LM, ' Our Mother, ,Our Queen 4. '1 FOREWORD The Bells of St. Mary's, Ah! hear they are calling. . . Since time immemorial bells have been symbolic of the prelude to a new activity: the onset of a great victory, the advancing of a new era, the establishment of a different way of life, or even the foundation of Liberty. So too, at St. Mary's the bells have been emblematic of a beginning: the instigation of a new relationship, the introduction to a world of Knowledge, the advancement towards a more spiritual way of life. The church bells, which have daily beckoned us to Holy Mass and the sanctuary bells, which have inspired us to raise our minds and hearts to God, have instilled within us a deep and firm foundation of faith and love of our religion. The school bells, calling us to numberless activities and assemblies, have served to introduce us to a new concept and to strike up new acquaintances. Even the lowly fire bells, which we have all too often welcomed with grimaces, have taught their valuable lessons of promptness and obedience. And so it is that bells, which have constituted so vital a part in our lives, have become representative of the principles and philosophy that we have acquired within the corridors of St. Mary's. The sound of the bells has ever inspired in the hearts of the students a love for and loyalty to their Alma Mater. Thus the Class of '60 have selected as the theme for this, the initial presentation of the Crusader, an episode from their daily lives which will always remain with them, the ringing of the Bells of St. Mary's. May his delightful Irish humor and good-will always abide with him and may he always remember us in his prayers, as we shall him. Father Haney glances up from his pastoral duties long enough to give a friendly smile to his children. Cur Wise Leaders. The best because, with the advent of Senior dignity, the life-long desire nd ambition of every school boy has been attained. Now, the Seniors are sitting n top of the student world, now, they are enioying the numerous privileges llotted only to their station. The worst, because they are now about to leave be- ind forever ioyous moments which can never be relived. Now, they will soon be tepping, for the last time, through familiar portals,'th'o'se doors which have en- ompassed and protected them for twelve formative years, now they will soon de- rt from the many friends and advisors who have watched thegmkgrow in wisdom nd maturity. ' A ' ' And so, to the Seniors, is granted the privilege of reminiscing for a brief oment, of recalling memories which will be forever theirs - occasions such as: ,V he frantic candy bar sale when they lost the race for the Spirit Trophy, their irst class dance, Moonlight Magic, the Junior-Senior Proms at Lovett Hall, the it ing Ceremony, which impressed upon them, for the fir t time, what it really 1 ant to be Seniors, the May Crowning, the last uni ied act of Homage to OL. 3 ther Mary, and finally, graduation, that day of all days. Throughout all of these activities and duringgtheir years at St. Mary's, the ' Q lass of '60 has ever tried hard to uphold the honor and principles of their A ells of hope, of love, and of ioy have rung for them an'd now, as they are f o embark upon their separate courses as functioning members of society, they Q ave embedded deep within them, a filial love and loyalty to Mary and to her chool. The bells of St. Mary's, which have played such a vital part in the lives of all her students To the freshmen who, in the Autumn of l959, entered high school as eager young. students, full f the spice of youth and tinted a faint shade of green around the edges, the sound of the ell, which they were now hearing for the first time, heralded the arrival of an entirely new signified all the ioys of young people embarking on an adult voyage and helped to dispel, omewhat at least, the fears and doubts which grip the heart of every Freshie. f For the sophomores, who have now become a little more schooled in the ways of student life, t. Mary's bells have become a reminder of faith, in God and their fellow-man, and of hope, that ope which will soon be carrying them into the strange, wonderful world of the upper-classmen. or the sophomores too, many ioyous bells have been ringing during this past year as they D radually became more interested in the activities of the school, took a more active part in the rives and campaigns, and finally climaxed their year with the Sophomore-Senior Breakfast. ln the lives of the iuniors, the bells, which have reverberated in their ears for so long, have ow burst into full force as spokesmen of their achievements. Activities such as the Junior ances, the special movies, basketball games, Homecoming floats and the Prom itself have left ith them many happy memories. At long last, the members of the Class of '61 have attained the tature of upper-classmen, and what a wonderful experience it is! X f l But alas, along with the new sense of accomplishment have come many additional responsibili- es and problems to face. Now they have passed the half-way mark in their high school career nd must soon prepare to meet the world and its challenge. I X X Yes, the days of the under-classmen are short, sweet and peppered with fun and memories. lt a world all its own, one which can be relived only in thought, retained only in heart. They are ays always to be treasured dearly, never to be skipped over lightly. And, in the world of the reshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors, the Bells of St. Mary's will always their own ial eaning. Junior and Senior Dances, Career Day, Homecoming festivities, e election of a King and Queen of Hearts, the Junior-Senior Prom - all f these are a part of the school life. They exemplify what is known as school spirit , but better still, participation in these activities fuses e student body into a close-knit network of friends and vanquishes the suol barriers existing between classes. Whether on the dance floor at St. Mary's Gym or at Lovett Hall, whethe lnging around a campfire or voting for a Queen, the students of St. ry's always employ teamwork and have a wonderful time doing it. Since these activities bring students together on a more informal, cial basis than that which normally exists in the classroom, they tend add still another facet to the individual's character, round him out as a cial being, inspire a sense of understanding, congeniality and loyalty ng the entire student body and, in so doing, prepare the way for tter citizens of tomorrow. Whether for better or for worse, whether ioyous or sad, the fun-loving, fast-moving pace of letic season has become near and dear to every student of St. Mary's. Sports have become mmon ground where freshman and senior can stand together and root for the school team. Actually, bells have no part in an athletic contest, but to our ears, attuned to the Bells of Mary's even the whistles have melodious sounds. For the whistles which announced the end the quarter, the half, or the game, always emphasized for us the stamina, courage, co-operation, alty, and sportsmen ship displayed by our athletes. Mf.
