FOREWORD The Bells of St. Mary's, Ah! hear they are calling. . . Since time immemorial bells have been symbolic of the prelude to a new activity: the onset of a great victory, the advancing of a new era, the establishment of a different way of life, or even the foundation of Liberty. So too, at St. Mary's the bells have been emblematic of a beginning: the instigation of a new relationship, the introduction to a world of Knowledge, the advancement towards a more spiritual way of life. The church bells, which have daily beckoned us to Holy Mass and the sanctuary bells, which have inspired us to raise our minds and hearts to God, have instilled within us a deep and firm foundation of faith and love of our religion. The school bells, calling us to numberless activities and assemblies, have served to introduce us to a new concept and to strike up new acquaintances. Even the lowly fire bells, which we have all too often welcomed with grimaces, have taught their valuable lessons of promptness and obedience. And so it is that bells, which have constituted so vital a part in our lives, have become representative of the principles and philosophy that we have acquired within the corridors of St. Mary's. The sound of the bells has ever inspired in the hearts of the students a love for and loyalty to their Alma Mater. Thus the Class of '60 have selected as the theme for this, the initial presentation of the Crusader, an episode from their daily lives which will always remain with them, the ringing of the Bells of St. Mary's.
