U s A a ' onqui tadora became famous throughout the land when Francisco e Varg edicated a chapel in grateful appreciation for the help sheig him in reconquering Santa Fe. Since then, she has been x bli venerated by a yearly procession through the city she had n ered. P oudly she reigns over the hearts of her people, dressed as befitting a panish queen. On her face may be seen the lines of the joys and sorrows of her people. That day, long ago, she conquered not only the city of Santa Fe, but also the hearts of every Catholic in New Mexico. Because La Conquistadora is the Queen of New Mexico and a symbol of our Catholic heritage in the West, we would like to name this book for her. True, Diego de Vargas conquered the Indians, but La Conquistadora conquered the hearts of all the faithful! Long ago She saw them come with banners waving, With helmets flashing in the sun. She saw them march with swords prepared for battle To claim the soil beneath their feet That was long ago. 9.3! 3 it And now-- ' 20' She smiles upon her children R Whose hearts are loyal and so true. Pope John XXIII in December declared Mother Seton venerable . . . this is the 150th anniversary of their founding in Emmitsburg and the 130th anniversary of the Cincinnati foundation. The Sisters of Charity have labored in New Mexico since 1865, in Albuquerque since 1882, and at St, Mary since its opening in 1893. Mother Seton is responsible for beginning the parochial school system in the United States and her daughters started the public school system in Albuquerque. The source of their power is revealed above and all who meet them know-- the Charity of Christ urges them.
