out, and 1n 1tS wake came sprmg, an our Biology class w1th Sister Catherme Marie Remember? How we cut up w1th Herman, that lovely smell1ng frog? Our days were filled with many humorous happenings, which we tried to recapture, but couldn' For all too late we realized that next year was to be our last and with it would come adulthood, the f1nal step to success, the last door to be opened 1n this bu1ld1ng And then suddenly here we were, almost as Freshmen agam, alone agamst the world w1th no one to lean on, to depend on Leaders now, not followers Why did everyone look at us with such a strange gleam in eye? Why cou1dn't It be hke lt always had been w1th everythmg on an easy, everyone 1S equal basis? But a change had come' We all realized that Even our classroom doors brought us back to our Freshmen days for we were afrald to approach them, afrald of all the strange things we saw and the stranger tlungs we heard from the class of '56 Thelr classes were so different, so seemingly private and secluded So, as three years previously, we slowly dubiously crept into our new classrooms, our last classrooms at St Mary s through those much envied golden doors But the experlences we have gained the knowledge we now possess, have overruled our petty tremors We have acquired so much 1n so httle time, that even we are amazed We the class of '57 have had our share of trouble Remember? And much more than our share of fun We've stood together agalnst all ev11s which threatened to crash the wall of unity and friendliness wh1ch sur rounds us And ln our un1ty, we have become as one, worklng together w1th our faculty, priests, and parents to round out our personalitles, to develop our minds, that we may become the fully integrated persons, which, we beheve, we now are And so, as our high school career bustles to a close, we look back on those blg oak doors with the1r added wrmkles since first we came, and with a shght pat we close the flrst chapter of our lives W1l1 you remember????????? 36 11 . V . 57 PORTS W 2 ,L , 2 If locker doors could talk they would have many an interesting tale to tell. They witness our enthu- siasm and determination as we report for our first practice session. They see our eager faces, hear our thrilled voices, and feel our hopeful anxiety before each gameg and they watch the tension mount as the season progresses. When victory is ours, these doors are triumphantly slammed shut and the echo of our jubilant spirit fills the room. When we must accept defeat, the doors are closed slowly, quietly, and a sympathetic silence pervades the atmosphere. Our locker doors, indeed, know the true spirit of our school. May the memories they hold for us remain with us for a long time to come, and may we feel again and again the pride and joy of being a part of St. Mary's. 1 Jerry Behen Father Richard U.
