Our ialnon Seventy-five years have passed since the morning of July 27, 1885, when amid prayers of ioy and hymns of praise a cornerstone was laid, and the saintly Father Joseph Dabrowski witnessed the first materializati-on of the dream which he had made his life's work, a special school to prepare priests for the service of his people, a seminary - the Polish Seminary. The Bishops, priests, and faithful, who had gathered on the east side of Detroit that day, be- held with Father Dabrowski the begin-nings of what was to become the expression of God's Will in Providence's answer to the Church's need. Daily the bishops of America were becoming more burdened with their obligations to the vast and increasing numbers of Po-lish immigrants coming to these shores. An effective ministry to these 'new Polish Americans demanded a clergy well-equipped in their language, culture, and ancient Catholic customs and traditions. Such a clergy was seriously lacking, and as the need grew more imperative, it came to the attention and con-cern of the Holy Father himself. With a wisdom at once both inspired and paternal, Pope Leo XIII approved what he saw as an answer and a chal- lenge. A school must be built, a seminary wherein there could be trained the priests who alone could adequately minister to these niumberless souls, to their children, and to their children's children. And so it began. From the need of the hour rose this challenge, and from out of a dream was born o plan. Through the guided labors of Father Joseph Dabrowski there came i-nto being a Seminary, the instrumen-t which God saw fit to use as the singular means of safe-guarding and securing the Faith of those Polish Catholics who came to America with little more than their Faith. But to them it was a priceless possession. Preserved for centuries by their forebears in their fatherland, it must also be pe- served in a newly-ad-opted land. iadenx Today, after seventy-five years, that Seminary still stands, moved long ago from the distractions of the city to the peace of the lake coun-try, now expanded beyond dreams, serving still as is God's Will - Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Saint Mary's College, and Saint Mary's Preparatory - the Orchard Lake Schools. For three-quarters of a century now, these Schools have dedicated themselves to the service of God, America, and the American Polonia. The labors and struggles of countless hands, the aspirations and prayers of coun-tless hearts, the unrelentin-g sacrifices of countless lives - these have been blessed by God with a fruitfulness eloquent indeed in its witness of Divine Generosity and Ap-proval. From these Schools there have proceeded over two thousand priests, bishops, pastors, and prelates - men who have proved themselves heralds of the Word and channels of grace, serving today amid the eight million Ameri- can Catholics of Polish descent in this country, more than twenty percent of the present American Catholic population. From these Schools have proceeded some ten thousand Ca-tho-lic Iaymen, leaders and contributors in every field of public service and hu- manitarian endeavor. From these Schools there has arisen a Triune Tradition - a unique and admirable union of our Catholic Faith, our Polish Heritage, an-d our American Ideals. Mid iubilation and thanksgiving do Pontiff and President alike, Churchmen and Statesmen, pay glowing tribute to these seventy-five years of dedi- cated service. With humility and gratitude do we of the Orchard Lake Schools give honor to the numberless unselfish and sacrificing souls who made those years both fruitful and possible. It is to these seventy-five years and to these numtberless souls that this 1960 Jubilee Volume is dedicated. May it prove a lasting expression of that tribute and a fit token of that honor. . Right Reverend Monsignor Wallace J. Filipowicz Rector and President
