This, the first GILMARIAN, ,is launched on the Ways of the Jubilee Year of 1929 by the love, iire and idealism of youth. It is the hope 'of those who have contributed to it and of those who have been responsible for its spars and timbers that it may carry a cargo of happy memories for all who have had a part in its launch- ing and for tevery member of St. Mary of Redford Parish. It has been christened THE GILEMARIAN as a re- . minder that We should all be Ser- vants of Mary. ' X -ff. . '?Q?f-Qiiffa?-Z'?5,Tf ffl . . .vw A 9. , . Ti, S -lgg,mfy3w,g - X, -s A W sh. With profound joy we join with him in celebrating this happy Silver Jubilee. It has been our privilege to know and love Father Cook for ten years. And it is our hope that he may be permitted to guide the destinies of St. Mary of Redford for many years to come. We take this opportunity to con- gratulate him and to thank him for all he has done and to Wish for him all the earthly blessings and the Divine favors which his labors have so richly deserved. ' 4 fMfWEQPQNxwwxwwwxwOf The REVEREND JOHN GILMARY C0oK, LL.D. Pastor, St. Mary of Redford P 0470 Qui' Church With a true feeling of pride and satisfaction we may look upon our new Church which has been dedicated, in a special manner, to our Blessed Mother. We are proud of St. Mary's because it is considered one of the notable structures in the country and because it represents the realization of our Pastor's fondest hopes. The Church was designed by Dr. Ralph Adams Cram. The exterior is of silver-gray granite, the trimmings and interior pillars being of lime- stone, and these, combined with the windows and furnishings, give us beauty materialized in stone, glass and metal. It may be of interest to learn, or to recall, why the particular style of architecture was chosen. A careful study of the early history of St. Mary's discloses that some of the pioneer Priests and a majority of the first Catholic settlers in the territory embraced in this Parish came from France. So it was thought fitting that the style of the new St. Mary Church should be distinctly French and thus be a symbolic monument to them. With this thought in mind, Dr. Cram visited France and found the architectural inspiration for his design in the southern part of the country. He based it upon the shrinebuilt during the Romanesque age, notably that of the Church of Notre Dame du Port, at Clermont-Ferrand, and other famous Churches at Nevers and Avallon. The first impression gained on entering the Church is one of beautiful simplicity. The visitor's attention is in turn attracted to the graceful suc- cession of rounded columns, arches, windows, aisles, and side-Chapels, to center in admiration upon the Sanctuary. The main Altar, intricately de- signed of marble, supports the Tabernacle which is as beautiful as it is possible for human hands to make. Two angels are depicted on the inside doors, with the words inscribed below them: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. The outside doors bear the inscription: I am the Bread of Life. Six emblems stand out in relief, each one containing insignia of the Passion of Christ. They are as follows: The hammer and lance, the cross and nails, the ladder, sponge, and spear, the sacred Face, Pilate's court of justice over which are scattered the thirty pieces of silver, and the seam- less garment. Immediately back of the main Altar a beautiful statue of our Blessed Mother stands as guardian. This position is, indeed, a very appropriate one, for She seems to dominate the whole body of the Church. The lofty square campanile, or bell tower, which rises to the right of the sanctuary, is a feature typical of the Romanesque period. It is, as it Page Eight -s.--...,,.......,,...-....,.MM..-...1..., mv- ,, WA ,-........K...,,,.,....-.,,..,-.....-.5,.......- .,,.,...W,t..w.,,-.. ,...,,..4. .,. 71, 'fn if L ,. 44 4 ' .J1 ' yr- J: . On either side of the sanctuary one may see a small chapel, carrying out the beauty of the plan. One is dedicated to our Blessed Mother and the other to St. Joseph. The Windows throughout the entire Church are works of art. The four sanctuary Windows were chosen with much deliberation and thought, for each conveys an exempliiication of one of the principal sacrifices of the Old Law that prefigure the sacrifice of the Mass. Above each is a medallion of a prophet of the Old Law and below a memorial to the prophets of the New Law. The Windows in the body of the Church are tributes to lVIary, for each illumines one of the mysteries of the Queen of Queens. As we study these beautiful works of art, we appreciate more and more the symbolism of each and begin to realize the value of the Gift of Faith, our most priceless heritage, which this beauteous structure exemplifies. A short way back from the Church was an old, comfortable-looking farm house. This was the Rectory. And, situated in the middle of the Church property, was Rosary Hall, our first school. This was a two-story building, consisting of two rooms on each floor. The Sisters Went through many hardships to teach in that old school and traveled back and forth daily from St. Agnes' school. Rosary Hall school included eight grades and we still have many students in our high school who look back with pleasure on the years they spent there. From the class 'of '29 alone the old students number seven: Raymond Ankofski, Harry Tyler, Agnes Hope, Marie McDonough, Marion Law, Marie Magnee, and Eugenia Gramlich. Our much-lovcd Mother Genovefa taught these boys and girls, with the assistance of one other Sister. In 1923 the first part of our beautiful new building was completed and, for the first year, only one room was opened. Rosary Hall was also used that year, and the Sisters, then numbering four, lived in the present oflice of our school. The next year, 1924, the Convent was built, more Sisters came, and more classrooms of the school were opened to students. Mother Genovefa carried her students through the years with flying colors, until, in 1926, the orders came to change, and Mother Julia finished the year with the graduates. . In the fall of 1926, Mother Irmina, whom everyone has learned to love, came to direct and guide. In that year also the second wing of the school was added and our faculty now numbers thirteen Sisters and sir: lay teachers. In the fall of 1929, we shall have another wing, more rooms, and more of the loving and gentle Sisters to teach, guide, and direct in them. Thus has been added one more chapter to the long history of service and devotion which the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary have written into the record of their Order. This courageous Sisterhood, whose efforts for generations have done so much to further the cause of education and spread the Catholic faith, have always been at the call of any struggling Parish. Parents and the students and alumni of St. Mary's school join in this acknowledgment and appreciation of the work accomplished by the faithful Sisters who have brought our school to its present high standard. Page Fifteen fy Through the Silver Years With humility that ever accompanieth wisdom, with vigor and courage worthy of a disciple of Christ, with undaunted spirit and with an abiding faith in the eflicacy of prayer, the Reverend John Gilmary Cook, LL.D., ten years ago began the arduous work of building and organizing the Parish of St. Mary of Redford. Since that day, into the silvery mists of time, a decade of years has passed. Our beauteous basilica, consecrated to the Mother of God, our well- equipped school, dedicated to the training of youth, and a spiritual and material progress most worthy of note have sprung from his energy and devotion. Ten years of Father Cook's Priesthood have been ours. The first fifteen were spent in Reese and Mt. Clemens. There, as here, the parishes were made happy by his presence and made better by his ardent Priestly zeal. There is, there can be, no question as to the success of Father Cook's mission in St. Mary of Redford Parish. Dreams made actuality through strenuous work have taken form in the growth of the Church and the buildings that stand as monuments to his labors. What the future holds no man may know. We can but express the sincere hope that the years to come may find him, as now, our guide, directing us on Virtue's pathway. JoHN HALLMAN, '29 Page Sixteen 5 JOHN A. Motto, Auspice Maria Colors, Silver and Green Flower, Killlwney Rose In the autumn of '19 the River Grand, reflecting gold, red and orange from the myriad shades of its Redford foliage, received into its welcoming arms the scholastic ship GILMARIAN. The long voyage to the Graduation Port of '29 was sponsored by the Reverend John G. Cook and five Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The chartered crew, drawn from the neighboring country, consisted of Eugenia Gramlich, Marian Law, Harry Tyler, of Redford, Raymond Ankofski, of Horng Agnes Hope. of Monnierg Marie McDonough, of Grandmontg Marie Magnee, of District II. The young sailors determined to face all types of weather while a-sail, even though there should rise upon their horizon Arithmetical barriers and Geographical glaciers. Many happy hours were spent on the river before the ship entered the broad sea. Because of the inexperience of the sailors, the voyage was to be made along the seashore, rather than by a direct route straight across the blue expanse. Their first stop was at Port '20, where Jack Schneider, of Rosary, Mil- ton Kuhlman, of St. Theresa's, and John Hallman, of St. Anthony's, were waiting to join the sailor band of scholars. Dangerous waters were then experienced and THE GILMARIAN sought safety in the harbor of '21, where an expert seaman, John Flemming, from St. Bernard's, came aboard to help guide the ship to '22, where the crew found six eager recruits anxious to try their luck at sea. Mary and John McErlane, and Irene Prud'Homme, of St. Theresa's, Preston and Margaret Meisel, of St. Agnes'g and Ruth Perry, of Rosary, were initiated into the life of a scholar marine. Because of storm, the port of '23 was not reached. The crew, however, were not disappointed, for at the next stopping place, Isabelle Budzinski said that she heard that there were no GILMARIAN passages in '23, so she had hurried all the way from Visitation to be on time at the dock of '24, in order to board the ship. Great was the excitement when, nearing '25, the Pilot told the crew that a large group of people were awaiting the arrival of their ship. When the boat docked, Alice Cloutier, of Canada, Irene Cahill, of Annunciationg Page Thirty '...f...,...v.., ML... Once more the crew rejoiced, once more the aims, ambitions, and plans were explained and the new members donned their sailor suits so that they would be classed as real GILMARIANS. During the voyage a cable was received from Father Cook, in which he told about the beautiful new Church he was erecting and how anxious he was to see the structure complete. He promised that the sailors' graduation from the ship of scholastic learning would be celebrated before the splen- did throne that was being raised to the Living God and His Blessed Mother, Mary Immaculate. To cheer the sailors, he announced that he was sending from Port '26 a half-dozen new sailors to swell their number. His promise was fulfilled when the following boys and girls joined the GILMARIANJ Donald Green, of Rosary, Bernard and Rita McNab, St. Agnes, Alfred Quigley, Visitation, Bernadine Hunt, Redeemer, and Bernadine Ryan, Denver. Port '27 suddenly loomed upon the horizon. What speed the ship was making! At this harbor two accredited sailors, George Doherty, of Assump- tion, and Terrence Renaud, of St. Joseph's, were accepted into the crew for the two following years of the Gilmarian voyage. The last stop the ship made was the port of '28, Here, by special per- mission, three senior sailors were taken on board, Mary Ellen Quigley, of Redford, Edna Heinze, Northwestern, and Agnes Hitchings, St. Theresa's. Of this last voyage of the GILMARIAN and her crew, many loving mem- ories remain. The final Port, '29, was reached too soon for these lovers of the sea. Their trip had been a happy one, their journey successful, and now the time for parting arrived. Despite the welcome at Graduation Port the sailors were sad, because their life at sea was over. But the deeds, the love, the work accomplished during the voyage on the scholastic ship will live in memory to guide, bless and cheer the crew on their separate voyages, to the Port of Heaven. School Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! St. Mary's speaks for itself. One glance at the beautiful monuments erected to the honor and glory of the Mother of God is sufficient to convince even the most skeptical that the .past of St. Mary's has been successful and that the future is certain to see a like progress. The thrifty pioneers who founded the Parish would find a special delight in the present structures, which are the living realities of their happiest dreams. The opportunities of the past 25 years were found and made into silver success by our Pastor, but the work of the future is to be molded with gold. Thus we see the advance and the higher standards, cemented by time, as the decades pass. p - With the years there must come, of necessity, some kind of growth. Now that experienced by this Northwest section is an unparalleled increase in the internal development of the Parish. The school feels this expansion perhaps more than does the actual community. It was not prepared for the rapid growth, consequently it suffers from the development. Therefore, it is the hope of Reverend Father Cook to erect, during this ,ensuing year, another addition, the final wing of the school building. In this building will be high school classnooms and a gymnasium, equipped to meet every demand for the physical training of the boy and girl. This St. Mary's will unite to the moral and intellectual training which for many years has 'molded and guided the youth of the Parish. Football, as usual, was inaugurated on the first day of the school year. The coach, Mr. John Conway Cook, formerly of the U. of M. team, was to be the main bearing, so to speak, in the year's coaching staff, while Philip Schafer was chosen as assistant. The first session was staged on September 11. Thirty-five students con- stituted the group that took part in the regular practice tilts. Three teams were formed and until the end of the season there was intensive practice on the school grounds every day from three until six. The squad was put through heavy drills in preparation for the opening game of the season with the Holy Name Institute, a non-league game. St. Mary's trampled Holy Name, 32-0, and the second and third teams were allowed to play in this game. St. Mary's of Royal Oak, the first league opponent, followed. The second team started against the Royal Oak eleven, but at the end of the first quar- ter, was replaced by the first team. The game ended 19-12. It was our first league victory. VVe then traveled to Pontiac to play St. Frederick's, who were in first place, clinging close to the championship. The day was bad for footballg the field was covered with puddles of water six inches deep, the first quarter was staged in a downpour of rain. Both teams played conserva- tively, and at the end of the game found the score 0-0, with St. Mary's tied for first place in the Cadillac Division. St. Ambrose, also played away from home, was the next game. St. Mary's, fighting to keep her place as first, defeated St. Ambrose, 24-0. St. Anthony's fell, 12-0, after a hard battle, leaving St. Mary's tied for the championship with St. Frederick's. Our record was three victories and one tie. The result, a 7-7 tie, came as a surprise to De La Salle, for our team was considered too light to play them. Our last league game was played on November 23, when we met Holy Rosary team, which was holding the second place in the division. The game was strenuous. Neither team was able to pass its opponents' '20-yard line and the game ended in a scoreless tie. The alumni, confident of victory and boasting of a heavier and older tcam, were conquered, 13-6. They left the field admitting that the young- sters could play football. ,. On Thanksgiving Day the final game was played on the home field with an old rival, St. Theresa's. St. Mary's, having gone through the season undefeated, did not wish to feel the sting of defeat so late in the season. This stimulated action so that, though lighter than our opponents, we ,' efeafted them, 6-0. 'f-if -' 4' , s ,' V. Of the charter members, five are now alumni: Irene Cline, Helen McGuire, Dorothy Ney, Charles Reattoir and Paul Spellicy. Four are members of the class of 1929: John Hallman, George Doherty, Milton Kuhlman and Alice Cloutier. The following officers were chosen at the first meeting: Irene Cline, President: Helen McGuire. Secretary, and Milton Kuhlman, Treasurer. A constitution and by-laws were then drawn up and approved. During the first semester of the society four pledges, William Ryan, '28, Zelda Sheridan, '30, Eugene Freitas, '31, and Thyra Breslin, '31, were received as members at a formal initiation dinner, held in the school audi- torium, February 2, 1928. Before June, three more students, Bernadine Ryan '29, Ruth Perry '29, and Milford Boutin '29, had been pledged. The record showed a member- ship of sixteen, eleven of whom were classed as active members, since they would be at school the following year. With the re-opening of school came the renewal of the society. The Gilmary Pen Club opened its ranks to six new members: three seniors, Alfred Kurtz, Bernard McNab and Mary Ellen Quigley, two juniors, Helen Ward and George Wilkinson, and three sophomores, Louis Ruedisueli, Kenneth Mitchell and Mary Geraldine Butler. Ofiicers for the school year: John Hallman, President: Zelda Sheridan, Secretary, and George Doherty. Treasurer. GEORGE DOHERTY, '29 Page Sixty-four St., Mary Orchestra St. Mary of Redford School Orchestra is truly a representative organ- ization, and, by employing various instruments, may vary its program by solos from wind, brass, string or percussion groups. Perhaps you would like to tune in on one of the school programs. Listen to the opening number that sounds the keynote of the occasion. Notice the rhythmic bass and resonant melody of the pianists, Edna Heinze and Mary Hammell, leading the players through that spirited march. Men of Valor is aided by the vim of the drummer, Hubert Kessel, and enhanced by the cornet and clarinet solo in the first trio, played by Virginia Davis. Would you like to hear our St. Patrick program? The opening strand of Rustic from that beautiful collection of Irish melodies, Dear Old Ireland , is played by the entire orchestra. This is followed by that beau- tiful and much-beloved, Come Back to Erin , the first part a trumpet solo played by Charles Farrell. The minor part is taken by the violins, bells, and Xylophone. The saxophones are added for the final chorus. Who could resist listening to the violins swing into the Wearing of the Green ? The first parts are played by Agnes Hope, Marie McDonough, Evangeline Bar- rett, Edward Dolan, Ralph Smith and Irvine Nadolny, obligato parts by Marjorie Gleason and Josephine Davis. Believe Me If All Those Endear- ing Young Charms, is a beautiful duet of bells and Xylophone which is rendered by Loretta Gilloe and Eleanor Ankofski. The Last Rose of Summer , consists of a saxophone quartette, Jack Schneider, Gertrude Melvin, Georgiana Cressy, John Cressy, and the closing number, the spirited Minstrel Boy, is entered into by all, giving a titting climax to a beautiful and varied program. Page Sixty-five Achievement of lldleall The Spanish Adventurers proceeded on their way, passing by the Pueblo homes of the Southwest Indian tribes, following the course of the Rio Grande, through the Sangre De Cristo mountains, by the cliff dwellings of the Colorado's and finally into the great, open prairies, inhabited only by Indian tribes and roving herds of buffalo. Finally the leader grew despondent. Days and days have passed and we see nothing but prairie, he said. Let us return to the South. How could there be Seven Cities of Gold on nothing but level prairie? Had they looked into the future they might have seen the very land on which they had camped now turned into luxuriant fields of waving grain. Not Seven Cities of Gold, but a country of golden resources! They had failed ! They had ideals but failed to make their ideals become realities. We who are pioneers in the teaching of home-making do not intend to let our ideals fail of realization. The work is in an adventurous state. We, too, have ideals which we are trying to attain. It is our desire to make the work, in relationship with the pupil, a growing process, starting with the individual and working out to include the world with which he must asso- ciate. We believe this can best be brought about by causing the pupil to want to be a worthy member of his own home, to learn to judge and dis- criminate in order to manage his own affairs, to realize the effect which his high standards will have upon other people, and finally, to prepare him for later family responsibilities. In order to make the pupils worthy home members, and useful mem- bers of society, we must give them more than a technical knowledge of how to make a good white sauce or how to construct a French seam in a new dress. Mary and John should be given a knowledge of right standards of conduct and of how to solve ethical problems, both private and social., Mary must be interested in learning how to gain and keep friends. John must learn to carry the ideals of sportsmanship and fair-play, which he has learned on the football field, into the profession which he chooses. Standards of conduct, work, play, religious beliefs, and family- tradi- tions are still acquired in the home. The best.place to gain such education is in the home. However, the com- plexity of present-day living has placed much of the.home-making instruction and character-building in the schools. We hope that the course in home-making has helped the stu- dents to find,' themselves. And, that they will not, as the gay Span- ish adventurers, fail to attain their i ideals. REGINA MCDERMOT, B. S. Page Sixty-six Music ST. CECILIA CHOIR A BEGINNER ST. ALOYSIUS CHOIR U Page Sixty-seven Parish Organizations There is no better indication of the successful leadership of a Priest, no more convincing evidence of his ability and zeal, than the number and condition of the various societies and organizations of his Parish. As we stand at this Jubilee crossroad, let us make a survey of ours. Of these organized Parish bodies, the Holy Name Society is the oldest. It has grown from a small unit into a most powerful organization of the Parish, accomplishing much Wherever its far-reaching influence has touched. In the material line, the Society has not been less successful than in the spiritual. It has sponsored innumerable activities which the erection and support of our new Church and School have made necessary. The Society has indeed proved itself to be an indespensable factor of the Parish. Another pioneer organization is the Altar Society. Whenever the Parish has celebrated some important occasion this group of loyal women have oiered their willing services. We wonder just how it would be if there were not such an organization to come forward and carry out the details of a St. Patrick's Day banquet or a football victory! At the Christmas Sales and other affairs necessary to the support of the Parish, the whole-hearted zeal and untiring activity of this Society have been most apparent. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was formed shortly after Father Cook's arrival at St. Mary of Redford. The work of this unselfish body of men in alleviating the sufferings of the more unfortunate members of the Parish is deserving of the highest credit. A signal of distress immediately attracts their attention and their aid is sent. There are many who have had cause to thank these men for the charity of Christ which they manifest. The Young Ladies' Sodality has also given the Parish many reasons to place its stamp of approval upon their society. The latest project has been to sponsor a hope-chest drawing, to help pay for one of the stained glass windows in the Church which they have pledged to donate. Their interest in all the affairs of the Parish is active. The Ushers' Club is an organization with which the Parish could not well dispense. Considerable confusion would undoubtedly occur if these young men were not on hand to guide the crowds of parishioners who attend Mass at St. Mary's. The members pledge themselves to be on duty at a certain Mass each Sunday and, even though it proves a sacrifice for them, they keep their appointments. Dances and social affairs have been successful under their management and have filled a distinct need in the social life of the Parish. The Ushers seem to have the charm of being suc- cessful hosts for, from all reports, their club meetings are evenings of sat- isfactory entertainment. A more-recently organized society is one known as the Social Club, pledged to the financial aid of St. Mary's and to the promotion of sociabil- ity among the members.
